Seth Tabor purchases land from Coy Bryant and settles on Big Creek with a view of where the creek joins the Buffalo River. The hickory trees that grow on the bench land prove perfect for his trade of making handles for farm tools. While preparing to cut a tree, he notices something strange going on at the Bryant barn below the bluff. It looks like a meeting that shouldn't be happening. Whatever it is, isn't his business, but when his work is interrupted by two shotgun blasts, he focuses more on the land below. A horseman, who must have been hidden inside the barn, rides away in a hurry, however, Seth is too far away to see his face. He decides to keep his distance when finally, a crowd starts to gather and he watches the town folks put two bodies in the back of a wagon. He turns to his friend Willie Sutton with his secret, but doesn't reveal everything he knows. In trying to find more answers, Seth decides to go to church at Cozy to see if he can hear any scuttlebutt. He is unprepared when he meets the beautiful redhead Melissa Bryant, who he gives his condolences for losing her uncle in the shooting. Melissa captures his heart and their relationship grows, but questions of what he saw that day, and his search for answers continue to haunt Seth. Will he ever know the truth? As grown men and still enslaved, 'the boys', as they are referred to, are contracted to work with a crew surveying the Louisiana purchase. They make the trek to Tennessee where they make friends with some young white men. These relationships reshape Zeek's life forever. Zeek's journey takes him through many changes, but of one he's not sure. Will he ever be a free man? None of the events or names in this story are based on real characters. Zeek's Journey to Freedom is my attempt to tell the story of the early journey of slaves to become free.

When some young men from Wayne County, Tennessee, join a survey crew after the Louisiana Purchase, the job takes them out of the swamps to a flat-top mountain. They call it Big Flat. After the survey is complete, the Tennessee boys return home to talk their families into moving to Arkansas. Their journey and finding their way back to the place they chose to settle, is more difficult than they anticipate and when they finally arrive on the mountain, they are surprised at what they find. After the Civil War, comes reconstruction, and the development of the railroads offer new opportunities. The positive prospect in the area continues to grow as does the community, but not without its hardships. The Sitton family, in 1825, finds the perfect place to settle. On Big Creek. Willie Sitton, born and raised on the creek takes up the family profession of making moonshine. With six stills, he perfects the process of cooking shine. His legacy and reputation with big distilleries lead the way into the 20th century. AUTHOR NOTE Writing a novel that covers a period longer than 100 years is a daunting task. Seventeen-year-old Ed Tice is a gifted church speaker in Wayne County Tennessee. So gifted the churches pay his way to a school in Memphis so he can become a full-fledged preacher. He takes housing with one of the professors and falls in love with the man's daughter, Elizabeth, who finds out Ed has a drinking problem. When he won't comply with her wishes, she goes to his father. Banished from school, losing the love of his life and too ashamed to go home, Ed takes up odd jobs here and there until he lands in Arkansas where he's hired to work in a hardware store. The store owner, Mr. Carr, is a staunch Christian and after hearing Ed's story he wants to help him with his problem. When Ed discovers a number of people he knows live in Big Flat, Arkansas, he realizes to become the Godly man he wants to be, he has to pay back the churches for his failed education and move to Big Flat. His main goal is to convert bootlegger Willy Sitton to Christianity. In the process of facing off with Willy, Ed tries, though still fighting his own demon's, to win Elizabeth's heart back. Will he earn the love and trust of the woman who holds his heart, overcome his craving of the devil's brew, succeed with saving Willy and live happily ever after?
