Marianne von Werefkin played a key role in the development of expressionism in the early 20th century, thanks to her knowledge of the latest developments in Paris. She brought this to Germany and later Switzerland and developed a unique way of painting herself, using rhythm and colour to convey her vision and emotions. Social themes, such as the lives of workers and women, remained of great importance to her. Werefkin was at the cradle of several artists' networks, such as Der Blaue Reiter, which included her partner Alexej von Jawlensky as well as Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc and Gabriele Münter. Museum De Fundatie is the only museum in the Netherlands to have a work by Werefkin in its collection and, with this book, offers an overview of her colourful universe for the first time in the Netherlands. Several essays give a multifaceted impression of the life, work and significance of one of the greatest art innovators of the last century.

As a central artist of early modernism, Alexej von Jawlensky (born in Torshok, Russia, in 8 4, died in Wiesbaden in 94 ) considerably expanded the possibilities of painting. Based on an expressive, colorful appropriation of the world, by reducing form and intensifying color, he made his pictures an expression of an immaterial and spiritual truth. Despite the great individuality of his path, his work continues to give important inspirations to painting until today with respect to color, the serial, and the spiritual. The exhibition and catalogue present an exemplary selection of some seventy paintings and drawings and trace the development of the three big topics of " face, landscape, and still life," to which Jawlensky dedicated himself in his work. Werner Graeff – painter, graphic artist, typographer, photographer and sculptor – is an important Bauhaus artist and a significant representative of Constructivism in Germany. Prompted by his friend Mies van der Rohe he wrote his moving autobiography “Hürdenlauf durch das 20. Jahrhundert” (The Obstacle Race of the 20th century), which this volume publishes for the first time with a representative selection of texts. Werner Graeff ( 1901 – 1978 ) was a student at the Bauh aus in Weimar and from 1921 a member of the De Stijl Dutch artists’ group. Together with Willi Baumeister he was also closely associated with the “ring neue werbegestalter” founded in 1927 by Kurt Schwitters. At an early stage he focused much of his attent ion on film and photography, but in 1951 after his return to the Ruhr region from exile in Switzerland he once again increasingly devoted himself to his work as an independent artist. Illustrated with a large number of paintings, pictograms, multiples, dra wings and graphic works from the artist’s estate, this volume leads the reader through Graeff’s life and works and is at the same time a fascinating journey through the German art history of the 20 th century.

Karl von Pidoll (1847-1901) war Schuler von Arnold Boecklin (Florenz) und Vertrauter von Hans von Marees (Rom). Die bewunderte Kunst Marees', nicht die Boecklins war fur Pidoll zeit seines Lebens vorbildlich. Dies dokumentierte er mit seiner Schrift Aus der Werkstatt eines Kunstlers (1890). In seiner Frankfurter Zeit (1891-1900) wird seine Kunst jedoch aufgrund der Loesung von Marees (1885) und des Parisaufenthalts (1885-1891) vielseitiger. Die Arbeit stellt die erste umfassende und mit einem Werkkatalog versehene Monographie uber den Kunstler dar. Neben der prazise rekonstruierten Lebensbeschreibung, basierend auf bislang unveroeffentlichtem Quellenmaterial, werden seine Werke gattungsspezifisch getrennt betrachtet und alsdann nach Themen geordnet inhaltlich gedeutet. Zudem wird Pidolls Buch uber Marees erstmals ausfuhrlich behandelt. Beides fuhrt zu der Erkenntnis, dass es Pidoll in seinen Bildern stets um gedankliche Prazision und technische Diszipliniertheit ging, also um Objektivitat in einem allumfassenden Sinne.

Hans von Marees (1837-1887) ist als einer der bedeutendsten deutschen Maler des 19. Jahrhunderts zwar bekannt, als Bildnismaler aber unterschatzt und entsprechend wenig untersucht. Im Schaffen von Marees nehmen die Bildnisse von Verwandten und Bekannten eine wichtige Stellung ein. Sie sind grossenteils in der Fruhzeit des Kunstlers - in seinen Munchner Jahren, in Berlin und Dresden - entstanden und gehoeren damit vor allem in die Zeit vor dem Freskenzyklus in Neapel (1873). Aus 33 noch erhaltenen Bildnissen werden sieben Werkgruppen naher betrachtet. Dabei geht es sowohl um die Gemalde an sich als auch um ihre kunsthistorische Einordnung. Anhand von Vergleichen wird der Einfluss der alteren wie der zeitgenoessischen Kunst untersucht. Deutlich wird, dass es in jeder Bildschoepfung Ziel des Malers war, das Wesen der jeweiligen Persoenlichkeit, das Typische, zu erfassen, womit sich die Bildnismalerei nicht zuletzt als wegweisend fur die spateren Figurenbilder darstellt.
