Animals, economy and status: Integrating zooarchaeological and historical data in the study of Dudley castle, West Midlands (c.1100-1750)
This volume charts the changing human-animal relationship at one particular location, Dudley Castle, West Midlands, over several centuries. The temporal span considered (the 11th-18th centuries) is, arguably, one of the most formative in the evolving relationship between humans and animals. The period was one of profound economic, social and demographic change, witnessing not only the evolution of modern breeds of domestic animals, but also a change in the way animals were perceived and treated. In this study, the animal bones recovered from archaeological excavations at Dudley Castle have been integrated with historical documentation to provide a basis from which to explore these issues. Site-specific questions, as well as broader trends within the social and economic landscape of the medieval and post-medieval periods in England are considered. This study also attempts to explore dietary patterns on site, and the way in which the acquisition and consumption of food was used in the negotiation of social relationships.
Netherlands Antilles Civil Code

Netherlands Antilles Civil Code

Kluwer Law International

sidottu
This work is an English translation, featured opposite the original Dutch text, of the new law on companies and other legal persons contained in Book 2 of the Netherlands Antilles Civil Code, which entered in force on 1 March 2004. It includes a translation of the transitional regulations enacted following the introduction of the new legislation. The translation made by H.C.S. Warendorf, member of the Amsterdam Bar, and R.L. Thomas, solicitor in London, is published in Kluwer Law International's Series of Legislation in Translation. For non-Dutch speaking residents of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba, practitioners advising on Netherlands Antilles law as well persons or firms interested in the regulation of company and corporate law, this work will be essential. H.C.S. Warendorf and R. L. Thomas, experienced legal translators, made similar translations of Dutch corporate and commercial law in the loose leaf series Companies and Other Legal Persons under Netherlands and Netherlands Antilles Law and Netherlands Business Legislation, published by Kluwer Law International.

Mirror symmetry is a phenomenon arising in string theory in which two very different manifolds give rise to equivalent physics. Such a correspondence has significant mathematical consequences, the most familiar of which involves the enumeration of holomorphic curves inside complex manifolds by solving differential equations obtained from a ""mirror"" geometry. The inclusion of D-brane states in the equivalence has led to further conjectures involving calibrated submanifolds of the mirror pairs and new (conjectural) invariants of complex manifolds: the Gopakumar Vafa invariants. This book aims to give a single, cohesive treatment of mirror symmetry from both the mathematical and physical viewpoint. Parts 1 and 2 develop the necessary mathematical and physical background ``from scratch,'' and are intended for readers trying to learn across disciplines. The treatment is focussed, developing only the material most necessary for the task. In Parts 3 and 4 the physical and mathematical proofs of mirror symmetry are given. From the physics side, this means demonstrating that two different physical theories give isomorphic physics. Each physical theory can be described geometrically, and thus mirror symmetry gives rise to a ""pairing"" of geometries. The proof involves applying $R\leftrightarrow 1/R$ circle duality to the phases of the fields in the gauged linear sigma model. The mathematics proof develops Gromov-Witten theory in the algebraic setting, beginning with the moduli spaces of curves and maps, and uses localization techniques to show that certain hypergeometric functions encode the Gromov-Witten invariants in genus zero, as is predicted by mirror symmetry. Part 5 is devoted to advanced topics in mirror symmetry, including the role of D-branes in the context of mirror symmetry, and some of their applications in physics and mathematics: topological strings and large $N$ Chern-Simons theory; geometric engineering; mirror symmetry at higher genus; Gopakumar-Vafa invariants; and Kontsevich's formulation of the mirror phenomenon as an equivalence of categories. This book grew out of an intense, month-long course on mirror symmetry at Pine Manor College, sponsored by the Clay Mathematics Institute. The lecturers have tried to summarize this course in a coherent, unified text.

This work consists of an English translation, alongside the Dutch text, of the new law of property, rights and interests and the law of obligations (Book 3), the law of real rights (Book 5), the general part of the law of obligations (Book 6) and the law of special contracts (Book 7) of the Netherlands Antilles Civil Code, which entered into force in the Netherlands Antilles on 1 January 2001 and in Aruba on 1 January 2002. It also contains the transitional law enacted on introduction of this new legislation. It is published in Kluwer Law International's "Series of Legislation in Translation". For the non-Dutch speaking residents of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba, practitioners advising on Netherlands Antilles law and persons or companies interested in the regulation of civil law this work should be useful.
