Famous for Suits: the Story of Foster and Tetley, Clothiers and Outfitters of Goole
This book traces the history of Foster & Tetley Ltd, clothiers and outfitters, who traded in Goole, Yorkshire, from 1922 to 1982. As well as having a shop, the firm travelled the nearby villages supplying clothing to farming communities, mainly on credit, repaid in weekly instalments. They witnessed many social changes, serving two, sometimes three generations of the same families, sharing their joys and their sorrows as their children grew up to become customers themselves. The book has the following sections: The Early Days; The Stock; The Vehicles; The Village Rounds; From Church Street to Aire Street; The End. Appendices: Foster and Tetley staff; Customers on the 1963 Saturday round to Cowick, Snaith and Drax; Bruce Ward's list of acquaintances who have died.
Natural Language, Computer-Assisted Learning and Language-Impaired Children
This is a scanned copy of a thesis successfully submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Psychology, University of Hull, U.K. in 1987. We learn language by using it. Interaction with others through language is essential for normal language development. Children with delayed or impaired language may therefore benefit from additional experience of interacting through language in structured situations. This thesis explores how computers might help provide this experience. It reports a project in which programs were developed to hold written dialogues about screen objects, and observed in use by deaf and other language-impaired children. This version is published through www.lulu.com who should be able to supply it at the best price, and from where it can also be downloaded more cheaply in electronic form.
Computer-Assisted Language Learning for Deaf Children: a Natural Language Interface System
Originally a dissertation for the degree of Master of Science in the Department of Computation, UMIST (University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology), U.K., 1981. This is a scanned copy of the original, January 2010. The dissertation specifies a set of computer programs to allow learners to interact with a computer through written language. It sets out the computational foundations for an approach later investigated in a Ph.D. thesis, "Natural Language, Computer-Assisted Learning and Language-Impaired Children", by the same author, at the Department of Psychology, University of Hull, U.K., in 1987.

Convicts Coal and Banner Mine

Convicts Coal and Banner Mine

In the late 1870s, Jefferson County, Alabama, and the town of Elyton (near the future Birmingham) became the focus of a remarkable industrial and mining revolution. Together with the surrounding counties, the area was penetrated by railroads. Surprisingly large deposits of bituminous coal, limestone, and iron ore--the exact ingredients for the manufacture of iron and, later, steel--began to be exploited. Now, with transportation, modern extractive techniques, and capital, the region's geological riches began yielding enormous profits.A labor force was necessary to maintain and expand the Birmingham area's industrial boom. Many workers were native Alabamians. There was as well an immigrant ethnic work force, small but important. The native and immigrant laborers became problems for management when workers began affiliating with labor unions and striking for higher wages and better working conditions. In the wake of the management-labor disputes, the industrialists resorted to an artificial work force--convict labor. Alabama's state and county officials sought to avoid expense and reap profits by leasing prisoners to industry and farms for their labor. This book is about the men who worked involuntarily in the Banner Coal Mine, owned by the Pratt Consolidated Coal Company. And it is about the repercussions and consequences that followed an explosion at the mine in the spring of 1911 that killed 128 convict miners.
