Excess noise and light challenge the ecological integrity of the natural environment, along with our enjoyment of the natural world. Although a substantive body of scientific and professional literature on quiet and darkness in national parks and related areas has developed over the past two decades, such work has been widely scattered over academic and professional journals in several environmental fields. This anthology brings together both new and previously published work on the topic. An introduction outlines the evolution of current thought about what constitutes national park resources and suggests a series of conceptual frameworks to inform management of natural quiet and natural darkness. Individual chapters address the biological, ecological, and experiential components of both of these valuable resources. A final chapter develops a series of principles or best practices for studying, managing, and protecting natural quiet and natural darkness in the national parks and related reserves.

As the popularity of the national parks grows, so do the challenges of visiting and managing them. This innovative book uses crowdsourcing - postings by park visitors on a range of social media sites - to start 100 conversations on issues associated with visiting and managing the national parks. The authors then use their experience and expertise to prepare short, plainspoken, and engaging essays that respond to the postings and complete the conversations. The book is written for park visitors, managers, and students. The authors are university professors who teach the history, philosophy, and management of national parks, conduct long-term programs of research for the National Park Service, and have spent years working and living in the national parks. This inventive, thoughtful, and inviting book addresses a wide range of national park-related issues, guides readers on how to more effectively plan and conduct their national park visits, informs park planners and managers about what visitors think about the parks, introduces the latest scientific and professional information on park management, helps prepare students for careers in park management, and enhances public appreciation and protection of the national parks. Preservation of our national parks has always required an active engagement with the public. The authors take this to a new level by responding directly to the many questions and comments posed by visitors on social media with thoughtful and informative responses. Jonathan B. Jarvis, eighteenth Director of the National Park Service

There are twenty-four World Heritage Sites scattered across the United States. These U.S. World Heritage Sites are the most important natural and cultural areas around the world; these are the places that the United Nations, and the 167 countries it represents, have recognized as the most important contributions to the world’s heritage. World Heritage Sites are premier visitor destinations, yet most people are not familiar with the World Heritage Site designation and many of the places included on the World Heritage List. A Guide to America's World Heritage Sites: The Heritage of Humanity describes these twenty-four sites, including why they are so important, the visitor attractions they feature, and logistical advice on how to visit them.

America's National Heritage Areas

America's National Heritage Areas

There are fifty-five National Heritage Areas scattered across the US and they continue to grow in number and diversity. Though they’re not officially national parks, their conservation, education, and recreation related objectives echo those of the national parks: to conserve nationally significant natural and cultural landscapes and to make them available to the public for purposes of education, recreation, and sustainable tourism-related economic development. But the methods of achieving these objectives are different—very different—than those used in the national parks. While both national parks and NHAs are established by Congress, national parks are conventionally large areas of public land that are owned and managed by the National Park Service (NPS). NHAs take a more inclusive, partnership-based approach to their work; they offer local citizens, government at all levels, non-profit organizations, and private sector enterprises the opportunity to define, celebrate and conserve the natural, historic, cultural, scenic and recreational resources that have been vital in shaping their identity and destiny. NHAs are composed primarily of private lands; they’re living landscapes where participants reside, work and play. Each chapter in this guidebook describes the remarkable natural and cultural resources that define NHAs and highlights nearby visitor attractions, enticing readers to visit NHAs and to enjoy and appreciate the attractions offered.
