From his formative years to fame at the end of his life, this selection of letters is accompanied by profiles of his correspondents, expert introductions and comprehensive annotations. Illustrated with some of Monet’s best-known paintings, contemporary photographs and reproductions of some of the letters themselves, his world is revealed in words and images as never before. The portrait offers the possibility of observation and introspection, and is at the same time one of the most private and representative artistic genres. But what distinguishes the specifically female gaze? On the occasion of the major fall exhibition 2021 at Fondation Beyeler, this catalog brings together nine women artists from Europe and America from the beginning of modernism to the present day, whose works represent an outstanding contribution to the history of the portrait. The individual view of the artists on themselves and on their surroundings in the course of time is expressed. In the catalog, renowned authors explore the individual artists and their fascinating ways of reflecting on themselves and on others. The featured artists are Mary Cassatt, Marlene Dumas, Frida Kahlo, Lotte Laserstein, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Berthe Morisot, Alice Neel, Elizabeth Peyton, and Cindy Sherman.

The Barnes Foundation s holdings of works by the renowned Post-Impressionist Paul Cezanne (1839 1906) sixty-one oils on canvas and eight works on paper are among the most significant in the world. The Barnes Foundation was established in 1922 by scientist, entrepreneur, and educator Dr. Albert C. Barnes, a passionate supporter of European modernism. His virtually unrivalled collection, which can only be viewed at the Barnes Foundation, also includes exceptional paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and many others. Beginning in 1912, Barnes acquired works by Cezanne from major Paris dealers such as Paul Durand-Ruel and soon ranked among the artist s most prominent collectors. At the time, this expressed a pioneering taste that Barnes shared with only a small group of enthusiasts, even though Cezanne had been posthumously hailed as a father of modern art at the turn of the twentieth century. The foundation s impressive holdings of Cezannes never before published in a single study in their entirety span every period of the artist s career and include his largest rendition of The Card Players and one of the three versions of The Large Bathers, one of his signal testaments. This lavishly illustrated landmark volume is both a work on Cezanne and his time, and an impetus for further study of an artist whose oeuvre is at once luminous, austere, challenging, and deeply confounding.

A detailed and highly personal account of the life and works of one of the most influential female Impressionist painters: Berthe Morisot. Berthe Morisot won over the Impressionists with her talent and became the first woman of the group alongside Monet, Degas, Renoir, Pissarro, and Sisley. Likewise, she was heralded by the greatest writers of her time; in this tribute to her, an anthology of citations from Paul Val ry, St phane Mallarm , and Jean Cocteau offers an intimate portrait of the artist and her work. Morisot's paintings demonstrate how far ahead of her time she was when she created them, pioneering a new style of painting. However, she was underestimated for more than a century--most probably because she was a woman. Including previously unpublished correspondence with key members of the Impressionist movement, this text focuses on the important stages of Morisot's career, including her first participation in the Salon de Paris at the age of twenty-three in 1864, her marriage in 1874 to Eug ne, Manet's brother, and the birth of their daughter, Julie Manet, who became the subject of many of Morisot's subsequent paintings. This book is an essential read for any lover of Berthe Morisot's work, and indeed for anyone who appreciates the work of the Impressionist artists.
