In recent years, the contributions of technology to the practice of orthodontics have increased at an ever-quickening pace. Three-dimensional printing is one of the cutting-edge technologies in the manufacturing industry. Three-dimensional printing technology is an additive manufacturing technology that is used to reconstruct 3D objects. In the last decade, it has been rapidly involved in dentistry and orthodontics. In orthodontics, expanders are used to expand and widen the upper arch to correct a crossbite or issues like overcrowding or a narrow palate. Traditional expanders were made of metal and acrylic, but 3D printing has introduced a more precise and customisable option. With 3D printing, orthodontists can create expanders tailored to each patient's unique oral anatomy. Using digital scans or impressions, a detailed model of the patient's mouth is generated.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing orthodontics by enhancing diagnostics, treatment planning, and patient care. AI algorithms analyze dental images, such as X-rays and 3D scans, improving the accuracy of identifying dental anomalies and streamlining diagnostics. In treatment planning, machine learning predicts and simulates outcomes, allowing orthodontists to tailor interventions more precisely. Virtual treatment monitoring systems, powered by AI, enable remote tracking of patient progress, reducing in-person visits and improving patient compliance. AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants streamline administrative tasks and enhance communication between orthodontic professionals and patients. Despite these advancements, ethical considerations and data privacy remain critical in the ongoing integration of AI into orthodontic practices. Overall, AI promises to deliver more personalized, efficient, and effective orthodontic care.

In modern dentistry, digital technologies have a considerable impact on the diagnosis, planning, and execution of orthodontic treatment, leading to substantial advancements in the field of orthodontics. Customization in orthodontics is a computerized system that designs orthodontic appliances for individual patients. A customized appliance system uses digital models of the patients arches to simulate the optimal position of each dental element and the ideal final occlusion. Once the desired virtual result is achieved, the personalized archwires, brackets are made. Customized systems allow orthodontists to initiate treatment with the final goal in mind, and streamline mechanics towards a preestablished result. These techniques start by creating a setup of the desired outcome that serves as a diagnostic aid and is used for appliance fabrication. Through the use of intraoral scanning, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), three-dimensional (3D) photography, and computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technologies, a novel customised system enables the assessment of changes in 3D and customization of treatment planning brackets, and wires.

Cleft lip and palate are congenital abnormalities that affect the upper lip and the hard and soft palate of the mouth. The severity of the abnormalities may range from a small notch in the lip to a complete fissure groove) extending into the roof of the mouth and nose. NAM is a multi-disciplinary treatment approach that combines the expertise of various healthcare professionals, including pediatric dentists, orthodontists, prosthodontists, plastic surgeons, and speech therapists. The treatment typically begins within the first few weeks of life and continues until the time of surgical intervention, usually around three to six months of age. During this period, the infant wears a custom-made nasal stent or molding plate, which is adjusted periodically to gradually reshape the cleft segments and improve nasal symmetry. A non-surgical procedure called nasoalveolar molding (NAM) involves molding the infant's gums, lips, and nostrils using a custom-made appliance to reduce the lip gap and realign the nasal cartilage. NAM enhances the appearance of the restored lip and nose, reduces the need for extensive surgical operations, and improves long-term speech and dental outcomes.
