It was the summer of 1983. Walsall were preparing for yet another season in Division Three when, out of the blue, British Airways got in touch. They were launching an innovative advertising campaign and wanted to feature the team underneath the banner 'They're only 90 minutes away from a place in Europe'. The idea was to show how quickly European cities could be reached from Birmingham Airport, while gently mocking the West Midlands' least successful football club. As the season got underway, Walsall were thrashed 8-1 by Bolton Wanderers and 6-3 by Oxford United. Saddlers fans feared the worst, while the marketing people at the airline no doubt felt vindicated in their judgement of the club. But this Walsall team were about to have the last laugh. They embarked on a League Cup campaign which saw them defeat Arsenal, stun Liverpool and come closer to reaching Europe than anyone would have dared imagine. 90 Minutes from Europe tells the story of Walsall's greatest cup run; an adventure so implausible that you just couldn't make it up.

If Only: An Alternative History of the Beautiful Game is a fiercely original counterfactual history of football. It is often tempting to believe in the grand sweep of history; to conclude that the triumphs of football's greatest teams were simply inevitable. The truth, however, is that history can turn on what appear, at first glance, to be infinitesimally small events. Behind all those triumphs lie the countless disappointments of teams that were denied glory by a cruel bounce, the width of a crossbar or a dubious refereeing decision. Challenging the perception that the outcome of great clashes could never have been any different to what they were, If Only reflects on what our football history could have been, what it might have been and, in some cases, what it probably should have been. Boldly turning football history on its head, If Only imagines a world in which Scotland win the first-ever World Cup, Derby County are champions of Europe and 1966 isn't the only year that England win anything.

Based on thorough ethnographic fieldwork in a refugee camp in Tanzania this book provides a rich account of the benevolent “disciplining mechanisms” of humanitarian agencies, led by the UNHCR, and of the situated, dynamic, indeterminate, and fluid nature of identity (re)construction in the camp. While the refugees are expected to behave as innocent, helpless victims, the question of victimhood among Burundian Hutu is increasingly challenged, following the 1993 massacres in Burundi and the Rwandan genocide. The book explores how different groups within the camp apply different strategies to cope with these issues and how the question of innocence and victimhood is itself imbued with ambiguity, as young men struggle to recuperate their masculinity and their political subjectivity.
