A stylish exploration of one of the greatest cities for Modernist architecture in the world. Modernism, characterized by geometric shapes and flat roofs, is one of the defining architectural styles of the 20th century throughout the world. And nowhere is it more in abundance than in Faro, capital of Portugal’s Algarve region. There are over 500 Modernist buildings in Faro, the highest concentration of these types of buildings in Southern Europe. The city now has a specific Modernist buildings area, through which guided tours show the full range of detached and semi-detached grand houses, large-scale apartment blocks and little roads of terraced houses that are in fact cleverly disguised maisonettes. The architectural ringleader was Manuel Gomes da Costa, an Algarvian by birth, who had gone to South America in search of work but who came back in the 1950s to transform the city. Inspired by the work of earlier architects including Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer, Costa and his colleagues set about creating a Modernist paradise in the southern sun. This book will give fans of inspirational architecture the first real opportunity to delve deep into Southern Europe’s ‘Palm Springs’. Richard Walker, renowned photographer and artist, has been visiting the city for over 20 years and has amassed an astonishing record of the Modernist buildings in Faro. He hosts architectural tours, including one for the 20th Century Society. This is his first architectural book and includes many unseen photographs of the buildings that have gradually been restored and brought back to life over recent years.
What if everything you know about Jack the Ripper is wrong? Since 1888, hundreds of suspects have been proposed for the Jack the Ripper murders – from Polish barbers to Freemason conspiracies. But what if investigators have been asking the wrong question? Instead of asking ‘Who was Jack the Ripper?’, Richard Walker asked ‘How were these murders actually committed?’ What he discovered is truly shocking.
In a Cairo clinic, Ronny recovers from gender-affirming surgery. Her grandmother, mother and then Ronny herself sift through their pasts in search of what has led to this radical self-transformation. From decades of Home Counties respectability emerge buried family secrets – of hidden love, thwarted hopes and desires, stifled by conformity and the bonds of duty from which Ronny has broken free. First published in 1989, A Curious Child is innovative for being written from the perspective of a transgender person and her family. Amaurea Press is very happy to be bringing this back into print.

As a boy, Richard went to live in Ghana where he danced with his parents and their friends to Highlife music, the foundation of Afrobeat. This experience set the tone and tenor for the rest of his life. A life in which music, poetry, literature, theatre, art, travel, nature and love entwine. Performing at the Edinburgh Festival, he met Lauren, who became his soulmate. His story weaves their enduring romance through a life that brought them adventures in many parts of the world: Thailand, Nigeria, India, Brazil, Cyprus, Greece. On the Peloponnese coast by a turtle beach, they create the perfect place to live out the rest of their lives together. But their dream is prematurely cut short. Both irreverent and moving, this is a story that will inspire the reader to value each day as a unique adventure and experience.

Hannah Snell was an 18th-century woman who disguised herself as a man and became a soldier. This extremely popular biography centers around a recurrent 18th century trope of cross-dressing that subversively challenged social expectations and gender norms.
The US Lighthouse Board established Point No Point Light Station in 1879 to aid ships navigating to and from Puget Sound and the emerging port cities of Seattle and Tacoma. But the point was long an important place: a landmark for Coast Salish peoples traveling by water to fishing sites and for trade; a thriving community led by Suquamish leader ?al?q?m (pronounced "Challacum"); the site of the 1855 treaty signing that made a large swath of western Washington available for nonnative settlement; and an important foraging ground for fish, migratory birds, and sea mammals. Today, Point No Point is part of the larger community of Hansville on Washington's Kitsap Peninsula. Coast Salish peoples still fish here, and Point No Point Lighthouse remains an important aid to navigation. Fish, migratory birds, and sea mammals still regularly feed here on nutrients brought in from the ocean by powerful tidal currents. And residents and visitors alike are drawn to the point's beaches and breathtaking views.
