A comprehensive intellectual biography of the Enlightenment philosopherIn George Berkeley: A Philosophical Life, Tom Jones provides a comprehensive account of the life and work of the preeminent Irish philosopher of the Enlightenment. From his early brilliance as a student and fellow at Trinity College Dublin to his later years as Bishop of Cloyne, Berkeley brought his searching and powerful intellect to bear on the full range of eighteenth-century thought and experience.Jones brings vividly to life the complexities and contradictions of Berkeley’s life and ideas. He advanced a radical immaterialism, holding that the only reality was minds, their thoughts, and their perceptions, without any physical substance underlying them. But he put forward this counterintuitive philosophy in support of the existence and ultimate sovereignty of God. Berkeley was an energetic social reformer, deeply interested in educational and economic improvement, including for the indigenous peoples of North America, yet he believed strongly in obedience to hierarchy and defended slavery. And although he spent much of his life in Ireland, he followed his time at Trinity with years of travel that took him to London, Italy, and New England, where he spent two years trying to establish a university for Bermuda, before returning to Ireland to take up an Anglican bishopric in a predominantly Catholic country.Jones draws on the full range of Berkeley’s writings, from philosophical treatises to personal letters and journals, to probe the deep connections between his life and work. The result is a richly detailed and rounded portrait of a major Enlightenment thinker and the world in which he lived.

We were much like most other families in America. There were places to go, things to do, and a schedule to keep. My wife Karen and I had been leading an African Mission ministry for ten years. We were partnered with Compassion International and four local churches in Kenya. I am a Deacon at my home church in Lansing, Michigan and I Mentor men in the US and in Kenya. My life style is an active one participating in a variety of strenuous activities. Disc golf, jogging, and hunting to name a few. Our life was fast paced and in hindsight I believe we often took life for granted. I was clueless of what life had in store for me in 2019. The doctors said I was Lucky To Be Alive and even now I get cold chills up my spine when I think about how close I came to death. Suddenly without warning my life was filled with uncertainty. The year was full of raw emotions and my faith was tested to the limit. At times I felt like David standing in front of Goliath. It is not easy to face giants in our lives and a strong faith in God, a good wife and prayers from countless people were all necessities on my journey. Walk this journey with me as you feel what I was feeling. At times there was fear of the unknown and a feeling of being totally alone. At other times doubt in my quality of life or even if I would be alive at all. As I called out to God for help you can see how he guided me every step of the way. I received hope and faith which enabled me to continue the fight. With each little victory my faith grew. Faith that God had more for me to do on this earth. This faith gave me peace on my journey and allowed me to focus on the task at hand of a full recovery. Now I am exciting to still be alive and following the path God has for me. Thank you Jesus.

Stockton, California experienced a high-voltage jolt of enthusiasm during the 1960s when a young basketball coach named Dick Edwards brought a city together. Hired by the University of the Pacific to coach its team, Edwards had an ability to go "outside the campus gates" and capture the support of the city of Stockton and the outlying community. He built a rabid fan base that became honorary Pacific alumni and they all turned an old opera house in downtown Stockton into a "capitol" of basketball. The enthusiasm of the city helped Edwards develop a nationally-ranked program that the University of the Pacific, the city of Stockton, the county of San Joaquin, and the core of California's great Central Valley would grow to give unconditional support and interest.Read how a fiery coach and a small group of dedicated assistants used a hardscrabble approach with a bunch of driven athletes to make Stockton and the University of the Pacific shine.

What if Jesus Had a Dog?A dog that trotted along beside Him from Capernaum to Calvary? A dog that understood far more than any of the disciples? A dog that would protect Him with his life if he felt it was necessary? What difference would that have made in the lives of Jesus and the disciples? Those questions are answered in Waldo Maccabees, In the Footsteps of Christ. Along the way, the book's firm foundation of solid research and extensive footnotes puts old familiar stories in their proper historical and sociological perspective, giving them a new and deeper meaning than ever before.

