For a number of years, Rubin Battino has been presenting professional workshops on the art of very brief therapy. He defines very brief therapy as seeing clients only once or twice, with any additional sessions being the client's choice. In his new book, When All Else Fails: Some New and Some Old Tools for Doing Brief Therapy, the emphasis is on the many approaches that can be used as rapid and effective methods for working with clients. The author feels that the essence of brief therapy is the expectation of the therapist (which is transmitted to the client one way or another) that only a few sessions will be needed to resolve realistically and satisfactorily the client's concerns. The book addresses both new and old ways of doing brief therapy. Some of the new ways include: expectation; the power of pauses; chatting as therapy; poetry; healing language; touch; laughter and others. Some of the old ways include: Gestalt therapy; Bioenergetic Analysis; Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP); Encounter Groups & Group Therapy; and Ideomotor Signalling; Psychodrama; Narrative Therapy, Provocative Therpy and Hypnosis. The last is an important part, both directly or indirectly, of all of the methods discussed. Whenever a client 'goes inside' during a session, they are effectively in a trance state. A therapist who can choose among a variety of brief therapy techniques is more than likely to be in greater command of the therapeutic process as he or she will be able to choose exactly those techniques that fit their client's situation and their personality. This book offers the professional myriad options that are open to them for a better, more well-rounded practice.

This unique, practical and accessible healing manual explores the most powerful methods of healing, primarily focusing on guided imagery, a healing technique that fully exploits the connection between mind and body. In addition, it encourages a multi-modal approach to healing through an analysis of other techniques, including psychotherapy-based methods and alternative therapies. It presents a breakdown of published guided imagery scripts, while investigating the most effective methods in inducing a state of relaxation. Also included in this volume is an invaluable section on preparing patients for surgery, as well as chapters on Nutrition and Healing, by nutrition expert A. Ira Fritz PhD, and a chapter on Native American Healing Traditions, by healer Helena Sheehan PhD.

This immensely powerful and practical book is about utilising the power of expectation in working with clients. It is the author's contention that creating an environment where the client expects to change is the foundation of doing effective very brief therapy. His own private practice is one where he rarely sees clients more than one or two times. Clients know in advance that this is the way that he works, and so their expectation is that during this session they are going to get down to the hard stuff, and resolve their concerns insofar as it is possible. This means working as if each session were the last one. This book is about all of the things that are designed to work in a single-session mode. This is not to say that some clients will need many more sessions but creating the expectation that each session will be the last creates an impetus towards change that is vital in the therapeutic process. After presenting the basic outline of this approach, the book details (chapter by chapter) the specific approaches that the author finds most useful in his work. These include Ericksonian hypnosis and psychotherapy, solution-focused brief therapy, reframing, Rossi's fail-safe methods, and ideomotor signalling. In addition, metaphor, guided metaphor, and narrative therapy are utilized, as well as many other methods. Battino has put in one place a collection of rapid and effective approaches to doing therapy. The emphasis is on the expectation of both the client and the therapist that rapid, lasting change is possible.

The aim of this book is to develop the concepts and relations pertinent to the solution of many thermodynamic problems encountered in multi-phase, multi-component systems. In doing so, it emphasizes a comprehension and development of general expressions for solving such problems, rather than ready-made equations for particular applications. Throughout the book, the methods of Gibbs are used with emphasis on the chemical potential. Many topics omitted in more elementary texts are amply discussed defining the state of a thermodynamic system, particularly the indifferent systems; the use of the Gibbs-Duhem equation in single-phase and multi-phase component systems; the conditions of stability for single-phase and multi-phase component systems; and the graphical representation of the thermodynamic functions. Special attention is given to reference and standard states. The material is presented in a rigorous and mathematical manner, and SI units are used throughout. A detailed bibliography is also included. Thermodynamics of Chemical Systems is intended for all those concerned with the application of thermodynamics to chemical systems, including biochemists, metallurgists, physicists, and materials scientists as well as chemists. Research workers and graduate students in these areas will find this work to be a valuable textbook and reference book.

Psychiatrist and neurologist, Viktor E. Frankl, was the founder of Logotherapy, the third Viennese school of psychiatry, concerned with helping people find meaning in their lives. "Meaning" is a biography in play form. Using many of his own words, the play focuses on key moments in Frankl's life: it explores his experiences in a Nazi concentration camp, his development of Logotherapy and his insights into the human condition. His book "Man's Search for Meaning" has influenced millions of people worldwide. Richly illustrated with photographs of Frankl's life and times, including both painful images of imprisonment in the camps and joyful family portraits, "Meaning" presents this extraordinary man's life in a dramatic and readable style. It will appeal to those familiar with Frankl's work, and inspire new readers to learn more about this remarkable man and his contribution to the cause of humanity. "'Meaning' brings Frankl to life in full dimension - his spirit, determination, wisdom, and integrity." - Jeffrey K. Zeig PhD, Director, The Milton H. Erickson Foundation.
