Ruohoa herätti ilmestyessään valtavaa huomiota, järkytti vakiintuneita käsityksiä. Meni vuosikymmeniä, ennen kuin pilkattu, parjattu, häväisty ja halveksittu runoteos tajuttiin erääksi maailmankirjallisuuden ainutlaatuisimmista saavutuksista. Whitman itse lausui: ”Minua ei voida kääntää ja selittää, minut voidaan vain käsittää.” Kokoelma julkaistiin ensimmäisen kerran 1855, mutta runoilija laajensi ja paranteli sitä vielä vuosikymmenien ajan, niin että lopullinen laitos ilmestyi 1890-luvulla. Walt Whitman syntyi talonpojan poikana Long Islandilla 1819. Hän sai varsin sattumanvaraisen kasvatuksen ja toimi monissa eri ammateissa. Ajoittain hän julkaisi eri paikkakunnilla sanomalehtiä ja aikakausjulkaisuja. Hän osallistui lääkintämiehenä Amerikan sisällissotaan ja kohosi sodan jälkeen virkailijaksi sisäasiainministeriöön. Viimeisinä vuosikymmeninään hän sairasteli paljon. Samalla hänen kirjallinen toimintansa lisääntyi ja hänen varhaisempi asiallinen, materialistinen runoutensa sai sairauden aikana mystillisiä, idealistisia piirteitä. Vielä kuolinvuoteellaan hän viimeisteli pääteoksensa, Ruohoa-kokoelman runoja. Hän kuoli New Jerseyssä 1892.
