Steve Case, New York Times bestselling author of The Third Wave and cofounder of America Online shows how entrepreneurs across the country are building groundbreaking companies, renewing communities, and creating new jobs—reimagining the American landscape “and [giving] us hope for America’s future” (Ken Burns). In 2014, Steve Case launched Revolution’s Rise of the Rest, an initiative to accelerate the growth of tech startups across the country. Rise of the Rest is based on a simple idea: cities can be renewed and rise again if they develop a vibrant startup culture. A visionary entrepreneur himself, Case believes that great entrepreneurs can be found anywhere, and can thrive with the proper support and investment. In fact, they’re key to the American DNA. After all, America itself was a startup. It struggled to get going and almost didn’t make it. Today it’s the leader of the free world, in part because it has the world’s largest economy—a testament to several generations of pioneering entrepreneurs. But America needs help keeping its promises, as it is harder today for innovators who live outside the major tech hubs. For most of the past decade, seventy-five percent of venture capital has gone to just three states—California, New York, and Massachusetts—while the forty-seven states making up the rest of the country have been forced to share the remaining twenty-five percent. And it’s even harder for some people no matter where they live. Less than ten percent of venture capital currently goes to female founders, and less than one percent to Black founders. Since new companies—startups—are responsible for net new job creation, it is essential that entrepreneurs everywhere have the opportunity to start and scale companies. Rise of the Rest is about leveling the playing field for everybody, and in the process creating opportunity and jobs for the people and places that have been left behind. This book tells that story and provides a hopeful perspective on the future of America. In The Rise of the Rest: How Entrepreneurs in Surprising Places are Building the New American Dream, Case takes readers on an exhilarating journey into the startup communities that are transforming cities nationwide. Rise of the Rest’s signature road trips, on a big red tour bus, have created significant local and national buzz and spotlighted communities large and small that have committed to a new tech-enabled future. Along the way, Case introduces readers to dozens of entrepreneurs whose inspirational stories of struggle and achievement match the most iconic examples of American invention. To date, Case has traveled to forty-three cities on his Rise of the Rest bus tour and has been featured on 60 Minutes, and in The New York Times, USA TODAY, Fast Company, and The Wall Street Journal. With dedicated venture funds, backed by an iconic group of investors, executives, and entrepreneurs including Jeff Bezos, Eric Schmidt, Meg Whitman, John Doerr, Sara Blakely, and Ray Dalio, Rise of the Rest also invests in the most promising high-growth startups located anywhere in the US outside of Silicon Valley, New York City, and Boston. The fund has invested in more than 175 companies across more than eighty cities, including: Phoenix, Chattanooga, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Louisville, Baltimore, Columbus, St. Louis, Green Bay, Madison, Buffalo, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Cincinnati, Miami, Dallas, Salt Lake City, Omaha, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Nashville, Indianapolis, New Orleans, and dozens of others.
The Psalms are not fluffy poetry read by a Shakespearean actor in tights and a puffy shirt.Picture David as the old bluesman in a smokey New Orleans bar. A whiskey and cigar beside him as he makes his instrument weep. Picture David in the dark eyeliner screaming out emo lyrics. Picture David on the back of a flatbed truck stage in the county fair parking lot. Some are from a dancer so filled with joy he can't help but move his feet. Some are from a man who screwed up so badly he's kneeling by the dumpster in the pouring rain, screaming until his throat is raw. Some are from the warrior praying before the battle, unsure if he will see the sunrise.Through a Psalm Briefly aims to take the book of Psalms off the pulpit and put it in the glove compartment, in the backpack, and in the hands of those who need to hear the words in a way they haven't before. These new interpretations of centuries-old lyrics are meant to be sung, danced, painted, played, and most of all...heard. Are you listening?Use the book as a coaster for your coffee mug. Crease the cover. Dog ear the pages. Use these psalms as a starting point for your prayers or as a way to ask God to grant you a quiet night and a peaceful end to a busy day.The stargazer, poet, warrior, dancer, adulterer, and king is just waiting to sing you a song.

You know that perfect feeling? That Life-Is-Good moment on the open highway with the windows down and the radio up, when the perfect song comes on, and you sing along with carefree, top of your lungs abandon? When joy and contentment and life well up from somewhere deep in your soul? What if you could live that way? A seventeenth-century monk named Brother Lawrence figured out how, and wrote about it in the devotional classic, The Practice of the Presence of God. He found a way to connect with God moment by moment, to experience the joy of his divine presence every minute of every day--whether during deep, contemplative prayer or while washing a sink full of dishes. In God Is Here, Steve Case unearths that seventeenth-century wisdom and remixes it into a twenty-first-century guide to everyday life. With modern, thought-provoking essays drawn from Brother Lawrence's original writings, God Is Here shows you how to connect with a God who's always available. God is here. Connect.

