This book presents the socio-cultural and historical trajectories of the Deccan plateau as well as the coastal areas of the current states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa. It studies the art of diplomacy by discussing the diplomatic relations between the Marathas and various European companies, as well as the indigenous regional states. The author also probes into the Maratha naval policy, the evolution of a composite Deccani culture and the cultural flux that was taking place within the Maratha country. Through an interdisciplinary lens, the volume examines how caste and gender relations operated, how the idea of dissent was generated as well as the socio-political impact of various linguistic, ethnic and religious groups. Das 17. und 18. Jahrhundert war eine Zeit des Merkantilismus, in der verschiedene europ ische Gesellschaften am profitablen asiatischen Handel teilnahmen und nach und nach Handelsniederlassungen in Indien errichteten, wobei die West- und Ostk ste des Dekkan praktisch zum Knotenpunkt f r Handel, Gewerbe und Investitionen im Welthandel wurde. Der Dekkan verwandelte sich in eine integrative Wirtschaft, in der verschiedene, recht offene, assimilierende, kosmopolitische Kulturen und Gemeinschaften entstanden. Jahrhundert auch im Bankwesen, das f r den Unterhalt der neuen "merkantilistischen" einheimischen Staaten immer wichtiger wurde: die Marathas, Tanjore, Mysore, Hyderabad, Arcot usw. Der Dekkan wurde zu dem Teil der Struktur, von dem das berleben des Handels abhing. Frankreich, in erster Linie eine Handelsnation, wandte sich zu einem Zeitpunkt, als die politischen Verh ltnisse in Indien insgesamt am Rande des Chaos standen, der Erschlie ung von Kolonien zu. Die vorliegende Reihe versucht, einen Einblick in diese unerforschte Zeit zu geben.

Il XVII e il XVIII secolo furono testimoni di un periodo di mercantilismo, che vide le varie compagnie europee prendere parte al redditizio commercio asiatico e partecipare gradualmente alla creazione di punti di scambio in India, in cui le coste occidentali e orientali del Deccan divennero virtualmente i punti nodali per gli scambi, il commercio e gli investimenti nel commercio mondiale. Il Deccan si stava trasformando in un'economia inclusiva, creando culture e comunit diverse, abbastanza aperte, assimilabili e cosmopolite. Gradualmente, nel corso del XVIII secolo, trov anche uno sbocco nel settore bancario, che divenne sempre pi importante per sostenere i nuovi Stati indigeni "mercantilisti" i Marathas, Tanjore, Mysore, Hyderabad, Arcot, ecc. Il Deccan divenne quella parte della struttura da cui dipendeva la sopravvivenza del commercio. La Francia, in primo luogo una nazione commerciale, si rivolse a ritagliarsi delle colonie, in un momento in cui la condizione politica complessiva dell'India era sull'orlo del caos; in tali circostanze la Francia cercava di affermare la sua gloria perduta e di riconquistare almeno una posizione di parit con l'Inghilterra, suo concorrente europeo. Questa serie tenta di fornire uno spaccato di questo periodo non ancora trascorso.

Le Deccan se transformait en une conomie inclusive, cr ant des cultures et des communaut s diff rentes, assez ouvertes, assimilatrices et cosmopolites. Progressivement, au cours du XVIIIe si cle, il a galement trouv un d bouch dans le secteur bancaire, qui est devenu de plus en plus important pour soutenir les nouveaux tats indig nes "mercantilistes" les Marathas, Tanjore, Mysore, Hyderabad, Arcot, etc. Le Deccan est devenu cette partie de la structure dont d pendait la survie du commerce. La France, qui tait avant tout une nation commer ante, s'est tourn e vers la conqu te de colonies, un moment o la situation politique globale de l'Inde tait au bord du chaos. Dans ces circonstances, la France essayait de r tablir sa gloire perdue et de retrouver au moins un pied d' galit avec son concurrent europ en, l'Angleterre. Cette s rie tente de donner un aper u de cette p riode in dite.

A Fran a, principalmente uma na o mercantilista, virou-se para a cria o de col nias, numa conjuntura em que a condi o pol tica total na ndia estava beira do caos, em tais circunst ncias a Fran a tentava estabelecer a sua gl ria perdida e, pelo menos, recuperar uma posi o de igualdade com a sua concorrente europeia Inglaterra. Esta s rie tenta proporcionar um vislumbre deste per odo n o explorado.
