Winner of the George Blazyca Prize 2021The Romanian Orthodox Church expanded significantly after the First World War, yet Protestant Repenter and schismatic Orthodox movements such as Old Calendarism also grew exponentially during this period, terrifying church leaders who responded by sending missionary priests into the villages to combat sectarianism. Several lay renewal movements such as the Lord's Army and the Stork's Nest also appeared within the Orthodox Church, implicating large numbers of peasants and workers in tight-knit religious communities operating at the margins of Eastern Orthodoxy.Bringing the history of the Orthodox Church into dialogue with sectarianism, heresy, grassroots religious organization and nation-building, Roland Clark explores how competing religious groups in interwar Romania responded to and emerged out of similar catalysts, including rising literacy rates, new religious practices and a newly empowered laity inspired by universal male suffrage and a growing civil society who took control of community organizing. He also analyses how Orthodox leaders used nationalism to attack sectarians as 'un-Romanian', whilst these groups remained indifferent to the claims the nation made on their souls.Situated at the intersection of transnational history, religious history and the history of reading, Sectarianism and Renewal in 1920s Romania challenges us to rethink the one-sided narratives about modernity and religious conflict in interwar Eastern Europe. The ebook editions are available under a CC BY-NC 3.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. The Discovery, is the initial book in a planned three book series featuring Wild Horse, a Christian Biker who is lead by God to be involved in dangerous circumstances, often saving others from certain death. He rides a Harley equipped with a sidecar which transports his best friend and partner Wolf. Wolf is a wild wolf which saved Wild Horse by pulling him out of a river in Utah when he was contemplating suicide. The Discovery is encouraging, engaging and entertaining and is a great "beach read" for those who appreciate that there is an amazing power available to each of us and also who enjoy reading about how much Christian Bikers accomplish in this generation. Virtually every page has spiritual truth direct from God's word which Wild Horse uses to achieve great victories. After being rescued from the river, God leads a rancher and his wife to the outer reaches of their extensive cattle and horse ranch to find and ultimately nurse him back to health. In the process God uses David and Rebecca Scott to tell Wild Horse the amazing story of a God that so loves him that he sent his only son, Jesus to live and die for him so that they may have an intimate unimpeded relationship. Wild Horse, because of his fall to the rocky river below, has lost his memory which God uses as a significant blessing as the enemy, Satan, is unable to replay failures and struggles which he uses as a tactic and a weapon against God's people. The result is a spiritually and physically strong warrior who knows nothing other than victory through God. Roland Clark the author has had and continues to have an interesting diverse background from being a Martial Arts Instructor, Western Horse Trainer and a long term professional in the Financial Services Industry. Roland loves to ride his own Harley on extended trips in Canada and the USA searching out beautiful and dramatic locations for his books settings.

Founded in 1927, Romania's Legion of the Archangel Michael was one of Europe's largest and longest-lived fascist social movements. In Holy Legionary Youth, Roland Clark draws on oral histories, memoirs, and substantial research in the archives of the Romanian secret police to provide the most comprehensive account of the Legion in English to date. Clark approaches Romanian fascism by asking what membership in the Legion meant to young Romanian men and women. Viewing fascism "from below," as a social category that had practical consequences for those who embraced it, he shows how the personal significance of fascism emerged out of Legionaries' interactions with each other, the state, other political parties, families and friends, and fascist groups abroad. Official repression, fascist spectacle, and the frequency and nature of legionary activities changed a person's everyday activities and relationships in profound ways. Clark's sweeping history traces fascist organizing in interwar Romania to nineteenth-century grassroots nationalist movements that demanded political independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It also shows how closely the movement was associated with the Romanian Orthodox Church and how the uniforms, marches, and rituals were inspired by the muscular, martial aesthetic of fascism elsewhere in Europe. Although antisemitism was a key feature of official fascist ideology, state violence against Legionaries rather than the extensive fascist violence against Jews had a far greater impact on how Romanians viewed the movement and their role in it. Approaching fascism in interwar Romania as an everyday practice, Holy Legionary Youth offers a new perspective on European fascism, highlighting how ordinary people "performed" fascism by working together to promote a unique and totalizing social identity.
