Deciding Factors in British Politics

First published in 1992, Deciding Factors in British Politics is an invaluable work that introduces students to the decision-making process in British politics. The book combines detailed case studies with a comprehensive and approachable review of the key theoretical perspectives on how decisions are made. The case studies selected cover a wide range of issues and illustrate many facets of British political life – AIDS policy, the Falklands war, the nuclear power programme, the reform of the Civil Service, the introduction of trade union legislation, and the decision to adopt the Trident missile. These case studies are presented in the context of a thorough review of differing theoretical perspectives on decision-making, encouraging readers to think analytically about the processes of policymaking and to test their analyses against the known details of actual decisions. Finally, the theory and the case-study material are synthesized to provide a rich and complete understanding of the British political process.

On 12 August 1915 the 1/5th Battalion Norfolks advanced on Kuchuk Anafarta Ova on the Suvla Plain at Gallipoli. They never returned. An official report stated they had been ‘lost to sight and sound’. Using previously unseen records, photographs, diaries, accounts and letters, Steve Smith has conducted the first thorough investigation into what truly happened at Kuchuk Anafarta Ova on 12 August 1915. His research has led him to Turkish archives, where he has uncovered accounts of troops who faced the advancing 1/5th Battalion—accounts that debunk the myth of a mass slaughter in cold blood. To substantiate the written sources, Smith has combed the battlefield on foot, charting the course of the day’s events in a series of new maps. The Norfolks at Gallipoli 12 August 1915: Truth and Myth is the definitive account of what became of the 16 officers and 250 men of the 1/5th Battalion who climbed over the parapet on that fateful day. It is also a battlefield guide for those who want to explore, down at trench level, the ground on which this extraordinary episode of the Gallipoli campaign took place.

As a follow-up to his hugely popular 2016 autobiography Trailblazer, Ryan Sandes’ new book explores the gripping and often life-threatening adventures this extraordinary ultra-trail runner has experienced around the globe since then. Not only have these projects tested the very edge of human endurance, but on several occasions, Ryan literally had to run for his life. Along with a 1 500-kilometre Himalayan adventure, read about his attempt at completing the first 700-kilometre solo run up Namibia’s legendary Skeleton Coast – only to stumble upon some very angry Namibian soldiers conducting controversial seal clubbing. And, with his running partner Ryno Griesel, becoming the first people to run the entire circumference of Lesotho in one go, during which they find themselves fighting off an attack from local herdsmen armed with rocks and knobkerries. In between these adventures, Ryan battles to balance a challenging career with a dedicated commitment to his young family. Run. Risk. Reward. is packed with adventure, humour and some fascinating insights into the psyche of an ultra-endurance athlete. These people are not like you and me …

This workbook, the second of a two-part series, is for students and teachers preparing for the GCSE French exams beginning in 2026 (first teaching September 2024).Just like Part One, each one of the five units in this book consists of the following: Foundation Tier vocabulary building exercises, followed by exam-style Foundation Reading tasks.Higher Tier vocabulary building exercises followed by Higher Reading tasks.A Grammar Focus section with explanations and practice exercises on priority areas, such as verb tenses.A set of pre-speaking and writing exercises.Exam-style photo card and role-play tasks at Foundation and Higher Tier.Exam-style writing tasks at Foundation and Higher Tier.A bank of adaptable model sentences to help students learn material for speaking and writing. Each unit has been planned to recycle the same words, chunks and sentences many times over to help students remember as much as possible when they do the exam. We know how important frequent repetition is for students of all levels of proficiency. In addition, much of the high-frequency vocabulary and structures are encountered across all the units. The content has been written to take account of the DfE's requirement that GCSE students "should become familiar with aspects of the contexts and cultures of the countries and communities where the language is spoken".Thematic, vocabulary and grammar content has been matched against the new specifications and should be suitable for both AQA and Pearson-Edexcel.Students may work through the whole book, or teachers may like to photocopy individual pages, sections or whole units. An answer key is provided.
