An account of the life and work of a once-famous self-taught American artist of the 1940s, and a study of how artists go missing from public memory. A garment worker and slipper manufacturer with no training in art, Morris Hirshfield was never expected to make history. Against all odds, his wildly stylized paintings of female figures, often nude, animals, and landscapes became internationally known in the 1940s. Admired by Pablo Picasso, Piet Mondrian, and the French surrealists, his peak moment of visibility occurred in 1943, when the Museum of Modern Art mounted a one-man show of his work. The exhibition was widely reviewed--though mostly reviled--by the press, who jeeringly crowned Hirshfield "Master of the Two Left Feet" for his tendency to display the female body in that unorthodox fashion. After the artist's death in 1946, his work was largely forgotten, but in Master of the Two Left Feet, art historian Richard Meyer rediscovers Hirshfield for twenty-first-century audiences, offering full-color reproductions that capture the vibrant imagination and sheer visual pleasure of Hirshfield's paintings. The book also features a catalog of works compiled by curator Susan Davidson which provides the most comprehensive documentation of the artist's work ever assembled. Ten years in the making, Master of the Two Left Feet presents Hirshfield's unlikely career as a painter not only as a missing episode in the history of twentieth-century art but as a case study of the ways in which artists go missing from historical knowledge and public memory. By looking closely at Hirshfield and his milieu in 1940s Brooklyn, Meyer demonstrates how much we have yet to learn, and to see, of the visual past. The book accompanies the exhibition "Morris Hirshfield Rediscovered," at the American Folk Art Museum, New York City, September 22, 2022-January 27, 2023.

"I know it when I see it..." These words, famously spoken in 1964 by United States Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart, became the rallying cry of the anti-obscenity lobby as their enraged howls became the soundtrack to a tumultuous mixture of modern art, homosexuality, and public funding.Author Richard Meyer charts the history of this American culture war through detailed analysis of the work of artists who fought on the front lines, often finding themselves personally vilified... and their artwork suppressed, denounced, and censored.Meyer tells the heroic story of the artists who, rather than acquiesce to their critics, doubled down in their response and created an "Outlaw Representation" of homosexuality. Liberated by their new outlaw status, the homosexual art community was suddenly free to create some of the most socially important work of their generation.Outlaw Representation is filled with brilliant artwork from some of the most celebrated artists of the 20th Century, including... Andy Warhol Robert Mapplethorpe Paul Cadmus Gran Fury David Wojnarowicz Holly Hughes ... and many more

Reading and Teaching raises questions and provides a context for preservice and practicing teachers to understand and to reflect on the complex issues surrounding the teaching of reading in the schools. It presents real teachers in their classrooms, dialogues about that teaching, and exercises for further clarification. The purpose is to help teachers make informed choices about their teaching of reading. The text considers the different types of decisions teachers might make in the teaching of reading and the knowledge upon which they rely in making those decisions—not simply factual information about using certain materials and methods to teach reading, but also knowledge about the mind, the political climate, the broader social and cultural circumstances of their students and schools and the communities in which they teach.Reading and Teaching is designed to engage teachers in beginning to evolve their own practical theories, to help them explore and perhaps modify some basic beliefs and assumptions, and to become acquainted with other points of view. Readers are encouraged to interact with the text and to develop their own perspective on the teaching of reading. This is the fifth volume in Reflective Teaching and the Social Conditions of Schooling: A Series for Prospective and Practicing Teachers, edited by Daniel P. Liston and Kenneth M. Zeichner. It follows the same format as previous volumes in the series.*Part I includes four real-life cases of teachers’ experiences in the classroom: “Teaching Reading Via Direct Systematic Instruction”; “A New Teacher Learns About Teaching Reading and Culture”; “A Teacher-Constructed Whole Language Program”; and “Critical Literacy in an Urban Middle School.” Each case is followed by space for readers to write their own reactions and reflections, educators’ dialogue about the case, space for readers’ reactions to the educators’ dialogue, and a summary and additional questions. *Part II presents three public arguments representing different views about the teaching of reading: direct instruction, whole language, and critical literacy.*Part III offers the authors’ own interpretations of the issues raised throughout the text and some suggestions for further reflection. A list of resources is provided. This text is pertinent for all prospective and practicing teachers at any stage in their teaching careers. It can be used in any undergraduate or graduate course that addresses the teaching of reading.

