A career retrospective on one of the all-time great photographers of both music and black culture, Dennis Morris. When we think of the trailblazing photographer Dennis Morris’s work, music is right there. Morris’s adventures in the 1970s reggae and punk scene laid the groundwork for a six-decade career. It all began with Bob Marley: Morris doorstepped Marley in his early teens while skipping school and went on to capture much of Marley’s tour, which launched his career as a music photographer. He later became the official photographer for the Sex Pistols, and for John Lydon’s next project, Public Image Limited, Morris was art director and designer as well as taking iconic images for the band. He captured the greats of reggae and roots music, from Lee 'Scratch' Perry to Toots and Jimmy Cliff, forming friendships with many of the acts. Morris's documentary and street photography work, with roots in his experiences as a Black teenager in 1970s Britain, bring us visionary projects that explore race, politics and cultural identity. From the miner's strike to squat protests, from civil rights organizations to pop-up studio portraits, his work was a reckoning with his new home, capturing eccentricity and individual spirits with his camera. Edited by Laurie Hurwitz, this book unfolds in two electrifying parts: the first unravels Morris’s lens on race, culture and identity in 1970s Britain, while the second pulses with encounters with music legends like Patti Smith, Gregory Isaacs, The Stone Roses and Radiohead. An illuminating introduction to little-known photographer Issei Suda, who captured the soul of Japan old and new. The work of Issei Suda (1940–2019) is distinct in contemporary avant-garde Japanese photography for its celebration of the beauty of the everyday. His black and white pictures reflect on apparent banality of urban life, capturing ‘the little surprises usually ignored in our world’: the shadow of a figure, the shapes of the street, the expressions on stranger's faces. Suda’s practice revealed the tensions between old and new Japan, juxtaposing the ingrained visual traditions of Japanese culture with the prevailing western vocabulary of fashion, advertising and leisure, as seen through his observant and tender lens.

Life, Death and Everything in Between presents key photographs by Don McCullin. The book aims to be neither a retrospective nor definitive publication, but to present a selection of images valued by McCullin with the benefits of both hindsight and wisdom, encapsulating his prolific, varied and ongoing career. The book opens with McCullin’s documentary photographs made in London in the 1950s, followed by reportage made in conflicts across Europe, Africa, the Middle East and South-East Asia. More recent photographs in the book link the legacy of the Roman Empire in the Mediterranean and the latest, previously unpublished landscapes made near his home in Somerset.

Among the major series reproduced here are Nan Goldin's seminal 1986 photobook The Ballad of Sexual Dependency; Nobuyoshi Araki's Sentimental Journey (1969) and Winter Journey (1989–90), which present the beginning and end of the relationship with his wife Yoko, from their honeymoon to her death; RongRong&inri's tender and poetical Polaroid series Personal Letters (2000); and Leigh Ledare's Double Bind (2010), a complex account of a love triangle between himself, his ex-wife and her new husband. These and the other series in Love Songs together make a portrait of love in all its risk, complexity, sensuality and tenderness. In this paper we develop a new approach for studying overlapping iterated function systems. This approach is inspired by a famous result due to Khintchine from Diophantine approximation which shows that for a family of limsup sets, their Lebesgue measure is determined by the convergence or divergence of naturally occurring volume sums. For many parameterised families of overlapping iterated function systems, we prove that a typical member will exhibit similar Khintchine like behaviour. Families of iterated function systems that our results apply to include those arising from Bernoulli convolutions, the {0, 1, 3} problem, and affine contractions with varying translation parameter. As a by-product of our analysis we obtain new proofs of some well known results due to Solomyak on the absolute continuity of Bernoulli convolutions, and when the attractor in the {0, 1, 3} problem has positive Lebesgue measure.For each t ? [0, 1] we let ?t be the iterated function system given by ?t := ?1(x) = x 2 , ?2(x) = x + 1 2 , ?3(x) = x + t 2 , ?4(x) = x +1+ t 2 .We prove that either ?t contains an exact overlap, or we observe Khintchine like behaviour. Our analysis shows that by studying the metric properties of limsup sets, we can distinguish between the overlapping behaviour of iterated function systems in a way that is not available to us by simply studying properties of self-similar measures.Last of all, we introduce a property of an iterated function system that we call being consistently separated with respect to a measure. We prove that this property implies that the pushforward of the measure is absolutely continuous. We include several explicit examples of consistently separated iterated function systems.