You are allowed to laugh.Too often our faith is like wearing a T-shirt that's two sizes too small. We keep trying to pull it and tug it and all the while it feels like we are slowly suffocating. You are allowed to laugh. The finger pointers and the self-appointed judges of what's appropriate and what isn't sit in the back row and scowl. They sing "Joy to the World" as if it were a funeral dirge. They say, "Stop that laughing. You are in CHURCH "You are allowed to laugh.Jesus did. He must have. How could any human being (or divine being) made of love and joy spend all his life being a scowler and fun-spoiler?Most people don't know, just prior to his career as an itinerant minister Jesus took a shot a sketch comedy. Long before Abbot and Costello or the Pythons or any of those people on Saturday Night Live--there was Scott and Jesus, traveling around Jerusalem playing wedding receptions and open-mic nights. (Well there was no "mics" but you get the idea.)So what if it didn't last? Jesus and Scott took a shot. Now Jesus has moved on and we must take a look at the bits Scott saved so that some day you could hold this book. Someday in the midst of all the arguments...you could laugh.Laugh. God is not judging you. God loves you. Sit back. Relax. Oh, and it's probably best not to drink coffee sitting across from someone you love while reading this book--just fair warning.Oh, and did we mention? It's okay to laugh.
Our innovation economy is broken. But there's good news: The ideas that will solve our problems are hiding in plain sight. While big companies in the American economy have never been more successful, entrepreneurial activity is near a 30-year low. More businesses are dying than starting every day. Investors continue to dump billions of dollars into photo-sharing apps and food-delivery services, solving problems for only a wealthy sliver of the world's population, while challenges in health, food security, and education grow more serious. In The Innovation Blind Spot, entrepreneur and venture capitalist Ross Baird argues that the innovations that truly matter don't see the light of day—for reasons entirely of our own making. A handful of people in a handful of cities are deciding, behind closed doors, which entrepreneurs get a shot to succeed. And most investors are what Baird calls "two-pocket thinkers"—artificially separating their charitable work from their day job of making a profit. The resulting system creates rising income inequality, stifled entrepreneurial ambition, social distrust, and political uncertainty. Our innovation problem makes all our other problems harder to solve. In this book, Baird demonstrates how and where to find better ideas by lifting up people, places, and industries that are often overlooked. What's more, Baird ultimately outlines how to create long-term success through "one-pocket thinking"—eliminating the blind spot that separates "what we do for a living" and "what we really care about."
If you believe the Book of Revelation is a detailed and accurate account of the End of Days and how God will choose the righteous and leave the rest behind and anyone who makes fun of this sacred work is committing blasphemy...buy this book anyway. You're in as much trouble just for reading the book description as I am for writing the book.If you are a fan of that author who is famous for his work about green holiday haters and felines wearing head apparel...you will enjoy this book. If you are one of those rare individuals who understands that religion is sometimes just flat out ridiculous...salvation lies within.
Proposing an entirely new governance model to unleash innovation throughout local governmentAt a time when trust is dropping precipitously and American government at the national level has fallen into a state of long-term, partisan-based gridlock, local government can still be effective—indeed more effective and even more responsive to the needs of its citizens. Based on decades of direct experience and years studying successful models around the world, the authors of this intriguing book propose a new operating system (O/S) for cities. Former mayor and Harvard professor Stephen Goldsmith and New York University professor Neil Kleiman suggest building on the giant leaps that have been made in technology, social engagement, and big data.Calling their approach “distributed governance,” Goldsmith and Kleiman offer a model that allows public officials to mobilize new resources, surface ideas from unconventional sources, and arm employees with the information they need to become pre-emptive problem solvers. This book highlights lessons from the many innovations taking place in today's cities to show how a new O/S can create systemic transformation. For students of government, A New City O/S: The Power of Distributed Governance presents a groundbreaking strategy for rethinking the governance of cities, marking an important evolution of the current bureaucratic authority-based model dating from the 1920s. More important, the book is designed for practitioners, starting with public-sector executives, managers, and frontline workers. By weaving real-life examples into a coherent model, the authors have created a step-by-step guide for all those who would put the needs of citizens front and center. Nothing will do more to restore trust in government than solutions that work. A New City O/S: The Power of Distributed Governance puts those solutions within reach of those public officials responsible for their delivery.
The #1 New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller from Steve Case--the co-founder of AOL--presents "a compelling roadmap for the future...that can help us make sense of the technological changes reshaping our economy and the world. A fascinating read" (Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO and founder of LeanIn.org). Steve Case--a pioneer who made the Internet part of everyday life--was on the leading edge of a revolution in 1985 when he co-founded AOL, the first Internet company to go public and the most successful business of the 1990s. Back then Case was an entrepreneur in an industry that hadn't really been invented yet, but he had a sense how dramatically the Internet would transform business and society. In The Third Wave, he uses his insights garnered from nearly four decades of working as an innovator, investor, and businessman to argue the importance of entrepreneurship and to chart a path for future innovators. We are entering, as Case explains, the "Third Wave" of the Internet. The first wave saw AOL and other companies lay the foundation for consumers to connect to the Internet. The second wave saw companies like Google and Facebook build on top of the Internet to create search and social networking capabilities, while apps like Snapchat and Instagram leveraged the smartphone revolution. Now, Case argues, we're entering the Third Wave: a period in which entrepreneurs will vastly transform major "real world" sectors such as health, education, transportation, energy, and food--and in the process change the way we live our daily lives. Part memoir, part manifesto, and part playbook for the future, The Third Wave explains the ways in which newly emerging technology companies will have to rethink their relationships with customers, with competitors, and with governments; and offers advice for how entrepreneurs can make winning business decisions and strategies--and how all of us can make sense of this ever-changing digital age.

Sturminster Newton, known to the locals as 'Stur', is a traditional market town situated at the heart of Dorset's rural Blackmore Vale. It grew up on the banks of the River Stour to serve the agricultural community of the surrounding area and until recent years was famous for its livestock market and Milk Factory. It is also celebrated for its literary connections - the novelist Thomas Hardy and the dialect poets William Barnes and Robert Young all lived there. Join Roger Guttridge and Steve Case on this photographic journey through this beautiful part of Dorset. Using nearly 200 full colour images, they show just how Sturminster Newton has changed over time. It is essential reading for anyone who knows and loves the area, and is an important and intriguing insight into a typical English town.
