In Defence of the Realm

In Defence of the Realm

Richard Ormrod

The Conrad Press

'In Defence of the Realm: The Poetry of World Wars I & II; A Critical Study', is the first book to examine both wars' poetry in one volume, to the advantage of both. Set against their literary and historical backgrounds many lesser-known but excellent poets are critically assessed next to the 'known greats' (e.g. Owen & Sassoon, Douglas &Keyes) to show the range and quality of writing across the services and eras. Comprehensive, challenging and well-researched, this is a book for lovers of history, poetry and the esoteric; and for students from A-level to post-graduate level.

Andrew Young was one of the most original, inventive and paradoxical poets of the twentieth-century. C.S. Lewis called him, 'A modern Marvell and a modern marvel', and Philip Larkin remarked that, 'His works are in no danger of being forgotten'. Regarded as 'a major poet' by academic scholars, Young's prestige in this critical biography is taken one step further and declared a 'great' poet. Dr Richard Ormrod criticises and analyses Andrew Young's poetry to establish this greatness, especially in his lengthy masterpiece, Out of the World and Back. It also explores his fascinating life and personality: a wry, whimsical, erudite, complex man; a theist and a pantheist; an ironist and wordsmith; and a fervent naturalist, less at ease with people. Anyone interested in, or studying twentieth-century poetry at any level, will find this book invaluable and its claims challenging. Lovers of plants, birds and animals will be stunned by Young's deeply observant, unsentimental nature poetry, and by the two witty and engaging prose 'flower' books, A Prospect of Flowers and A Retrospect of Flowers - both hardy perennials.
Elvis Costello and Thatcherism

Elvis Costello and Thatcherism

David Pilgrim; Richard Ormrod

The emergence of Thatcherism around 1980, which ushered in a period of neo-liberalism in British politics that still resonates today, led musicians, like other artists, to respond to their context of production. This book uses the early work of one of these musicians, Elvis Costello, to explore the relationship between popular music and politics in one historical period. It is not a biography but an exploration of the interaction between a creative musician's works and their context of constraint and opportunity. Pilgrim and Ormrod unpack the political meaning of Thatcherism and deal with matters arising in that political context about Costello's life but which had resonance for many others at the time (and still do). These topics include the politics of race, class, gender and ageing, emphasising the recurring theme of nostalgia in modern and post-modern life. Throughout the book examples are provided of Costello's songs and how they work musically to illustrate or stimulate the contextual discussion. The book will be of significant interest to musicologists, sociologists and social psychologists.
