Die Titel-Geschichte "In the Abyss (In der Tiefe)" stammt vom englischen Schriftsteller H. G. Wells. Sie beschreibt eine Reise des Forschers Elstead zum Meeresgrund. Dieser hat einen Apparat erfunden, mit dem eine Person in gro e Tiefen vordringen und das Leben auf dem Meeresgrund beobachten kann. Es handelt sich um eine Stahlkugel mit einem Durchmesser von etwa neun Fu , die einem immensen Druck standhalten soll. Gewichte, die mit einem Kabel an der Kugel befestigt sind, bringen sie auf den Meeresgrund. Der Forscher kann seine Beobachtungen durch das Fenster in der Kugel machen, wobei der Sauerstoff im Inneren durch einen fiktiven "Myers-Apparat" ersetzt wird. Ein Mechanismus schneidet das Kabel nach einer bestimmten Zeit durch, und der Auftrieb der Kugel bringt sie wieder an die Oberfl che. Die Kugel kehrt nicht planm ig zur ck.
