Controlled Thermonuclear Reactions: An Introduction To Theory And Experiment by Samuel Glasstone is a comprehensive guide to the theory and experimentation of thermonuclear reactions. The book covers the basic principles of nuclear physics, including fusion, fission, and the properties of matter and energy. It also examines the various types of fusion reactions, such as magnetic confinement, inertial confinement, and laser fusion. The book provides a detailed analysis of the experimental techniques used to study thermonuclear reactions, including the use of plasma diagnostics, magnetic confinement devices, and laser systems. It also explores the challenges and limitations of these experimental methods.Controlled Thermonuclear Reactions is written in a clear and concise manner, making it accessible to both students and professionals in the field of nuclear physics. The book includes numerous diagrams and illustrations to help readers understand the complex concepts and theories presented.Overall, Controlled Thermonuclear Reactions is an essential resource for anyone interested in the theory and experimentation of thermonuclear reactions, including researchers, engineers, and students in the field of nuclear physics. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

Dr. Samuel Glasstone, the senior author of the previous editions of this book, was anxious to live until his ninetieth birthday, but passed away in 1986, a few months short of this milestone. I am grateful for the many years of stimulation received during our association, and in preparing this edition have attempted to maintain his approach. Previous editions of this book were intended to serve as a text for students and a reference for practicing engineers. Emphasis was given to the broad perspective, particularly for topics important to reactor design and oper ation, with basic coverage provided in such supporting areas as neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, and materials. This, the Fourth Edition, was prepared with these same general objectives in mind. However, during the past three decades, the nuclear industry and university educational programs have matured considerably, presenting some challenges in meeting the objec tives of this book. Nuclear power reactors have become much more complex, with an ac companying growth in supporting technology. University programs now offer separate courses covering such basic topics as reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, and materials. Finally, the general availability of inexpensive xiii xiv Preface powerful micro- and minicomputers has transformed design and analysis procedures so that sophisticated methods are now commonly used instead of earlier, more approximate approaches.

The Effects of Nuclear Weapons is a comprehensive guide that explores the various consequences of nuclear weapons detonation, written by Samuel Glasstone. The book is divided into several sections, each of which delves into a different aspect of nuclear weapons and their effects, including the physics of nuclear explosions, the thermal and blast effects of nuclear detonation, radiation and fallout, and the potential long-term effects on the environment and human health. The book provides detailed descriptions of the various types of nuclear weapons and their destructive capabilities, including the differences between fission and fusion bombs, and the effects of different yields and delivery methods. It also examines the various factors that can affect the outcome of a nuclear detonation, such as the altitude of the explosion, the type of terrain and structures in the target area, and the weather conditions at the time of the detonation. The Effects of Nuclear Weapons also discusses the potential political and social implications of nuclear weapons use, including the impact on international relations, the ethics of nuclear warfare, and the potential for nuclear proliferation. The book includes numerous diagrams, illustrations, and photographs to help readers understand the complex scientific concepts and technical details involved in nuclear weapons detonation.Overall, The Effects of Nuclear Weapons is a comprehensive and informative guide that provides a detailed examination of the various consequences of nuclear weapons use. It is an essential resource for anyone interested in the science, history, and politics of nuclear weapons, and their potential impact on the world. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. G. PLACZEK, L. SZILARD, E. TELLER, A. M. WEINBilJRG, J. A. WHEELER, E. P. WIGNER und G. YOUNG erwahnt werden.
