Choral Pedagogy, Third Edition, is the ideal text for voice teachers, choral conductors, church musicians, and professional and amateur singers who wish to develop strategies for lifelong singing. It concisely and clearly presents the principles of voice pedagogy from the perspective of both conducting and voice science in a user-friendly fashion, including helpful charts and simple anatomic diagrams. In addition, it offers teaching methods from history and philosophy, medical and voice science, and pedagogical concepts from active musical experts. Special attention is given to the needs of amateur singers and conductors. Topics covered include choral diction, posture and seating, rehearsal practices, and matters of vocal health. For the third edition, the authors have completely revised the text, updating the medical information and expanding the exercises. They have also added three new chapters: * A chapter entitled "Singing in the 21st Century" that considers the vocal/choral demands of the choral repertoire being written in this century. * A chapter on teaching young boys to sing written by Vic Oakes, the conductor of the Chattanooga Boys Choir.* A chapter entitled "The Value of Lifelong Singing." With its updates and additions, Choral Pedagogy, Third Edition, is a valuable resource for students of choral conducting, music education, church music, and choral singing.

This book presents a review of the literature on voice disorders in patients with fibromyalgia with a thorough discussion of the pathophysiology of those disorders. The impact of poor muscle contraction and the decrease in functional capacity on voice are discussed in the context of this syndrome. Similarly, the adverse effect on phonation of the decrease in maximum expiratory force and of dyspnea in patients with fibromyalgia is highlighted. The authors also discuss the laryngeal manifestation of the numerous comorbidities associated with this syndrome, such as chronic fatigue syndrome, gastro-esophageal reflux disease, obesity, sleep apnea, and autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Treatment-induced change in voice quality also is highlighted, and ideas for future research on the link between fibromyalgia and phonation are suggested. Voice Disorders in Fibromyalgia is beneficial for otolaryngologists, laryngologists, family doctors, internists, rheumatologists, speech-language pathologists, phoniatrists, voice therapists, and physiotherapists.

This atlas provides more than 400 images and video-recordings that describe in detail the step-by-step of the surgical techniques in-office blue laser surgery for benign and pre-malignant diseases of the larynx. It is the first atlas that compiles such a large number of cases, more than 50, and displays pre, intra, and post-operative images. The last two decades witnessed marked advances in technology including the development of the flexible endoscope with a working channel as well as the glass fibers for delivery of lasers. These advances often spared the patient the risk of general anesthesia and the morbidities of suspension microlaryngoscopy. The evolution in laryngology practice toward office-based surgery has broadened the use of the blue laser in the office with relatively good patient tolerance and surgical outcomes. Atlas of Office-based Blue Laser Therapy in Laryngology is very educational to voice care providers who seek office-based therapy for their patients such as otolaryngologists, laryngologists, speech-language pathologists, phoniatrists, and other voice therapists. Otolaryngologists can use the pictures and videos provided in this atlas to enrich their surgical technique and to build more experience in using this new type of laser that remains in its embryonic phase.

This book reviews the interface between the traits of civilization and voice. It addresses concepts such as where the human voice stands in society and what the impact of civilization is on voice as a means of communication across diverse cultures, social hierarchies, and religious practices.Understanding voice disorders in the context of civilization traits and changes, and analyzing the impact of those traits is invaluable for otolaryngologists, speech language pathologists, voice teachers and others engaged in the diagnosis, treatment and/or training of patients with dysphonia. The book highlights cross-cultural variations in voice acoustics and self-perceived dysphonia, and the impact of religious observance on voice. This information is crucial in differentiating the normal voice from the abnormal, given differences associated with various civilizations and cultures.Traits of Civilization and Voice Disorders providesa far-reaching perspective on the interface between the human voice and its surroundings; as a result, this book is situated as an invaluable resource for otolaryngologists, speech language pathologists, and voice teachers in the diagnosis, treatment and training of patients with voice disorders.

This book reviews the emerging role of blue laser as a new treatment modality. Laser surgery has revolutionized the treatment of patients with voice disorders. The choice of laser is based primarily on the characteristics of the laser such as wavelength, mode of delivery and spot size, and on the type of pathology that is being treated. Recently, a new laser with hybrid characteristics, namely cutting and hemostatic, has been introduced as the new generation of photoangiolytic lasers. This new laser—the blue laser with a wavelength of 445 nm—is gaining popularity as an alternative to the traditional KTP laser. The book begins with a review of lasers in laryngology, which is followed by a discussion of anesthesia considerations in office-based and OR-based laryngeal surgery. Subsequent chapters detail the surgical steps needed to be able to perform office-based blue laser procedures safely, including the mode of application and the use of adjunctive surgical procedures. These chapters present colored illustrations of various cases of laryngeal pathology before and after treatment. Video-recordings of surgeries performed in-office and in the operating room using the blue laser are included. Finally, the authors cover rare applications of blue laser therapy in laryngology. This is an ideal guide for otolaryngologists and laryngologists, as well as speech-language pathologists, phoniatricians and other voice therapists and trainers.

This book provides a detailed description of laryngeal procedures performed under topical anesthesia in an office setting. The last two decades have witnessed a major evolution in laryngology practice toward office-based surgery, thus reducing the risk of general anesthesia and containing healthcare costs while also hastening recovery rates from the time of diagnosis. Beginning with a comprehensive review of the anatomy and physiology of phonation, the book then provides systematic assessment of patients with voice dysfunction secondary to structural and functional laryngeal disorders. It offers detailed instructions on patient selection, safety, tolerance, and proper administration of topical anesthesia. The book supplies detailed descriptions of the various surgical techniques commonly used in office-based laryngeal surgery using color illustrations, photographs and videos. Different surgical approaches are presented including transcervical, transnasal and per-oral techniques. Thebook also supplies a thorough review of the literature on the current status of the most commonly performed office-based laryngeal surgeries including patient care, surgical outcome, and complications. Office-Based Laryngeal Surgery will help laryngologists operating on awake patients in an office setting to be both well-equipped and well-informed.

Medical Musings

Medical Musings

Robert Thayer Sataloff

Compton Publishing Ltd
2019
pokkari
In the second edition of his book of musings on leading issues facing medical doctors today (and ultimately us, as their clients) Professor Sataloff examines new areas for our consideration - from, among many others, aging and medical professionals, through Medicare, to big data. The musings are arranged in sections covering education, research, publication, clinical practice and politics. Within each, issues cover a range of topics, including areas of controversy, such as gender, disruptive staff, healthcare insurance and the increasingly fuzzy line between qualified medical doctors and allied health professionals, while others seek to open the reader's eyes with views on medical education, learning and research, and how important teaching, mentoring and continuing education can be.Attention is given to politics and how we all stand to learn from and, perhaps, educate and influence our legislators. As an author or co-author of 65 books and numerous papers in learned journals, Sataloff considers publication as an educational necessity for students, its value to physicians and surgeons, while also cautioning the reader on the standpoint, ethics and veracity of some of the materials and research that make it into print. A very interesting chapter reviews cognitive aging among medical professionals using translational data from, among others, the aviation industry and the FBI. Thought-provoking, illuminating, concise and very readable, this remains, in the Author's own words, a book which '...provides perspectives on education, publication, health care delivery, and other topics relevant to leadership in medicine, and more importantly to inspire thought and provoke debate'.
