The sense of smell is at least equally important to may animals as sight and hearing. This important fact had previously been largely overlooked and is the subject of this fascinating study of the animal kingdom, The Language of Smell, originally published in 1976. Robert Burton, a zoologist and writer on wildlife, surveys the use of the sense of smell, from ants and butterflies, through birds, to whales and other mammals, and to human beings themselves. He describes the organs of smell and discusses the theories as to the way that odours are converted into nerve impulses. He considers the recent scientific advances in the field, including the observations on wild animals and laboratory experiments which show how smell is used for finding food, repelling enemies and for navigation. Many animals also use smell for communication. They produce special odours, called pheromones, that act as signals to members of their own species. Robert Burton shows how pheromones play a particularly important part in the social and sexual lives of insects and mammals, and that human beings also make more use of their sense of smell than had been thought. Throughout the book illustrations and line drawings are used to clarify the descriptions of the vital and exciting ‘language of smell’.

'One of the indispensable books' Philip Pullman 'The best book ever written' Guardian With an introduction by Becca Rothfeld. Dryness, paleness, waking, sighing, despair, frenzy, death: love's repercussions can be dire indeed. Perhaps that is why Robert Burton devoted the largest part of his pioneering 17th-century psychological work, The Anatomy of Melancholy, to this supreme passion. Edited to offer the modern reader easier access to this classic text, this abridged version preserves all the fantastic variety of the original, as Burton knits together stories and quotations drawn from millennia of European literature in order to understand love's causes, consequences, and cures. We encounter gods and goddesses, ancient kings and queens, lascivious monks and pure-hearted shepherds, marriages happy and unhappy, allurements natural and unnatural, and, most importantly, many cures for love-melancholy, from the obvious to the arcane. Intricate yet commonsensical, learned yet earthy, and twinkling throughout with ironic warmth, Burton's masterpiece speaks to the deepest concerns of the human heart as well today as it did four centuries ago. Part of the Pushkin Press Classics series: timeless storytelling by icons of literature, hand-picked from around the globe. Robert Burton (1577-1640) was born to a family of landed gentry in Leicestershire and matriculated at Oxford at the age of 15. He remained there for the rest of his life, and was eventually appointed librarian of Christ Church College. Inspired by his own struggle with melancholy, Burton began research into the subject, eventually amassing the collection of musings and quotations that would become The Anatomy of Melancholy. First published in 1621, the work was immensely popular, and was expanded and reprinted five times over the course of Burton's life. Becca Rothfeld is the non-fiction book critic at the Washington Post, the author of the essay collection All Things are Too Small, and an editor at The Point. She lives in Washington, DC with her husband, Zach, and her dog, Kafka.

The color blue & its aspects are, to Robert Burton, descriptors of very personal things. Many of those are examined / exposed / explained in the poems in this book called Blue. He has a knowledge of himself, &, importantly, the ability to pass on that knowledge in a well-crafted & insightful way that makes this small collection an excellent & delightful read. - Mark YoungIn Blue we are led through moments and situations that play with our understanding of reality, presence and absence, which slowly draw us in to question the 'exact shape/of an empty space'. He does it well.- Mark CobleyBlue is syntactically surprising: an exciting collection of poetry which, like good jazz, finds rhythm in the notes left unplayed and the words left unsaid. This is a layered work to return to time and again, each visit rewarded with new meaning.- Aaron Kent

'The best book ever written' Nicholas Lezard, GuardianRobert Burton's labyrinthine, beguiling, playful masterpiece is his attempt to 'anatomize and cut up' every aspect of the condition of melancholy, from which he had suffered throughout his life. Ranging over beauty, digestion, the planets, alcohol, goblins, kissing, poetry and the restorative power of books, among many other things, The Anatomy of Melancholy has fascinated figures from Samuel Johnson to Jorge Luis Borges since the seventeenth century, and remains an incomparable examination of the human condition in all its flawed, endless variety.Edited with an introduction by Angus Gowland

A collection of self-observations, it begins like this: "Higher Centers have a humble beginning. When one first experiences them, which may be for five seconds, a simple Presence without words is peering from one's machine." And so it begins -- self-observations by Robert Earl Burton, spiritual guide and teacher of the Fellowship of Friends. One-hundred forty-two pages later they end: "Your Soul is my art form, my task, my masterpiece. Your Presence is my book. It is a much bigger gift than any of us know to be associated with the conscious aspects of the Ray of Creation and the Absolute ... If you knew what Influence C know, you would all stand up and dance." This collection of quotations from formal meetings, dinners, visits to museums, art galleries, and foreign countries where his students live represents a sample of Mr. Burton's effort over nearly fifty years to communicate not just the higher states he is experiencing, but also in the signature form of a true teacher showing us how to experience them ourselves. Simply put, what are these states and how can we reach them ourselves? Recorded, transcribed and printed over the years in thousands of daily cards, in journals, several books and an electronic database now available to his students worldwide, this edition of a still growing collection is being made available for the first time. It is a thanksgiving to everyone on the Planet still living the answer to Rilke's Question. Simply Be.

The Anatomy of Melancholy: What it is, with all the kinds, causes, symptoms, prognostics, and several cures of it. In three partitions. With their several sections, members, and subsections, philosophically, medically, historically opened and cut up. The Anatomy of Melancholy. Robert Burton (8 February 1577 - 25 January 1640) was an English scholar at Oxford University, best known for the classic The Anatomy of Melancholy. He was also the incumbent of St Thomas the Martyr, Oxford, and of Seagrave in Leicestershire. On its surface, the book is presented as a medical textbook in which Burton applies his vast and varied learning, in the scholastic manner, to the subject of melancholia (which includes, although it is not limited to, what is now termed clinical depression). Though presented as a medical text, The Anatomy of Melancholy is as much a sui generis work of literature as it is a scientific or philosophical text, and Burton addresses far more than his stated subject.
