Monetary Policy, Central Banking and Economic Performance in the Caribbean

Monetary Policy, Central Banking and Economic Performance in the Caribbean

Serick Boyd; Ron Smith

University of the West Indies Press
2011
nidottu
Despite their common British colonial heritage, the twelve Caribbean economies examined in this book exhibit a wide variety of monetary regimes. These include a currency union, currency board, and fixed and floating exchange rate regimes which allow for a range of rules and discretionary-based monetary policies. Derick Boyd and Ron Smith trace the historical origins and evolution of this variety of Caribbean institutions and examine the effect of policy regime on economic performance, using theoretical economic analysis and several econometric techniques, which they explain in detail. Their conclusion is that better economic performance has benefited from an embedded tradition of conservative central banking, either hardwired, as in the case of a currency board, or through discretionary policies, a tradition which seems to have been largely eroded in the resource-rich economies.

The Cessna 172 is unquestionably the world's most successful light aircraft. More than 43,000 have been built since 1956, and the type is in service all over the world. For many, it defines the experience of cross-country flying with family and friends. This small volume traces the origins of the Cessna 172 and highlights the features that have made it so successful. Comprehensively illustrated, with many previously unpublished photographs, the book includes a close-up look at an individual aircraft and highlights the differences between the many Cessna 172 and 175 variants. It discusses flying and owning the type and illustrates how the instrument panel layout, flight controls and instruments have evolved during the lengthy production run. The book finishes with a fascinating look at a number of special variants and uses, including tailwheel and STOL conversions, re-engined examples, ski and seaplane operation, banner towing and skywriting.

The Depths of Courage: American Submariners at War with Japan, 1941-1945
Chosen by WWII History magazine as one of the Best Books of the Year. In the dark days after Pearl Harbor, the small, illequipped arm of the Navy known as Submarine Force would stand between the shattered U.S. Pacific Fleet and the might of the Japanese Navy. Unfortunately, the spirit and courage of the Submarine Force is being forgotten as the veterans of that force pass into history. To preserve their heroic tales of war beneath the sea, critically acclaimed author and military historian Flint Whitlock, in collaboration with decorated World War II submarine veteran Ron Smith, set out on a journey of more than two years to interview submariners and to record their accounts before the memories of their endeavors are lost forever. These are their stories.

Moon Road

From poems of memory and family through its extraordinary voyaging sequences ""Via Appia"" and ""To Ithaca,"" Ron Smith's Moon Road embodies the experiences and some of the more elusive lessons of marriage, fatherhood, teaching, sports, and travel. Domestic poems give way to poems of pilgrimage and witness, to poems of literary homage and metaphysical questioning. A mind nurtured in the mid-twentieth-century Deep South drifts north and west and finally abroad, and sometimes into visionary, mysterious pasts. With skeptical reverence, the poems hunger for and dramatize a search for immanence and transcendence. Many poems examine the fear of meaninglessness, the griefs of separation and alienation, and the limits as well as the powers of language.
