Illuminating one of the most pervasive issues of our time, Popular Culture is the first book to link the importance and implications of popular culture with pedagogical practice. It shows how cultural forms such as Hollywood films, pop music, soap operas, and televangelism are organized by gender, age, class, race, and ethnicity, thus providing the contradictory text that both enables and disables emancipatory interest, so fundamental to the formation of self and society. What emerges is a redefinition of the very notion of popular culture.

Veteran actor Syd Price’s life is shattered when he discovers he’s about to be unceremoniously written out of the TV soap where he’s been a regular since the 1970s. But rather than retire, he has an idea to develop a new TV series. He is unexpectedly befriended by ambitious ex-model and internet sensation, Chloe Anderson, who starred with him in the soap, and now offers to help with his new proposal. Some fifty years his junior, Syd is flattered, at least until he comes to suspect that her true aim is to steal his idea. His thoughts turn to scheming how to get his own back on her. At the same time, an ex-actor friend of Syd’s is struggling to cope with life out of the spotlight – and with losing contact with his own daughter. Syd vows to help with both. What Syd doesn’t envisage is that helping his friend while derailing Chloe will become entangled, leading to changes of plan and impossible choices. A heart-warming story of ageing, friendship, loyalty and retribution. The story develops against an evocative background of musical references that play in Syd's head and act as portents to what is about to happen

*New enhanced edition of the best-selling guide to sea creatures: The World Beneath!* Meet the world’s most fascinating sea creatures, see the lives and curiosities of colorful fish and coral reefs. This spectacular volume has more than 300 color photos and extraordinary text from a leading marine biologist and underwater photographer who is the international expert on seahorses. In this richly informative volume, brimming with new discoveries and more than three hundred colorful images of jaw-dropping fish and coral reefs, you’ll swim in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans; you’ll be dazzled in the Coral Triangle and amazed in Triton Bay. Up close you’ll meet the Cenderawasih fairy wrasse, with its fluorescent yellow streak; the polka-dot longnose filefish; and the multicolored seadragon. There are scarlet-colored corals, baby-blue sponges, daffodil crinoids, and all sorts of mystifying creatures that change color at the drop of a hat. The whale shark is almost larger than life and the author’s beloved pygmy seahorse, unless photographed, is almost too tiny to see. The wondrous creatures inside are charmers and tricksters and excel in the arts of seduction and deception, and you’ll have the rare chance to see and delight in their antics. You’ll also learn what they eat, how they play, and how they care for one another, live on one another, and mimic others when they’re afraid. There is also compelling insight into the naming process, which sea creatures are facing extinction, and how we can help them before it's too late. This new and expanded edition of The World Beneath has new text from award-winning author Dr. Richard Smith that covers recent developments and discoveries affecting the rapidly changing landscape of the world’s coral reefs, a wealth of new images from recent dives around the world, and a thorough index.

Since Test cricket began in 1877, there have been over three thousand players representing their countries in Test matches. World XIs tackles the daunting task of choosing the best of the best and coming up with the greatest team from each era (broadly decades) of Test cricket history and exploring these players in more detail. While the statistics for each decade are closely examined, some of the selection decisions are lineball and some greats of the game have missed selection in their respective XI. Who is the better fast bowler in the 1950s - England's Brian Statham or Australia's Ray Lindwall? Do you go for Abdul Qadir from Pakistan as a spinner, or does India's Kapil Dev's all-round ability secure him a 1980s spot? Is Rahul Dravid good enough to make the 2000s side? A second XI has been included for each era to show which legendary players missed selection and to help in the debate as to whether World XIs has got it right. With legends of the game such as W.G Grace in the 1800s; through to Don Bradman in the 1930s; the West Indies' three Ws in the 1950s; Imran Khan in the 1980s; and more recent greats such as Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara, there are a wide variety of players represented through the ages. And to cap things off, there are a number of greatest-ever teams for you to mull over. World XIs is sure to cause some robust debate amongst cricket lovers the world over.

Loved by wildlife, threatened by developers. A heart-warming story of a reluctant and unlikely friendship between a pair of misfits, whose futures become linked to the survival of an urban ‘greenspace’. Two young people are struggling to find themselves and a role in life. For one, the world is changing too quickly. For the other, change can’t come soon enough. Linking them are overgrown railway sidings - home to wildlife but about to be destroyed. Jill Standing is mocked because of her name, ignored because of the way she looks and thought wacky because of her views on the environment. Harry Pratt is mired in traditions foisted on him by his father. His interests are vintage jukeboxes, creating Christmas cracker jokes and his boss, Sarah. He has no interest whatsoever in the environment. They’re indifferent to one another, yet both want to preserve the sidings, but for different reasons. Campaigning against a big business, a shared love of Blondie and a reclusive, retired school-teacher transforms their lives. Set in 1989, and with a backdrop of music, environmental concerns and nostalgia, it follows frustrating wrong turns to a surprising, heart-warming conclusion.

This book is a must read for anyone concerned with climate change and lack of Government action addressing this rapidly unfolding crisis. The authors, tell their story of introducing the new technology of observing Earth from Space into the WA Government, following the first images of Earth being sent back by man from space some 50 years ago. Earth Observing Satellites (EOS) soon followed giving a new and unique view of the Earth revealing the massive human impacts driving climate change, species extinction and human conflicts. For the first time in history key WA Government agencies had unparalleled access to the means of measuring and sustainably managing WA's natural assets across the whole continent and surrounding oceans. Many new and innovative applications of EOS were developed. However these applications encountered the fundamental conflict between Ecology and Economics, which caused a drastic cutback when WA's Land Information Authority found that in pursuit of its commercial goals, sustainability was unsustainable. A fatal paradox that the authors argue, urgently needs to be addressed if climate catastrophe for future generations is to be avoided.
