Graduate students in both theoretical and experimental physics will find this third edition of Intermediate Quantum Mechanics, refined and updated in 1986, indispensable. The first part of the book deals with the theory of atomic structure, while the second and third parts deal with the relativistic wave equations and introduction to field theory, making Intermediate Quantum Mechanics more complete than any other single-volume work on the subject.

A timely addition to the literature, this volume contains authoritative reviews of three important areas in the physics of elementary particles. Sam B. Treiman, in "Current Algebra and PCAC," reviews the present state of the weak interactions. In "Field Theoretic Investigations in Current Algebra," Roman Jackiw deals with recent developments in current algebra and its applications, giving particular attention to anomalies. David J. Gross covers the high energy inelastic lepton-hadron scattering in his paper, "The High Energy Behavior of Weak and Electromagnetic Interactions." Originally published in 1972. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Current algebra remains our most successful analysis of fundamental particle interactions. This collection of surveys on current algebra and anomalies is a successor volume to Lectures on Current Algebra and Its Applications (Princeton Series in Physics, 1972). Originally published in 1986. In 1947 J. Robert Oppenheimer organized a historic conference of physicists at Shelter Island, located off the eastern tip of Long Island, to discuss recent advances in theoretical physics and the direction of future research. Over three decades later, the physics community held another meeting, the 1983 Shelter Island Conference on Quantum Field Theory and the Fundamental Problems of Physics. This volume is the record of the 1983 conference; it also includes much valuable information on the 1947 conference, for which no formal proceedings were ever published. The latter-day conference included many of the participants from the prior event as well as younger physicists who have since become prominent figures in this field. Consequently, this volume is a vital document in the history of physics, of value to students and researchers in many branches of the subject. Topics include the new inflationary universe scenario; supersymmetry; Stephen Hawking's presentation, "The Cosmological Constant Is Probably Zero"; superunification and the seven-sphere; time as a dynamical variable; induced gravity; and an extensive and previously unpublished paper by Edward Witten on Kaluza-Klein theories. Contributors include Stephen L. Adler, Hans Bethe, M. J. Duff, Murray Gell-Mann, Alan H. Guth, Stephen W. Hawking, Roman Jackiw, Toichiro Kinoshita, W. E. Lamb, Jr., T. D. Lee, A. D. Linde, R. E. Marshak, Y. Nambu, K. Nishijima, John H. Schwarz, Silvan S. Schweber, Steven Weinberg, Victor Weisskopf, P. C. West, Edward Witten, and Bruno Zumino.

The Centre de recherches mathematiques (CRM) was created in 1968 by the Universite de Montreal to promote research in the mathematical sciences. It is now a national institute that hosts several groups and holds special theme years, summer schools, workshops, and a post-doctoral program. The focus of its scientific activities ranges from pure to applied mathematics and includes statistics, theoretical computer science, mathemat ical methods in biology and life sciences, and mathematical and theoretical physics. The CRM also promotes collaboration be tween mathematicians and industry. It is subsidized by the Nat ural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Fonds FCAR of the Province of Quebec, the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, and has private endowments. Current activities, fellowships, and annual reports can be found on the CRM Web page at www. CRM. UMontreal. CA. The CRM Series in Mathematical Physics includes mono graphs, lecture notes, and proceedings based on research pur sued and on events held at the CRM. Yvan Saint-Aubin Montreal Preface This monograph is derived from a series of six lectures which were given at the Centre de recherches mathematiques (CRM) in Montreal, in March and June 2000, while the author was holder of the Aisenstadt Chair. Precis During the March 2000 meeting of the Workshop on Strings, Du ality, and Geometry in Montreal, Canada, three lectures were delivered on topics in fluid mechanics, while the author was holder of the Aisenstadt Chair.

Diverse Topics In Theoretical And Mathematical Physics: Lectures By Roman Jackiw
In this volume, topics are drawn from field theory, especially gauge field theory, as applied to particle, condensed matter and gravitational physics, and concern a variety of interesting subjects. These include geometricalDtopological effects in quantum theory, fractional charge, time travel, relativistic quantized fields in and out of thermal equilibrium and quantum modifications of symmetry in physical systems. Many readers will find this a useful volume, especially theoretical physicists and mathematicians. The material will be of interest to both the expert who will find well-presented novel and stimulating viewpoints of various subjects and the novice who will find complete, detailed and precise descriptions of important topics of current interest, in theoretical and mathematical physics.
