Leopards Can Change Their Spots is a gentle and thoughtful picture book about friendship, kindness, and learning to take responsibility for how our actions affect others. Lenny the leopard loves wearing bright and unusual suits to stand out and have fun, but he doesn't understand why the other animals don't want to be his friend. As Lenny goes about his day, he slowly discovers that it's not how colourful you look on the outside that matters most, but how you treat others on the inside. With the help of his friends, Lenny begins to see that words and actions can hurt, even when we don't mean them to. By learning to listen, reflect, and change his behaviour, Lenny realises that everyone can grow - and that true friendship comes from kindness, empathy, and respect. Warmly illustrated and written with young children in mind, Leopards Can Change Their Spots encourages conversations about behaviour, feelings, and making better choices, making it ideal for shared reading at home, in nurseries, and in early years classrooms.

In 1893 Claude Monet, a keen gardener, bought a plot of land next to his house in Giverny, where he wanted to create a water garden ‘both for the pleasure of the eye and for the purpose of having subjects to paint’. He filled the pond with water lilies and built a bridge at one end, inspired by examples he had seen in Japanese prints. This water garden became the focus of Monet’s later career and the subject of some 250 paintings. Alongside an overview of the painter’s life, Ross King considers the profound impact of Japanese art on Monet’s working practice, the historical events of the time, the artist’s fascination with painting bridges, and the personal tragedy that led to his ultimate desire to capture and immortalise on canvas a succession of ever-changing moments in his garden.Published by National Gallery Global/Distributed by Yale University Press
V 753 g. do n. e. Romul - syn boga vojny Marsa, vskormlennyj volchitsej - podnjalsja na kholm Palatin i plugom ochertil zemlju vokrug sebja. Drevnie bogi poslali Romulu i Remu svoe predznamenovanie, i ono privedet k zhestokomu bratoubijstvu. Takova legenda ob osnovanii Rima. Novyj gorod obedinil vnutri svoikh sten raznosherstnoe naselenie - rabov i begletsov, razbojnikov i nevolnits, - i imenno on stanet istochnikom samoj moguschestvennoj sily, kakuju tolko znal Drevnij mir. Vydajuschijsja istorik iskusstva Ross King issleduet istoki velichija Drevnego Rima, zakat i krakh etogo udivitelnogo gosudarstva, jarkoe raznoobrazie srednevekovykh italjanskikh gorodov, fenomen Renessansa, tragicheskuju sudbu Italii pri fashizme i poslevoennuju epokhu. V svoem uvlekatelnom povestvovanii King okhvatyvaet 3000-letnjuju istoriju Italii: ee triumfy i porazhenija, nepovtorimoe iskusstvo i arkhitekturu, uchast velikikh geniev i velikikh greshnikov. "Posle nochi prikhodit rassvet, ved vsja istorija Italii - pro zhiznestojkost i vozrozhdenie" (Ross King).
The calendar. The Senate. The university. The piano, the heliocentric model, and the pizzeria. It's hard to imagine a world without Italian influence--and easy to assume that inventions like these could only come from a strong, stable peninsula, sure of its place in the world. In this breakneck history, bestselling author Ross King dismantles this assumption, uncovering the story of a land rife with inner uncertainty even as its influence spread. As the Italian tale unfolds, prosperity and power fluctuate like the elevation in the Dolomites. If Rome's seven hills could talk, they might speak of the glorious time of Trajan--or bemoan the era of conquest and the Bubonic Plague that decimated Rome's population. Episodes of wealth like the First Triumvirate and the time of the Medicis are given fresh life alongside descriptions of the Middle Ages, the early days of Venice, the invasion of Napoleon, and the long struggle for unification. Highlighting key events and personalities, King paints a vibrant portrait of a country whose political and cultural legacies enrich our lives today.

