In 1897 the cry "Gold " resounds in the Yukon and reverberates round the world, promising riches for many but realizing the dreams of only a few. The yellow metal's siren-call lures hopefuls from crowded cities and barren farmsteads, cajoling them, na ve, unprepared and ill-equipped, to cross the harsh wilderness of the Canadian North-West. Many will succumb to brutal, implacable Nature. Those who survive to seek fortunes, will discover that desire alone does not ensure success. This is Fergal's story, orphaned in the turmoil of Irish dispossession, growing to manhood among his enemies, then forced to flee. It is the saga of his abandoned love Aileen who, despite her pregnancy, tries to follow him to Canada. It chronicles the life and times of Nicholas Craven, ill-suited for life as scion of an aristocratic family. All have been affected by life at Haddington Hall and their lives and fate are inextricably entwined. To survive they must face rigours as fierce as the torrents that shred the flesh of the unfortunates who drown in the Yukon waters.

Raven's Cry is a Northwest Coast classic -- a moving and powerful work that is a fictionalized retelling of the near destruction of the Haida nation. The Haida are a proud and cultured people, whose home is Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands) off the coast of northern British Columbia. Until the first Europeans arrived in 1775, the Haida were the lords of the coast. The meeting of cultures was a fateful one: the Europeans had the advantages of firearms and immunity to their own deadly diseases. In just 150 years, the Haida and their culture were pushed to the edge of extinction.Christie Harris recreates this tale of tragedy and the ultimate survival of native spirit with dignity, beauty and ethnographic accuracy.

The Hebrew Bible is, in part, a history of individuals who, in order to retain faith in God, were led to rebel against and question what was being confidently affirmed about God. Jacob, Moses, Jeremiah, and the authors of many of the Psalms are obvious examples. Robert Davidson tracks this important theme as it emerges in the patriarchal, Mosaic, and prophetic traditions of the Hebrew Bible. He helps the reader see that this theme is particularly relevant today when many, even within the believing community, find themselves forced to question and doubt--and often do so with unnecessarily guilty consciences.

Robert Davidson is an octogenarian and although born in Aberdeen, he has lived in Banchory, on Royal Deeside for the past 45 years. He started writing his ' Comments on Political, Economic & Social Events' as a hobby in the 1980's, endeavouring to capture a variety of interesting events which he thought would be of general interest to many, in particular those living in the Banchory area. He approached the editor of the local weekly 'Deeside Piper Newspaper' and asked if he would consider publishing them. Following their acceptance, the earlier ones were entitled 'This and That' in 1993. It was then decided some time later to re-title the column 'Deesider'. He continued to submit these until 1998.

In 1982, the fledgling Native nonprofit Sealaska Heritage Institute held a dance-and-culture festival to celebrate the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures of Southeast Alaska. A couple of hundred Native people gathered in Juneau for the event, called Celebration. They could not have imagined then that Celebration woud spark a movement across the region - a renaissance of Native culture that prompted people largely unfamiliar with their heritage to learn their ancestral songs and dances and to make regalia for future Celebrations.Today, Celebration is the largest cultural event in the state, drawing thousands of people to the five-day biennial festival. Celebration: Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian Dancing on the Land, featuring the work by the noted Alaska photographer Bill Hess, includes images from the first Celebrations to the present-day festivals. It is both an introduction to Native cultures and a cherished keepsake for the people who have participated in Celebration.Sealaska Heritage Institute is a regional Native nonprofit organization serving the indigenous peoples of Southeast Alaska. The Institute was founded in 1980 to administer cultural programs for Sealaska Corporation, a Native for-profit company formed under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. The Institute's mission is to perpetuate and enhance Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures.

Robert Davidson finds the Old Testament books of Ecclesiastes and the Song of Solomon to be both fascinating and challenging, exploring life's ultimate meaning and the concept of love as expressions of God's design for humankind.Fascinating, surprising, challenging—these are among the words used by Robert Davidson to describe the two books covered in this commentary. He writes that these two books, linked in tradition to Solomon, share “a refreshing honesty and a healthy exploration of the most powerful of human emotions, presented to us in the conviction that all of life, its unanswered questions and its passions, its joys and its frustrations, come to us from God.” The book of Ecclesiastes concerns the ultimate meaning of life itself and reminds us that we can be happy even amid uncertainty. The Song of Solomon invites us to an exploration of love that reminds us of God's unending care for the world. The Daily Study Bible series seamlessly continues the legacy of William Barclay’s renowned New Testament series by delving into the texts of the Old Testament, weaving together ancient wisdom and modern insights for a transformative reading experience. Perfectly tailored for individual study, spirited group discussions, or classroom exploration, the Daily Study Bible series offers an indispensable resource for spiritual seekers and scholars alike. Within these volumes, readers will encounter a profound exploration of the Scriptures, uncovering the profound messages they held in the past and discerning their relevance in the present.
