An orphan boy kills an interfering priest. As a result a great number of human relationships are changed. Of especial interest is the role friendship plays - or refuses to play, as the story unfolds.

The pathos of modern life and beyond, the pain due to modern existence - described in several of its guises and disguises. These are interesting, often colourful stories that allow us to explore our present state of being.

What the author would like to show in these 16 sequential tales is how erotic spirit, Eros, merges with human being. They are carefully composed and from the first to the last there is a gradual mapping out of our humanity so that a pattern of erotically influenced experience perceptibly rises to the surface.

The desire to be what we are holds the kernel of our inquiry into conduct, in comparison to simply being what we are, which allows for no inquiry and any attempt to attach a study of conduct to human existence as such becomes fictional and illusory from the start. A science of conduct which maintains us in the light of day and teaches us not to fear sleep and to welcome the dream on its own terms.

This is an essay in practical creative philosophy. No attempt is made to link up with any school of thought and the style is not academic but more after the manner of personal conversation with anyone who likes to think and is interested in what it means to be human, especially nowadays. The author is of the persuasion that there is no quick fix for our modern existential problems. He knows from experience that 'strait is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life and few find it'.

This is a lighthearted confession by an elderly man as he looks back on his life and then discovers the last stage of it, which in fact is not a stage at all and he calls it virility.

Invention, imagination, thought - to discipline our hearts, enlarge our vision and enliven our spirit. These 16 tales are written in sequence and are best read that way.

In volume I the author deals with some of the problems of contemporary life in terms of friendship and family. In volume II we are invited to contemplate the implications of value joined with policy. Fantasy plays a role in the rational inception of communal existence based on sense and good will.

The love that informs these sonnets is not romantic-sentimental but that which makes life possible and always again new.

Right from the 'popular' Preamble, which seems to have nothing to do with what follows, to the final section when the writer steps into the body of the novel and succeeds in substantially affecting one of his personal inventions, the shape of the novel is continually transformed. An accommodation of this theme cannot but confront certain philosophical dilemmas, such as the notion of a standard identity and the validity and ethic of suffering. Also the device of author and writer as two entities has been made use of for the sake of creative integrity. Doubtless there will be those who find this book heavy going, however the reward for persevering is not negligible.

Fantasy, invention, personal experience - a sense of the absurd - all these play a role, separately or in combination. Taken as a whole, they are not a collection but a series, adhering to an internal, developmental element. The principle attraction, as I see it, is surely the language, the way it insists on itself as worthy of distinction and not necessarily in need of rhetorical devices.