Wang Renmei was on a fast track to become one of China's leading film stars in the 1930s. Her early films were received with magnificent praise by audiences and critics alike, though she later lamented that she became famous too early and never had a chance to properly study acting. The film Song of the Fishermen in which she sang and played a major role was the first Chinese motion picture to win an International Award in Moscow in 1935. Wang's personal struggles reflected the turbulent period from the end of the Qing dynasty to the rise of Deng Xiaoping. This study explores her artistic achievements amid the prevalent anti-feminist and feudal society in China prior to the founding of the People's Republic in 1949-attitudes which contributed to the downturn of Wang's promising career and forced her to accept various bit parts among the more than twenty films in which she appeared. In addition, personal problems as well as the Anti-Rightist Movement and the Cultural Revolution led to her hospitalization for mental illness. Wang's life is emblematic of the experiences of many left-wing and Communist Party members from the Shanghai film community who were viewed with suspicion and enmity by the Yan'an clique headed by Mao and later the Gang of Four. Wang's performances in World War II for the Nationalist troops as well as her work with the US forces in China had a dire effect on her career after 1949. Yet today, her films are being discovered again. About the DVDWild Rose???[Ye Meigui] 1932Xiao Feng or "Little Wind," played by Wang Renmei, is a young girl who has lost her parents. Jiang Bo, played by Jin Yan, is a wealthy painter who discovers Xiao Feng in a small fishing village and makes her his model. When Xiao Feng is left homeless after a fire destroys her home, Jiang takes her to Shanghai to live with his parents, but Xiao Feng is later expelled from the mansion by Jiang's father because she cannot act the part of a sophisticated Shanghainese.

Art Works, Parts 1 and 2 address how art, theater, performance, film, and visual culture have reshaped the established terms of gender and sexuality and contributed to fashioning a queer world. Bringing together work from both the visual and the performing arts, each collection showcases cutting-edge research on a wide range of queer artists, media, and sexual subcultures. The contributors to these issues-scholars in art history, visual culture, theater and performance studies, and film and media studies-approach art not as a reflection of history but as a creative response to it, a response that imagines alternative forms of social, sexual, and creative life. Arguing for the primacy of the arts in queer life, the contributors show how art and performance can constitute a form of critical theorizing rather than simply an illustration of it. In different ways, each author demonstrates how art works to invigorate queer critique. The first issue includes a special dossier on AIDS activist film and video, marking the twenty-fifth year of the AIDS pandemic, and essays on late-nineteenth-century male nudes, lesbian surrealism, homoerotic photography in the Deep South, and the transnational, transgender contexts of the Pulitzer Prize–winning play I Am My Own Wife. Essays in the second issue focus on a series of queer case studies, including gay power graphics and psychedelia, female duets on the Broadway stage, Keith Haring and racial politics, British Vogue in the 1920s, and lesbian-feminist magazines of the 1970s. The issue concludes with a dossier of three shorter pieces on queer art and performance: an interview with the Chicano drag street performer Robert Legoretta (“Cyclona”), an essay on blogs and the Five Lesbian Brothers, and a discussion of a rarely exhibited work about cruising and public space by the contemporary artist Glenn Ligon.Contributors. Cemeteries house the dead, but grave-markers are fashioned by the living, who record on them not only their pleasures, sorrows, and hopes for an afterlife, but also more than they realize of their history, ethnicity, and culture. Richard Meyer has gathered twelve original essays examining burial grounds through the centuries and across the land to give a broad understanding of the history and cultural values of communities, regions, and American society at large.
