Jodie Mae, a young woman, is desperate to break free of the stigma of being "white trash" and makes sacrifices few women would consider. Eventually, that determination brings her a head-on confrontation with the male-dominated culture of '40s and '50s Mississippi. She takes them on, "I'll run for sheriff," and nearly loses her life in the process. She falls in love, twice, but love takes a back seat to her need to "be somebody" to live as an equal, not second class. Rogers was born in Mississippi and, after a tour of duty in the army, graduated as an engineer from Mississippi State University and worked in aerospace. He graduated as a lawyer from USC and opened an office. He obtained an LLM from Tulane to specialize in real estate and finance and worked for lenders. He has written over twenty books.

The third edition of The Ecology and Silviculture of Oaks is an updated and expanded edition that explores oak forests as responsive ecosystems. New chapters emphasize the importance of fire in sustaining and managing oak forests, the effects of a changing climate, and advanced artificial regeneration techniques. This new edition expands on silvicultural methods for restoring and sustaining oak woodlands and savannahs, and on management of ecosystem services, including wildlife habitat. It also incorporates new material on evaluating landscape-scale, and cumulative effects of management action compared with inaction. Nine of the fifteen chapters cover updated information on the geographic distribution of US oaks, oak regeneration dynamics, site productivity, stocking and stand development, even- and uneven-aged silvicultural methods, and growth and yield. This edition includes a new section with colour illustrations for improved visualization of complex relationships. This book is intended for forest and wildlife managers, ecologists, silviculturists, environmentalists, and students of those fields.
Brother James and the Second Coming
Trevor Tyson sold his successful software company for twenty million to a Las Vegas company including all programs he develops for three years afterwards, a condition Tyson wants to avoid since he has two software programs he wants to market. To distract the buyer, he becomes a "street preacher" calling himself Brother James. He does it in style using a marketing company with Hollywood experience. His "message" sounds like he's advocating revolution, getting Washington's attention which asks Chief Wasserman of the San Diego police department for a report. Bishop Bone, in town speaking to California police officers, is asked by the Chief for his opinion. He agrees and inadvertently becomes part of a media report which causes his bank clients to end their legal relationship with him. When he tries to correct the mistake, he becomes involved in Tyson's murder and the attempt to add him to the list.

"Mushroom Essences" is a comprehensive introduction to using the essences of mushrooms and other fungi as a form of subtle body medicine that treats body, heart, and soul. While flower essences are frequently used by alternative health practitioners, mushroom essences are not widely known. Flower essences represent solar energy and bring light into darkness; mushrooms represent the underworld, and are lunar, dark, and mysterious. Like all manner of living beings, they express energetic fields, which can be captured and used in clinical and private psychological work. Because no physical substance of the mushroom remains, they can do no harm. But in the hands of a skilled practitioner, mushroom essences can help peel away the steely bars of long-held emotional and mental imprisonment. In this book, Robert Dale Rogers, a professional herbalist and author of "The Fungal Pharmacy," provides a guide to extracting and using mushroom essences for a variety of ailments. Rogers delves into the spiritual and psychological connections that can be forged through the use of fungi as medicine, emphasizing the role of self-care and self-knowledge in the healing process. He provides informative and detailed descriptions of 48 important mushroom essences, as well as directions on how to capture and use each one. Organized as an alphabetical reference guide, each entry explains the essence and effects of a particular mushroom or lichen, accompanied by persuasive case studies. "Mushroom Essences" is an excellent resource for those interested in alternative and energetic healing practices, especially flower essences, as well as for mushroom enthusiasts who are interested in the healing properties of fungi. A Cree Healer and His Medicine Bundle

A Cree Healer and His Medicine Bundle

David Young; Robert Rogers; Russell Willier

North Atlantic Books,U.S.
2015
pokkari
With the rise of urban living and the digital age, many North American healers are recognizing that traditional medicinal knowledge must be recorded before being lost with its elders. "A Cree Healer and His Medicine Bundle" is a historic document, including nearly 200 color photos and maps, in that it is the first in which a native healer has agreed to open his medicine bundle to share in writing his repertoire of herbal medicines and where they are found. Providing information on and photos of medicinal plants and where to harvest them, anthropologist David E. Young and botanist Robert D. Rogers chronicle the life, beliefs, and healing practices of Medicine Man Russell Willier in his native Alberta, Canada. Despite being criticized for sharing his knowledge, Willier later found support in other healers as they began to realize the danger that much of their traditional practices could die out with them. With Young and Rogers, Willier offers his practices here for future generations. At once a study and a guide, "A Cree Healer and His Medicine Bundle" touches on how indigenous healing practices can be used to complement mainstream medicine, improve the treatment of chronic diseases, and lower the cost of healthcare. The authors discuss how mining, agriculture, and forestry are threatening the continued existence of valuable wild medicinal plants and the role of alternative healers in a modern health care system. Sure to be of interest to ethnobotanists, medicine hunters, naturopaths, complementary and alternative health practitioners, ethnologists, anthropologists, and academics, this book will also find an audience with those interested in indigenous cultures and traditions.
