Ricola is a Swiss global brand, famous for its herbal candies, based in the town of Laufen, near Basel. Emil Richterich, the company’s founder, began collecting works by local artists in the 1940s. Since 1975, the shareholders of the still family-owned business have been expanding the collection systematically with a focus on Swiss art. Collecting and presenting contemporary art is an aspect of Ricola's vibrant corporate culture and an expression of the owning family's integral cultural thinking. Open to the public, and exhibited in buildings designed that celebrated Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron have designed for Ricola by since 1983, the collection spans more than half a century and the represents the latest trends in contemporary art. This book offers a lively insight into the collection and its presence in Ricola’s corporate life. Richly illustrated, it provides survey of its holdings and structure, and explores its history. Contemporary art in context The main title of this second volume of Writings on Contemporary Art is borrowed from Claude Lévi-Strauss, whose thinking influenced a generation. Inspired by Marcel Proust, Lévi-Strauss wrote about the processes of producing painting, music, literature, calling the technique described by Proust "double articulation." This volume focuses primarily on works of art in which the "first-order units" are themselves artistic works that are cited, recombined, and reworked. The concepts of "primary objects" and of "double articulation" deepen our understanding of the disruption of sequences and the disturbance of cultural traditions. The works of art discussed in this book inscribe themselves in a context of transmission that is modified and renewed for experience in the present. Harald Szeemann ( 933–2 5) ist eine der prägendsten Figuren der neueren Ausstellungsgeschichte: Als Ausstellungsmacher unter Kuratoren faszinierte ihn die Ausstellung als Medium der Kunst. Im Zentrum dieser Publikation steht seine Methode, als „Autor" von Ausstellungen Kunstwerke sichtbar zu machen. Zentrale Orientierungsfiguren waren für ihn Aby Warburg und Alfred Jarry, mit dessen Wissenschaft der imaginären Lösungen er sich schon früh befasste, sowie Marcel Duchamp und Marcel Broodthaers, weiterhin James Johnson Sweeney, Brian O'Doherty, Donald Judd, Niele Toroni und Rémy Zaugg, deren Auffassung von Raum für das Verständnis der neueren Ausstellungsgeschichte wesentlich sind. Das Buch führt über die Bedeutung Szeemanns hinaus und fragt nach der aktuellen Relevanz von Ausstellungen für die zeitgenössische Kunst.

Kunstwerke lassen sich nicht allein auf die Lebensgeschichte von Künstlerinnen und Künstlern zurückführen, doch es wäre auch falsch anzunehmen, dass die Bedingungen der Produktion, seien sie sozialer, technischer oder persönlicher Natur, am Werk keine Spuren hinterlassen und für dessen Wirkung unerheblich wären. The mountain community of Amden am Walensee (Switzerland) was a place of social and artistic experiments as early as the beginning of the 20th century. In the last 15 years, many artists have been invited to exhibit in the Amden Atelier, a small farm, or to use the facilities for the production of a work of art. This publication includes all exhibitions and installations staged since 1999 and describes and discusses the individual art projects. The work is complemented by essays on the landscape, the place and its change of use to an exhibition space, on the curating concept and its development in recent years.

Die Berggemeinde Amden am Walensee (Schweiz) war bereits Anfang des 2 . Jahrhunderts ein Ort des gesellschaftlichen und künstlerischen Experiments. In den vergangenen 5 Jahre sind viele Künstlerinnen und Künstler eingeladen worden, im Atelier Amden, einer kleinen Scheune, eine Ausstellung zu zeigen oder die gegebene Situation für die Produktion eines Werkes zu nutzen. Die Ausstellungsreihe im Landschaftsraum von Amden ermöglichte den Künstlern die Realisierung situationsspezifischer Projekte vor Ort und dem Publikum eine individuelle, kontemplative Rezeption der Ausstellungen und Installationen. Die vorliegende Publikation zeigt alle seit 999 veranstalteten Ausstellungen und Installationen und beschreibt und diskutiert die einzelnen künstlerischen Projekte. Essays zur Landschaft, zur Scheune und ihrer Neunutzung als Aus-stellungsraum, zum kuratorischen Konzept und dessen Entwicklung in den vergangenen Jahren runden das Werk ab.

Pawel Althamer is responsible for some of the most expansive artworks of the past decade -- expansive not in the traditional, physical sense but in the social and experiential sense. Though he creates stunning sculptures of the human form, much of his work consists of human interaction, often placing the viewer's own consciousness in the starring role.