In the earliest decades of the 20th century, more than twenty-eight million men and women-black and white-began "The Great Migration" north from the Deep South and Appalachia, lured by high wages and the opportunity to make a better life for themselves and their families.Among the white southerners who left their homes, literally hundreds of thousands came to work in the rubber factories of Ohio during the teens and twenties, forever changing its culture, history and politics. Who were they? Other than the throwaway term of "hillbillies," the astonishing fact is that historians really haven't had any idea at all. They tell us that no records, no memoirs, no photographs, no letters home exist for these workers during this defining period of northeast Ohio's history. However, there was one archive that none of these historians knew existed.Based on over 50 hours of previously unpublished oral histories and dozens of family photos, "On A Burning Deck, Return to Akron" continues their story begun in "On A Burning Deck, The Road to Akron," as the head of the family struggles to support a family during recession, depression and strike only to eventually take his place in local government, personally establishing a modern police department and shepherding his community's growth in the years following World War II.Meticulously researched, rich in detail, thoroughly referenced for historical perspective, and completely indexed with hundreds of names, this contextual oral history offers the only first-hand account of industrial Ohio's boom years. A must-read for anyone interested in 20th century history, Kentucky or Ohio history, industrial relations, local governance or genealogy, "On A Burning Deck" is a tale well-told with wry humor and deep insight into the people, the "hillbillies," who built modern industrial Ohio.

A gripping first-hand account of life in space and the making of an astronaut. What is it like to fly the space shuttle and work on and in the International Space Station? Veteran NASA astronaut Tom Jones is uniquely qualified to give the details: he flew four shuttle missions and led three space walks to deliver the US Lab to the Station. . From B-52 pilot during the Cold War, to a PhD in planetary science, to the unbelievable rigors of astronaut training, his career inevitably pointed him toward the space shuttle. Until the Challenger exploded. Jones's story is the first to candidly explain the professional and personal hardships faced by the astronauts in the aftermath of that 1986 tragedy. He certainly has 'The Right Stuff' but also found himself wondering if the risks he undertook were worth the toll on his family. Liftoffs were especially nerve-wracking (his mother, who refuses to even get on a plane, cannot watch) but his 53 days in space were unforgettable adventures. Jones uses his background as a scientist to explain the practical applications of many of the shuttle's scientific missions, and describes what it's like to work with the international crews building and living aboard the space station. Tom Jones returned from his space station voyage to assess the impact of the 2003 Columbia tragedy, and prescribes a successful course for the U.S. in space. Stunning photographs, many taken in space, illustrate his amazing journey.
Over the Top and Back: The Autobiography
The long-awaited autobiography of legendary singer Tom Jones, following six decades of unparalleled experiences in the spotlight to coincide with his 75th birthday.Across six decades, Sir Tom Jones has maintained a vital career in a risky, unstable business notorious for the short lives of its artists. With a drive that comes from nothing but the love for what he does, he breaks through and then wrestles with the vagaries of the music industry, the nature of success and its inevitable consequences. Having recorded an expansive body of work and performed with fellow artists from across the spectrum and across every popular music genre, from rock, pop and dance to country, blues and soul, the one constant throughout has been his unique musical gifts and unmistakable voice. But how did a boy from a Welsh coal-mining family attain success across the globe? And how has he survived the twists and turns of fame and fortune to not only stay exciting, but actually become more credible and interesting with age? In this, his first ever autobiography, Tom revisits his past and tells the tale of his journey from wartime Pontypridd to LA and beyond. He reveals the stories behind the ups and downs of his fascinating and remarkable life, from the early heydays to the subsequent fallow years to his later period of artistic renaissance. It's the story nobody else knows or understands, told by the man who lived it, and written the only way he knows how: simply and from the heart. Raw, honest, funny and powerful, this is a memoir like no other from one of the world's greatest ever singing talents. This is Tom Jones and Over the Top and Back is his story.

Jobs That Could Kill You reveals who these daring people are, what they will endure for a paycheck, and how they feel about their jobs. They speak for themselves, in their own words.
