About 55 million Europeans migrated to the New World between 1850 and 1914, landing in North and South America and in Australia. This movement, which marked a profound and permanent shift in global population and economic activity, is described in vivid detail by Timothy J. Hatton and Jeffrey G. Williamson, and the causes and effects relative to this great relocation are soundly analysed. The Age of Mass Migration offers a thorough treatment of a period of vital development in the economic history of the modern world and, moreover, devotes much objective consideration to certain economic questions that still baffle us today: Why does a nation's emigration rate typically rise with early industrialization? How do immigrants choose their destinations? Are international labour markets segmented? Do immigrants truly "rob" jobs from locals? What impact do immigrants have on wage rates and living standards in the host country? In addressing these issues, and many of others, this book takes a new and comprehensive view of mass migration. Although somewhat controversial in terms of method--it assigns to a social phenomenon an economic explanation and interpretation-- The Age of Mass Migration will be useful to all students of migration, historical or contemporary, and to anyone interested in international economic activities.

Eternal Rose, A Novel of Secrets, Scars, and Second Chances In a world of opulence and ambition, Constance Magenta appears to have it all-wealth, beauty, and prestige. But behind the gilded gates of her Missouri estate lies a lifetime of pain, beginning with a childhood marred by domestic violence and culminating in a marriage that mirrors the very trauma she once fled. When her husband, Charleton Magenta-a powerful construction magnate-announces his bid for governor without her knowledge, Constance's carefully composed world shatters. Her public breakdown at a lavish gala becomes a national scandal, exposing long-buried truths about abuse, neglect, and the cost of silence. As the media frenzy intensifies, Charleton faces mounting pressure from political allies, criminal threats from a ruthless loan shark, and the unraveling of his family. Their son, Ted, discovers he has a child with his former girlfriend, Tonya, a woman whose quiet strength and faith offer a stark contrast to the chaos around them. Meanwhile, Melissa, Ted's fianc e and a rising star in the modeling world, undergoes a spiritual awakening that challenges everything she thought she wanted. Told with emotional depth and spiritual insight, Eternal Rose is a sweeping, multi-generational story of brokenness and redemption. It explores the power of forgiveness, the resilience of women, and the courage it takes to bloom in the aftermath of devastation. A story for anyone who has ever longed for healing, for truth, and for the kind of love that doesn't leave bruises. About the Author I can't remember not writing but things changed when I was in my eighth-grade English class taught by Mrs. Buckaloo. She read my poem about teenage life to the class and they enjoyed it, and I knew then that God had blessed me to share my heart. Later in life I had the opportunity to become a trucker, which fit me well because I knew, during my downtime I could keep on writing; so I did, because I just knew, one day it would all work out if I didn't give up. In 1976 I began hauling furniture, potato chips, and I shuttled trucks. Then from 1985 until 2007 I drove for Walmart stores and from 2007 until 2022 I worked for the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) Transportation department. As a Program Specialist I taught students how to drive the big trucks, and from 2022 to the present I continue to work as a C.D.L. tester with DMACC. One thing I tell myself every day I teach students: "Everybody had a first day, and everybody was new once." That keeps me grounded and to this day I continue to write because I still want to share my heart to bring hope, peace, and love to those who need it the most.