Nikogda esche Leonardo ne dovodilos rabotat nad stol monumentalnym zhivopisnym proizvedeniem, ne bylo u nego i opyta raboty v chrezvychajno slozhnoj tekhnike freski. Na fone vojny, politicheskikh intrig i religioznykh potrjasenij, stradaja ot nenadezhnosti sobstvennogo polozhenija i muchitelno perezhivaja proshlye neudachi, Leonardo sozdal shedevr, kotoryj proslavil ego imja v vekakh. Razvenchivaja mnozhestvo mifov, okutyvajuschikh "Tajnuju vecherju" edva li ne s momenta sozdanija, Ross King dokazyvaet, chto istinnaja istorija proslavlennogo tvorenija Leonardo da Vinchi uvlekatelnee ljubogo iz nikh.
K 1914 godu shumnye batalii, oznamenovavshie pojavlenie na svet mjatezhnoj gruppy khudozhnikov-impressionistov, davno stali istoriej, a molodye buntari, ikh sprovotsirovavshie, - te iz nikh, kto esche ne pokinul etot mir, - prevratilis v sedoborodykh patriarkhov frantsuzskoj zhivopisi. Klod Mone, kotoromu ispolnilos 73 goda, obosnovalsja v Zhiverni, gde obustroil svoj personalnyj rajskij sad s rukotvornymi prudami i selektsionnymi lilijami. Frantsuzskie gazety informirovali chitatelej, chto proslavlennyj master udalilsja na pokoj. I vse zhe gazety potoropilis spisyvat Mone so schetov. Vopreki lichnym i mirovym kataklizmam, vopreki nezdorovju, neuverennosti v svoikh silakh i solidnomu vozrastu khudozhnik pristupil k voploscheniju samogo masshtabnogo khudozhestvennogo proekta za vsju svoju artisticheskuju kareru - grandioznogo tsikla pejzazhej s vodjanymi lilijami.
Florentsija epokhi Vozrozhdenija. Eti slova privodjat na pamjat obrazy prekrasnykh tvorenij iskusnykh khudozhnikov i arkhitektorov. No ne menee znachimymi byli svershenija tvortsov v inoj oblasti: florentijskikh okhotnikov za rukopisjami, pistsov, uchenykh i knigotorgovtsev, kotorye smakhnuli pyl vekov s antichnogo znanija, otkryvaja i rasprostranjaja kotoroe, oni tvorili novyj prosveschennyj mir. Imenno v etoj sfere dostig grandioznogo uspekha Vespasiano da Bistichchi - "korol knigotorgovtsev", kotoromu posvjaschena novaja zakhvatyvajuschaja kniga Rossa Kinga, avtora bestsellerov "Leonardo da Vinchi i Tajnaja vecherja", "Mikelandzhelo i Sikstinskaja kapella" i mnogikh drugikh. Manuskriptami, sozdannymi pod rukovodstvom Vespasiano, stremilis ukrasit svoi biblioteki prosveschennye monarkhi i rimskie pontifiki... No krakh grandioznogo predprijatija "korolja knigotorgovtsev" byl predreshen: knigopechatanie sdelalo knigi dostupnymi dlja mnogikh. Dramaticheskie politicheskie i religioznye potrjasenija epokhi, istorija filosofskoj mysli i evropejskij mir perioda grandioznykh i sudbonosnykh peremen predstavleny Rossom Kingom skvoz prizmu biografii ekstraordinarnogo cheloveka, nespravedlivo zabytogo istoriej, Vespasiano da Bistichchi - podlinnogo titana Vozrozhdenija.

The Renaissance in Florence conjures images of beautiful frescoes and elegant buildings--the dazzling handiwork of the city's skilled artists and architects. But equally important for the centuries to follow were geniuses of a different sort: Florence's manuscript hunters, scribes, scholars, and booksellers, who blew the dust off a thousand years of history and, through the discovery and diffusion of ancient knowledge, imagined a new and enlightened world. At the heart of this activity, which bestselling author Ross King relates in his exhilarating new book, was a remarkable man: Vespasiano da Bisticci. Born in 1422, he became what a friend called "the king of the world's booksellers." At a time when all books were made by hand, over four decades Vespasiano produced and sold many hundreds of volumes from his bookshop, which also became a gathering spot for debate and discussion. Besides repositories of ancient wisdom by the likes of Plato, Aristotle, and Quintilian, his books were works of art in their own right, copied by talented scribes and illuminated by the finest miniaturists. His clients included a roll-call of popes, kings, and princes across Europe who wished to burnish their reputations by founding magnificent libraries.Vespasiano reached the summit of his powers as Europe's most prolific merchant of knowledge when a new invention appeared: the printed book. By 1480, the king of the world's booksellers was swept away by this epic technological disruption, whereby cheaply produced books reached readers who never could have afforded one of Vespasiano's elegant manuscripts.A thrilling chronicle of intellectual ferment set against the dramatic political and religious turmoil of the era, Ross King's brilliant The Bookseller of Florence is also an ode to books and bookmaking that charts the world-changing shift from script to print through the life of an extraordinary man long lost to history--one of the true titans of the Renaissance.
