The Mackinac Bridge, "Guardian of the Straits", was constructed simply to connect the Upper Peninsula and Lower Peninsula. To ease the flow of traffic and serve as a reference, a lighthouse, for Great Lakes vessels traveling through the Straits of Mackinac.In this Great Lakes poetic short story, it becomes evident that the structure forged from concrete and steel has a personality softer side. This poetic short story was originally published in Great Lakes Whisper, A Collection of "Great Lakes Poetic Short Stories". This version introduces the character Mac as the personality of the Mackinac Bridge.

An author makes his annual journey north to spend the winter months in the Straits of Mackinac. He has rented the same cabin for twenty five years solely to concentrate on his writing. The author has been struggling lately and grows concerned that his work has lost purpose. An unexpected knock on the door and a visit from a stranger, helps him better understand the purpose of his writing.

After a long cold winter, which is common across northern Michigan, spring is a welcome time of year. Spring is a transition period, from months of snowblowing the driveway and blinding lake effect snow off Lake Michigan, to warmer days and melting snow. It is a time to get outdoors, smell the fresh cool snow melt air and soak up the sun. Most importantly, it is a time to begin making maple syrup.
