Most maintenance practitioners have become familiar with machine condition monitoring through the use of portable systems such as vibration, oil analysis, thermography. These portable systems are typically utilized as part of predictive maintenance program that is expensive and time consuming. With recent advances in the field of lubricant condition monitoring utilize the concept of real time condition monitoring with the help of expert systems that is highlighted through a case study. The present work describes the development of an expert system that can be used to determine the condition of lubricating oil in circulation in a centralized lubrication system attributed for lubricating antifriction bearings. It begins with basic concepts of oil analysis, lubrication, with analysis of bearings and finally the development of an expert system pertinent to wear paricle analysis. The lubricant contaminant monitoring through advanced diagnostic techniques for critical equipment is a very powerful maintenance tool in any production plant. It predicts the condition of the oil as well as the machine in advance failure mode.

Coefficient of friction and wear rate of different austenitic steel materials are investigated and compared. Experiments are conducted on a pin/ball-on-disk apparatus on different types of ball materials such as austenitic stainless steel SS304 and austenitic stainless steel SS316 sliding against EN-31 disk. The experiments are performed on a group of specimens for duration of 5 min for various loads of 10,15 and 20 N in magnitude with sliding velocity of 1,1.5,2 m/s. The results show that the frictional force varies with duration of rubbing, normal load and sliding velocity. In general, frictional force increases for a certain duration of rubbing and after that it remains constant for the rest of the experimental time. The results obtained reveal that the frictional force increases with the increase in normal load for all the tested materials. It is also found that frictional force increases with the increase in sliding velocity for all the materials investigated. For the same operating condition, the magnitudes of the frictional force and wear rate are different for different materials depending on normal load and sliding velocity.

The content of the book is as follows: Coating and Different Types of Deposition/Coating Techniques. Compressed summary about the electrodeposition process with advantages, disadvantages and their applications over other coating methods with diagram. Also provide a short explanation on pulsed electrodeposition, electrocodeposition, different baths used for nickel electroplating. Brief literature reviews on pure Ni and Ni-Al composite coatings were arranged in chapter 2. A detailed experimental investigation and about different characterization methods were provided in chapter 3. In chapter 4 a discussion about the results obtained from the experiment. In chapter 5 conclusions of the present work were reported and provided with future work. References were provided in the last chapter.
