A lively and engaging debate between four representative views on free will, completely revised and updated with new perspectives Four Views on Free Will is a robust and careful debate about free will, how it interacts with determinism and indeterminism, and whether we have it or not. Providing the most up-to-date account of four major positions in the free will debate, the second edition of this classic text presents the opposing perspectives of renowned philosophers John Martin Fischer, Robert Kane, Derk Pereboom, and Manuel Vargas. Substantially revised throughout, this new volume contains eight in-depth chapters, almost entirely rewritten for the new edition, in which the authors state their different positions on the debate, offer insights into how their views have evolved over the past fifteen years, respond to recent critical literature in the field, and interact and engage with each other in dialogue. In the first four chapters the authors defend their distinctive views about free will: libertarianism, compatibilism, hard incompatibilism, and revisionism. The subsequent four chapters consist of direct replies by each of the authors to the other three. Offering a one-of-a-kind interactive conversation about the most recent work on the subject, Four Views on Free Will, Second Edition provides a balanced and enlightening discussion on all the key concepts and conflicts in the free will debate. Part of the acclaimed Great Debates in Philosophy series, it remains essential reading for undergraduate and graduate students, lecturers and scholars in philosophy, ethics, free will, philosophy of mind, political philosophy, law, and related subjects.

Robert Kane is one of the most prominent contributors to debates on free will over the last 50 years. Here he discusses the evolution of his views since his 1996 volume The Significance of Free Will, and provides responses to some of the latest critical literature on them. He explains significant changes to his views on free will and related notions of moral responsibility, agency, and other related topics. In the first half of the book Kane presents an overview of his current views with the significant additions and alterations to them spelled out and defended in greater detail. In the second half he critically examines the influential views of the many other philosophers of the past twenty-five years who have defended alternative views of free will and moral responsibility, including prominent defenders of competing libertarian views, compatibilist views, free will skeptical views, revisionist views, illusionist views, and others. Kane's goal here is not to merely criticize these alternative views, but to show what he believes they get right and what aspects of many of them can be accommodated in the views of free will, moral responsibility, and other related topics defended in the book. His conclusion connects his views to certain ethical views he has developed, and to ideas in the philosophy of religion, including Eastern religions (Hinduism, Buddhism) and Western and Middle Eastern theistic traditions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). The Complex Tapestry of Free Will presents an up-to-date overview of the current state of arguments and views on free will and related topics of moral and legal responsibility in ethics, law, science and religion, accessible to those not already familiar with the free will literature, while also developing novel and complex ideas on difficult subjects.

Rob found himself in the chemotherapy ward of an old handsome hospital outhouse and struck up a conversation with a wonderful man by the name of John. "It's all about staying positive", he stated after I asked him how he had mentally dealt with over two years of treatment. This drove Rob to learn and understand 'the how' of positivity when faced with such a desperate reality. The symptoms, the surgeries, the waiting, the vastness of his new reality - it's all captured in this desperate tale that so many of us experience. Cancer and chemotherapy bring with it depression and anxiety, bundled with hopelessness and a sense of the fickleness of life. Rob chose to change his perspective; not to dwell on the negative and to live in the positive. Rob discovers and records all the coping mechanisms he feels can help patients, support networks and medical practitioners alike to find positivity and cope with cancer. This easy to navigate book gives the reader an understanding of the cancer journey, a guide through each coping mechanism to find positivity, and an explanation of chemotherapy nutrition to nourish a body ravaged by cancer and chemicals, all of which the medical industry didn't provide him throughout his journey. Rob has weaved his extensive research of medicine and science into a must-read story of a cancer and chemotherapy patient's experience. He explains the importance of fasting and chemotherapy nutrition including what not to consume.

Do We Have Free Will?

In this little but profound volume, Robert Kane and Carolina Sartorio debate a perennial question: Do We Have Free Will? Kane introduces and defends libertarianism about free will: free will is incompatible with determinism; we are free; we are not determined. Sartorio introduces and defends compatibilism about free will: free will is compatible with determinism; we can be free even while our actions are determined through and through. Simplifying tricky terminology and complicated concepts for readers new to the debate, the authors also cover the latest developments on a controversial topic that gets us entangled in questions about blameworthiness and responsibility, coercion and control, and much more. Each author first presents their own side, and then they interact through two rounds of objections and replies. Pedagogical features include standard form arguments, section summaries, bolded key terms and principles, a glossary, and annotated reading lists. Short, lively and accessible, the debate showcases diverse and cutting-edge work on free will. As per Saul Smilansky’s foreword, Kane and Sartorio, "present the readers with two things at once: an introduction to the traditional free will problem; and a demonstration of what a great yet very much alive and relevant philosophical problem is like."Key Features:Covers major concepts, views and arguments about free will in an engaging formatAccessible style and pedagogical features for students and general readersCutting-edge contributions by preeminent scholars on free will.

Ethics and the Quest for Wisdom

Ethics and the Quest for Wisdom

Modernity has challenged the ancient ideal of a universal quest for wisdom, and today's world of conflicting cultures and values has raised further doubts regarding the possibility of objective ethical standards. Robert Kane refocuses the debate on the philosophical quest for wisdom, and argues that ethical principles about right action and the good life can be seen to emerge from that very quest itself. This book contends that the search for wisdom involves a persistent striving to overcome narrowness of vision that comes from the inevitable limitations of finite points of view. When applied to questions of value and the good life, this striving has ethical implications about the way we should treat ourselves and others. This study argues for the merits of this central thesis against alternative theories in contemporary normative ethics, and discusses its practical applications for social ethics, political philosophy, law and moral education.

Sir Robert Kane (1809–1890) was a noted Irish chemist, becoming a professor at the age of twenty-two. His work on compounds of ammonia were considered internationally important. His 1,200-page textbook, Elements of Chemistry (1841) was considered 'the best extant in the English language' and was widely used in England and America. The Industrial Resources of Ireland, published in 1844 and reissued in 1845, had originated in a series of lectures to the Royal Dublin Society, and contains a mass of factual detail on the energy, mineral, agricultural, capital and labour resources of the country. Kane believed that Ireland did not lack natural resources so much as the knowledge of how to exploit them, and technical education was necessary. The book outlines an ambitious plan to harness the raw materials which Ireland possessed, or was believed to possess. However, the outbreak of the Famine overtook his schemes.
