Using Operation-Based Multi-Queue SBC Process Algebra as a Metamodel for UML: Toward a Unified View of the System
Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a general modeling language for model-driven (software) engineering (MDE) applications. The UML specification defines a set of language concepts that is used to model the (static) structure and (dynamic) behavior of a system. The UML concepts include (1) an abstract syntax that defines the language concepts and is described by a metamodel, and (2) a concrete syntax, or notation, that defines how the language concepts are represented and is described by a user model.Since UML is a multi-diagram approach, there are always some inconsistencies between different diagrams in the user model. To ensure and check the consistency, a metamodel that defines the abstract syntax of a modeling language needs to provide a unified semantic framework for defining consistency rules to impose constraints on the structure (i.e., objects) or behavior (i.e., activities) constructs. It is hoped that through this unified semantic framework, each diagram in the user model can be projected as a view of the metamodel.Unfortunately, most current UML metamodels do not have the ability to project each diagrams in the user model as a view of the metamodel. In this book, we develop the Operation-Based Multi-Queue Structure-Behavior Coalescence Process Algebra (O-M-SBC-PA) as the metamodel of UML. In O-M-SBC-PA, each diagram in the user model will be projected as a view of the metamodel. Therefore, we claim that O-M-SBC-PA genuinely provides a unified semantic framework to ensure model consistency for UML.

A software system is complex that it comprises multiple views such as strategy/version n, strategy/version n+1, concept, analysis, design, implementation, structure, behavior and input/output data views. Accordingly, a software system is defined as a set of interacting components forming an integrated whole of that system's multiple views.Since structure and behavior views are the two most prominent ones among multiple views, integrating the structure and behavior views is a method for integrating multiple views of a software system. In other words, structure-behavior coalescence (SBC) is a single model (model singularity) approach which results in the integration of multiple views. Therefore, it is concluded that the SBC architecture is so proper to model the multiple views of a software system.In this book, we use the SBC architecture description language (SBC-ADL) to describe and represent the software architecture of the airline reservation system. An architecture description language is a special kind of system model used in defining the architecture of a software system. SBC-ADL uses six fundamental diagrams to formally grasp the essence of a software system and its details at the same time. These diagrams are: a) architecture hierarchy diagram, b) framework diagram, c) component operation diagram, d) component connection diagram, e) structure-behavior coalescence diagram and f) interaction flow diagram.Software architecture is on the rise. Through this book's introduction and elaboration of the software architecture of the airline reservation system (ARS), all readers will clearly understand how SBC-ADL can help architects effectively perform architecting in order to effectively construct the fruitful software architecture.

Do not doubt. This is a book for parents. Parents should first study this book before they teach their kids about the SBC architecture. In this era of knowledge economy, we need a tool to best describe and represent any knowledge system. SBC (abbreviation of structure-behavior coalescence) architecture is such a tool for its capability of integrating the structure and behavior views of a system. The core theme of SBC architecture is: "Systems Architecture = Systems Structure + Systems Behavior". A robot has head, hands, and feet as its structure view. A robot also has writing and walking as its behavior view. SBC architecture describes and represents the robot system through integrating the structure and behavior views of a robot. In such a case, SBC architecture can best describe and represent the knowledge of a robot system. SBC architecture is so powerful in describing and representing any knowledge system. It's never too early to teach kids about the SBC architecture. As parents, we had better keep this advice in our mind.
