A Young Soul Maturing during Another Summer in the North Woods on the Big Lake
A young boy, Bobby, age nine, spends part of the summer at his aunt and uncle's resort in the north woods. He encounters many people-old friends, new friends, strange characters-and sets out on many adventures with these individuals as well as with his uncle and aunt. Problems arise as these strange individuals enter the story to disrupt his visit. He confronts issues of trust, bullying, and social/emotional conflicts with these characters. He learns at this age that adults have and keep secrets, and sometimes help as a resolution for problem solving can come from unexpected sources. At the end of this visit, he grows to a state that people regard him as "more grown up" and begin to call him Bob.

Multiple editions, some containing new material, were published in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Today's readers will find this glimpse into the beginning of figure skating fascinating. This edition includes the full text of the original 1772 edition and later additions, an introduction and commentary, a comprehensive summary of the previous editions, and a new section on Jones's skates.

The career of Rear Admiral Winfield Scott Schley, unfolding on land and sea, offers a compelling account of a pivotal time in the history of the US Navy and maritime warfare. Remembered chiefly for his role in the in Spanish-American War, Schley led the US Navy to victory at the Battle of Santiago, was promoted to rear admiral, then found himself accused of timidity and cowardliness in battle and subject to a controversial Court of Inquiry. The dispute and its resolution, known as the Sampson-Schley Controversy, impact the navy to this day. Schley graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1860 and advanced quickly through the ranks. After fighting in the Civil War, sailing the seven seas, and visiting many foreign countries, he played a vital part in the formation of the “New Steel Navy” as the fleet converted from the era of sail to steam. In Rear Admiral Schley: An Extraordinary Life at Sea and on Shore, Robert A. Jones tells a stirring tale of a remarkable commander whose cool-headed courage under fire and in hand-to-hand combat made him a highly respected leader whom men would follow willingly. His skills and proven leadership led to his being asked to conduct diplomatic missions in several countries, to supervise ship construction, to direct two lighthouse districts, to intervene in a civil war in Chile, and to lead the famous mission to rescue the Greely Arctic expedition. This meticulously researched biography will shed additional light on the career of an illustrious, if previously lesser-known leader who helped shape the US Navy we know today.
The Welsh Criminal Justice System

The Welsh Criminal Justice System

The Welsh criminal justice system is unique. While the country has its own devolved government and parliament, there is no Welsh equivalent of the Scottish or Northern Irish justice systems. Rather, the writ of England and Wales criminal justice institutions continues to run. Yet the extensive responsibilities of Wales’s devolved institutions ensure that they necessarily play a significant role in criminal justice. As a result, the Welsh criminal justice system operates across a ‘jagged edge’ of devolved and reserved powers and responsibilities. This book provides the first academic account of this system. It demonstrates not only that Wales has some of the worst criminal justice outcomes in western Europe, but that even if the will existed to try to address these problems, the current constitutional underpinnings of the Welsh criminal justice system would make it nigh-on impossible. Based on official data and in-depth interviews, this is an urgent and challenging book, required reading for anyone interested in Welsh politics and society.

Sometimes, we can all try so hard to avoid causing ourselves pain that we don't live our lives to the full - and people with intellectual disabilities are no different. Based on principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Living Your Best Life provides guided self-help materials for a person with intellectual disabilities to work through alongside a supporter such as a paid carer, family member or mental health professional. The tools and guidance help the individual identify what is important to them and move towards a life where worries and doubts do not stop them doing activities they enjoy or trying new things. Each chapter includes separate sections for supporters and for the person with intellectual disabilities (which can be read to them if necessary). The book also includes a wide range of exercises, graded by difficulty so as to be matched to an individual's specific abilities and challenges.
Children at the Battle of Gettysburg - Their Unforgettable Summer
The children of the 19th century were no different than today's kids. They looked forward to summer and enjoying the pleasant weather. However, it wasn't all fun; most still had their daily chores to do, just as they did during the rest of the year - many farms and orchards were in Gettysburg. In 1863, America's Civil War between the Northern and Southern states was in its third year. Most of the fighting was taking place in the south, so Gettysburg and its 2400 residents were spared the devastation which came along with the battles. They were truly aware of the ongoing war; many fathers, sons, and brothers answered the call when President Abraham Lincoln asked the Northern states, as he did of Pennsylvania, to support the Union cause. For the children of Gettysburg, it would not be their normal summer. There were always rumors about the Confederates coming towards Gettysburg, but this time it was true, and it would indeed be their "unforgettable summer".

Learning Arabic in Renaissance Europe (1505-1624)
From the first Arabic grammar printed at Granada in 1505 to the Arabic editions of the Dutch scholar Thomas Erpenius (d.1624), some audacious scholars - supported by powerful patrons and inspired by several of the greatest minds of the Renaissance – introduced, for the first time, the study of Arabic language and letters to centres of learning across Europe. These pioneers formed collections of Arabic manuscripts, met Arabic-speaking visitors, studied and adapted the Islamic grammatical tradition, and printed editions of Arabic texts - most strikingly in the magnificent books published by the Medici Oriental Press at Rome in the 1590s. Robert Jones’ findings in the libraries of Florence, Leiden, Paris and Vienna, and his contribution to the history of grammar, are of enduring importance.
