If it were not for the thoughtfulness of the author who has kindly translated the dialogue of two of the characters into English, the audience would be as confused as the actors, who play a Finn, an Italian and an Englishman - none of whom speak a word of the other's languages.1 women, 2 men
Ethnic Segregation Between Schools

Ethnic Segregation Between Schools

There is an enduring belief amongst some that segregation is worsening and undermining social cohesion, and that this is especially visible in the growing divides between the schools in which our children are educated. This book uses up-to-date evidence to interrogate some of the controversial claims made by the 2016 Casey Review, providing an analysis of contemporary patterns of ethnic, residential and social segregation, and looking at the ways that these changing geographies interact with each other.

A unique approach to describing life at sea in the Royal Navy. Despite the introduction of modern-day technology, Ships and Submarines of the Royal Navy still operate on the basis of main broadcast announcements, known in the Royal Navy as Pipes. Before the introduction of main broadcasts, a Crew (or Ship’s Company) would be alerted to forthcoming ship’s activity either using a Bosun’s Call (which is a small pipe or whistle) or a Bugle. Whilst those methods are still in place, and still used, a Pipe is now the term for any verbal announcement made over a ship’s main broadcast in the Royal Navy. This book aims to translate their meanings, not simply to make the seemingly incomprehensible understandable, but also to conjure up often humorous anecdotes that provide an insight into life at sea in the RN. Each Pipe is provided with a brief description of its meaning followed by longer observation of what it meant to different members of the Ship’s Company.

Neighbourhoods matter now more than ever before. They sustain fewer social connections, but in an era of great social inequality and high levels of immigration, they have become vital as places for homeowner investment and educational opportunity for children. The Rise of the Neighbourhood in Canada, 1880s–2020s traces the changing character and significance of Canadian urban neighbourhoods, city and suburban, since the 1880s. The book highlights patterns in neighbourhood life, particularly noticeable in larger urban areas, which are especially important for the least mobile people: workers, lower income households, immigrants, women, children, and the elderly. It explores how the physical and social characteristics of neighbourhoods affect public health, crime rates, social capital, and job opportunities while shaping the lifelong prospects of children. Analysing long-term trends, the book examines the importance of communications technology in the context of rising inequality and immigration. It shows how, as homeownership rose, neighbourhoods became vital settings for investment, increasingly financialized, reducing affordability. Using examples from all types of neighbourhoods in cities small and large, from St. John’s through Montreal and Winnipeg to Victoria, The Rise of the Neighbourhood in Canada argues that the current prominence of neighbourhoods will persist.

Diving Doctor on the Thai Cave Rescue (now a Netflix series) and former joint Australian of the Year explores the stories of other people who regularly risk their lives and what we can learn from their expertise. ‘Harry’ Harris – Thai Cave Rescuer, joint Australian of the Year – does something for fun that for the rest of us would trigger about four phobias. In near darkness and tight spaces, underwater and deep underground, he crawls through unexplored caves in what’s often described as the most dangerous sport in the world. To us, that’s a nightmare. To him, it’s recreation. He’s highly experienced, has done his research, controlled for all conceivable risks, and he’s completely focused. Flooded underground caves are his safe space. And the discipline involved – even the danger – leaves him better prepared to manage the day-to-day stresses of life in the twenty-first century. Is he the only one who feels that way? Come on the ultimate armchair adventure with Harris while he talks with other ‘risk-takers’ about why they do what they do, how they prepare, and how they’ve handled things going wrong. Harry talks with people like climber Alex Honnold (of ‘Free Solo’), sailor Jessica Watson, mountaineer James Scott, and film director, and deep-sea diver James Cameron, amongst many less familiar world-beaters, each of whom has a fascinating story. We meet base jumpers, drag-racers, snipers, surfers, and people adventuring from the highest of skies to the deepest of oceans. Harry’s conversations give us insights into what motivates these people and why a life without risk is no life at all. He believes that by doing ‘the hard things’ in life you can push yourself a little further and become stronger, more courageous, and more resilient.COMPELLING IDEA: why do deep-sea divers, free climbers, and big-wave surfers take the risks that they do? How do soldiers and firefighters manage risk? What can we learn from how they prepare and what they experience, what can we take into our own lives? The Art of Risk has important life lessons as well as gripping stories: Harris shows that in doing ‘the hard thing’, we become more resilient and courageous. Angela Duckworth’s Grit meets Alex Honnold film ‘Free Solo’THE ULTIMATE ARMCHAIR ADVENTURE: as well as having a fascinating argument, The Art of Risk tells ripping yarn after ripping yarn, guaranteed to get your heart pounding.EXPERT AUTHOR: Dr. Harry Harris was at the heart of the Thai Caves rescue, anesthetizing all the boys in order to get them out. Because Harry understands and can prepare for the risks, for him it’s a pleasurable – even meditative - experience. And, as he says, he feels ‘carefully managed risk-taking gives me the courage to manage the day-to-day stresses of life in the 21st century’.REMARKABLE INTERVIEWEES: Harry talks with people like climber Alex Honnold, sailor Jessica Watson, mountaineer James Scott, film director, and deep-sea diver James Cameron, amongst many less familiar names, each of whom has a fascinating story. Stepping Out is a warm and very funny play about the lives laughs and loves of a group of women (and one man) attending a weekly tap-dance class in a dingy North London church hall. There is ex-professional dancer Mavis who runs the class; cheerfully overweight Sylvia; Andy a plain do-gooder with no confidence; snobby but well meaning Vera; timid Dorothy who works in Social Security; Maxine attractive sharp and very shrewd; fat plain Lynne; Rose the self-styled "token spade" and Geffrey the lone male. As the play progresses the class's dancing improves to such an extent that by the climax a grand charity show performance they have been transformed into triumphant tappers worthy of any chorus line.

How Cities Matter

How Cities Matter

Most historians and social scientists treat cities as mere settings. In fact, urban places shape our experience. There, daily life has a faster, artificial rhythm and, for good and ill, people and agencies affect each other through externalities (uncompensated effects) whose impact is inherently geographical. In economic terms, urban concentration enables efficiency and promotes innovation while raising the costs of land, housing, and labour. Socially, it can alienate or provide anonymity, while fostering new forms of community. It creates congestion and pollution, posing challenges for governance. Some effects extend beyond urban borders, creating cultural change. The character of cities varies by country and world region, but it has generic qualities, a claim best tested by comparing places that are most different. These qualities intertwine, creating built environments that endure. To fully comprehend such path dependency, we need to develop a synthetic vision that is historically and geographically informed.
