The branches are not generally on the tourist itinerary, although they traverse green and pleasant land. The double track route to Southend retains most of its original buildings, while the single Crouch Valley Line has kept only some of them, but it can never loose the impressive vistas of the river itself. A relaxing journey to be savoured.
This once important holiday route had through coaches from Euston and long trains from Manchester for many years. It also provided vital links with the slate industry for its entire life. Trains for all types are illustrated at the widely assorted stations, throughout the ages. Included is the Llanberis branch, the Snowdon Mountain Railway and the Llanberis Lakeside Railway
The Enfield branch was extended north to form the Hertford Loop and thus create a diversionary route for the main line to King's Cross. The centre part has reached its centenary of opening and the concept has proved to have been a great success. The variety of trains shown herein confirms this
Once part of the GWR's Didcot to Birkenhead route, this line carried a heavy coal traffic from the mines in the Wrexham area. The many charming rural stations are illustrated, along with a wide range of trains of all types and ages.
The complex history, the scenic joys and the important minerals combine to make this fascinating series of photographs. The Great Western is evident in many of the views from a forgotten past.
The evolution of the present electrified branch to Hertford East through the steam era is illustrated in detail. The two lines from Hatfield suffered a steady decline in rural surroundings. The long country branch to Buntingford had a charm of its own and lasted into the diesel period to be photographed thoroughly, as seen herein.
At the head of the Rhymney Valley were two almost parallel lines, only one of which is illustrated in detail. Maps of various scales help to tell their story and the ways in which they served the community.
The magnificent scenery of the Cambrian Mountains and the tranquil beauty of the Dovey Estuary have enhanced photographs of this route over the ages.
