This book presents the importance of the role of creativity, particularly everyday creativity, in the lives of people on a mental health recovery journey.Through a review of historical and contemporary literature and research findings on the topic, the book starts by giving readers an idea of the state of play of conceptualisations of both creativity and recovery. The authors arrive at and present their own definitions of these concepts, using autoethnography to bring their own experiences into the text. They then illustrate to the reader what creativity in recovery looks like in practice, through interviews with and written accounts from creative individuals who have experienced a mental health recovery journey, grounding the theory with tangible stories of application. The interviews are analysed, with themes picked out and a model of creativity and recovery produced by the authors. Implications and possible future directions are then discussed. This unique presentation of creative recovery will be of interest to a wide range of mental health professionals, specifically those studying or practising mental health recovery and creative therapies.

The Heartless Murder of Nettie Sachs: And the Survival of Her American Dream
Born in Lithuania in 1885 under the rule of Russian Tsars, Nettie was ever aware of the injustice levied on her Jewish people. Rules limited their freedom, reducing their status to that of second-class citizens. Additionally; Nettie challenged her own religion's system of excluding girls from Talmud instruction, which the male-dominated Jewish society deemed to be the exclusive right of men.Nettie fled to America with Russian Cossacks hot on her trail for a murder that occurred during a pogrom while she was defending her husband. In America, she found opportunity, but not without its perils. She took advantage of America's freedoms and became educated, continuing to navigate the male-dominated society with her resolve to live the American Dream, Nettie's natural sexuality and intelligence attracted five husbands and produced six children, who in turn contributed twelve grandchildren. This was her legacy to America. Her life's story unfolded as her adopted country fought two wars, adjusted to an immigrant crisis, and saw the start of the union movement, the Ku Klux Klan, and segregation.Tragically; Nettie--a twice-widowed young wife and mother--lost her life at age 37 at the hands of the son of a man whose romantic interests she had rejected years before in the old country. Envious of her new found wealth, her spurned suitor was determined to claim it as his own. He sent his son,13 years younger than Nettie, to court her, then marry her. Evil occult forces seemed to follow Nettie's every move after her third marriage, only ending with her death after the fifth. The sensational trial of her last husband for her violent murder was followed in newspapers across the country. Her life in America played out against a backdrop of the Roaring Twenties, Prohibition, bootleg liquor, ragtime music and speakeasies. Nettie became in her mind, and in reality; a true American. She did her best to raise her children and instill in them her passion for justice and freedom. Her strength and determination live on in three generations of successful Americans, her legacy.

Art of Cycling

The bicyclist is under attack from all directions - the streets are ragged, the air is poison, and the drivers are angry. As if that weren't enough, the American cyclist must carry the weight of history along on every ride. After a brief heyday at the turn of the twentieth century, American cyclists fell out of the social consciousness, becoming an afterthought when our cities were planned and built. Cyclists today are left to navigate through a hard and unsympathetic world that was not made for them. Yet, with the proper attitude and a bit of knowledge, cyclists can thrive in this hostile environment.Covering much more than just riding a bike in traffic, author Robert Hurst paints, in uncanny detail, the challenges, strategies, and art of riding a bike on America's modern streets and roadways. The Art of Cycling dismantles the bicycling experience and slides it under the microscope, piece by piece. Its primary concern is safety, but this book goes well beyond the usual tips and how-to, diving in to the realms of history, psychology, sociology, and economics.

As sensible as it may be in this era of enhanced environmental consciousness (and super high fuel prices), a switch to bicycle commuting - on the individual level, that is - doesn't necessarily happen overnight. As anyone who has tried forgoing four wheels for two can attest, certain questions arise: Will an inexpensive bike do, or do I need the $1,500 one? What do I wear? (Do I have to show up at work in Lycra shorts?) Is it okay to ignore Stop signs? What to do when, halfway to or from work ...a tire blows? Compact and user-friendly, "The Bicycle Commuter's Pocket Guide" is for those just starting to ride a bicycle to work (or seriously thinking about it) and for those already doing so, but who could use a handy little reference in their packs!
Cyclist's Manifesto

Cyclist's Manifesto

Robert Hurst

Globe Pequot Press
2009
pokkari
Robert Hurst takes off his gloves to lay out the case in favor of the bicycle as today's superior mode of transport - and to voice a resounding call to action for people to use it. In an engaging narrative that takes us from the past to the present and into the future, the author visits a surprising variety of places and historical moments. Hurst argues that the West's aversion to bicycling for transportation is a unique historical - cultural absurdity based largely on false assumptions and bad information. Humorous but more than a little exasperated, "The Cyclist's Manifesto" paints a tantalizing picture of just what the effects of substantially increased bicycle usage might be - the health care savings would be astronomical, for example, and the ways that individuals and governments can go about wresting back control over their energy destiny.
