Interwoven Human and More-than-Human Worlds
This book is an urgent invitation, provocation and proposal to devise possible theories, methods, and practices of eco-entangled, cobwebbed, symbiotic, and chaotic forms of existence between human and more-than-human species. Despite the production of several policies, coalitions, and doctrines, the root causes of environmental violence, such as the reckless expansion of cities, roads, highways, shopping complexes, and residential areas, remain unaddressed. This book unpacks the dangers of ‘eco-epistemic ambivalences’ and eco-suicidal ‘kamikaze mindsets’ on the one hand, and to realize our response-abilities towards this planet's natural environment and biodiversity through multiple forms of rhizomatic turns and sub-turns. It thereby presents various rhizomatic methods that can be practiced in everyday life to interweave human and more-than-human knowledge systems. The book is will be of interest for postgraduate students, early-career researchers, and experience academics engaged in the fields of environmental humanities, cultural studies, urban studies, environmental management, geography, sociology, anthropology, history, critical waste studies, climate change, posthumanities, climate politics, environmentalism, public humanities, critical diversity literacy, teaching and learning methods, and environmental research methods.

«Tapping into our own shadows, waste becomes a source of self-knowledge for a species at risk of self-annihilation. This book is a must read to raise consciousness in the era of the Anthropocene. Inspiring. Timely. Original.» (Francesca Ferrando, author of The Art of Being Posthuman) «In this provocative and socially engaged book, garbage becomes a kaleidoscope through which Sayan Dey invites us to view contemporary Indian society. Through the fertile concept of "garbocracy," the author unveils the embodiment of power and oppression within the organization of space, communities, and knowledge. The book emphasizes the need to liberate ourselves not only from the garbage dumped everywhere but also from the logic that organizes the division between purity and dirt, waste and worth.» (Marco Armiero, ICREA Research Professor, Autonomous University of Barcelona, author of Wasteocene: Stories from the Global Dump) The book titled Garbocracy: Towards a Great Human Collapse engages with how the accumulation and disposal of garbage in India is motivated by diverse social, cultural, political, economic, communal, caste, religious and various other factors. The disgusting experiences generated by the sight and the stink of garbage is not only physical in nature, but psychological, neurological, structural, institutional, tangible and intangible in nature. To elaborate further, on the one side the improper disposal of garbage in the public places generate varied health issues and on the other hand it impacts the social, cultural, political, and economic state of individuals and communities. With respect to these perspectives, the aim of this book is to unfold how the various socio-politically motivated patterns and intensions of disposing garbage in India, gradually convert the heaps of garbage into authoritative entities that govern the habitual thinking, behaving and acting patterns of the humans.

This book studies the importance of adopting Green Academia as a systemic long-term counter-intervention strategy against any form of impending pandemics in the post-COVID era and beyond. It argues that anti-nature and capitalistic knowledge systems have contributed to the evolution and growth of COVID-19 across the globe and emphasizes the merits of reinstating nature-based and environment-friendly pedagogical and curricular infrastructures in mainstream educational institutions. The volume also explores possible ways of weaving ecology and the environment as a habitual practice of teaching and learning in an intersectional manner with Science and Technology Studies. With detailed case studies of the green schools in Bhutan and similar practices in India, Kenya, and New Zealand, the book argues for different forms of eco-friendly education systems and the possibilities of expanding these local practices to a global stage.Part of the Academics, Politics and Society in the Post-COVID World series, this book will be an essential read for scholars and researchers of sociology, cultural studies, decolonial studies, education, ecology, public policy social anthropology, sustainable development, sociology of education, and political sociology.
Performing Memories and Weaving Archives:
This book engages with how the Siddis in Gujarat and the South African Indians in South Africa perform different forms of creolized socio-cultural practices in the contemporary era. Since the precolonial times, India and South Africa have developed commercial relations through sharing clothing materials, minerals, precious stones, and spices. Besides exchanging physical objects, varieties of cultures, traditions, and rituals were also exchanged between these countries. With the emergence of colonization in both these countries as Africans were brought to India as slaves and Indians were taken to South Africa as indentured laborers, a lot of objects like musical instruments, plant seeds, cooking utensils, and hand-woven clothes were carried across the Indian Ocean as cultural memories. With the passage of time, the cultural practices of the Indian Diaspora and African Diaspora got intermixed with the native local cultures of South Africa and India, respectively, and gave birth to porous, fluid, multi-rooted, and creolized cultural practices. This book brings forth some of the creolized culinary, spiritual, and musical practices of these communities, and how these performances can expand the archives of creolized cultural practices of Diaspora communities in the Indian Ocean World.
