Precipitation Assessment: Formation, Assessment and Hazards offers a comprehensive overview of precipitation that brings together the fundamental principles of formation, the necessary methods and tools for assessment, and the key aspects of precipitation hazards. The first chapters focus on the formation of precipitation, including contents moisture, clouds and convection, weather systems that create precipitation (frontal systems, cyclones, atmospheric rivers etc.), precipitation types (rainfall and snowfall) and their forming mechanisms. Then several chapters explore precipitation measurements, types of precipitation data (in-situ data, remote sensing, reanalysis data, and combined products), metrics for precipitation assessment (depth, intensity and extremes), tools for precipitation assessment (IDF curve, PMP and Taylor Diagram). The book closes with a detailed discussion of precipitation extremes as well as considerations in the face of climate change. Readers will appreciate this comprehensive review of the latest developments in precipitation formation, assessment methods, and extreme precipitation hazards.
Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Reinforcement of Concrete Structures: Addressing Bond Failures
Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Reinforcement of Concrete Structures: Addressing Bond Failures provides a comprehensive, research-informed, and practice-oriented resource on the strengthening and durability of aging RC (Reinforcement of Concrete) structures using FRP. The book integrates the diverse aspects of FRP strengthening – from the micro-scale phenomena of bonding and material behavior to the macro-scale performance of structural members – into a coherent framework for both research and application in real-world situations. This book examines the dynamic intermingling of Asian performance of theatre and dance across the borders of the ancient Silk Road, which connected China with cultures and countries throughout Asia, and beyond. Revealing the dynamic interweaving of cultures between China and its neighbors from the time of the ancient Silk Road to modern times, the book demonstrates how such interweaving has been reflected and embodied in the performance forms and genres of East, South, and Southeast Asia. Through individual explorations of the artistic expressions in these Asian countries, the book reveals the transformative impact of the dissemination and interfusion of religion, beliefs, and cultural practices on the development of performance arts/genres in Asia. The book effectively displays how this robust interfusion across borders left a profound and indelible imprint on the various forms of artistic expression. Representing a succinct analysis of the thousands of years of intercultural cross-fertilization and diffusion across borders of the performing arts in Asia, this book makes an important contribution to transcultural studies in theatre, dance, performance, literature.

Teacher Preparation in China offers a comprehensive overview of the history of Chinese teacher preparation and curriculum reform. The authors identify connections between past and present teacher preparation and discuss future directions of China as a growing education powerhouse. Providing an overview of the history of Chinese teacher preparation spanning a millennium, the authors begin with an introduction for a non-Mandarin Readership to Chinese education history and teacher preparation practices beginning at the era of Confucius (551-479 BC) emphasising the stability of Confucian ideology over centuries and how education of the elite underpinned Chinese social values. The remaining chapters convey the dramatic changes China experienced as a result of its 19th century interaction with Western powers and the Nationalist Revolution which democratised China and modernised education in China prior to World War Two. The modern history of China since the 1949 Communist Revolution is also explored by focusing on the realities of teacher preparation during each Chairmanship of the Chinese Communist Party’s leadership from Mao Zedong to Xi Jinping. Appealing to historians, futurists, teachers and teacher educators who are curious about being a teacher in the world’s most populous nation, the chapters provide an insight into previously hidden knowledge about China’s curriculum and pedagogy, linking ancient Confucian legacies to the radical reforms of various Communist leaders, whilst seeking to understand where education and power are going to lead in the coming decades.

Biorenewable Solvents for Organic Synthesis

Biorenewable Solvents for Organic Synthesis

In this brief the authors introduce a series of recently developed bio-based solvents including cyclopentyl methyl ether (CPME), ?-valerolactone (GVL), 2-methyl tetrahydrofuran (2-MeTHF), propylene carbonate (PC), and cyrene. Traditional organic solvents used for organic synthesis (such as benzene, ether, chloroform) have a series drawbacks on toxicity, environmental impact, and safely related issues. In addition, the fossil fuel-derived organic solvents are not sustainable. Therefore the development of biorenewable solvents is a topic of current interest. For each of the solvents, their production, toxicity profile, renewable pathway, and their utility in organic synthesis, biosynthesis, and separation processes is discussed. The target audiences of this book are organic and medicinal chemists with interests in using green solvents. It can also be used as a reference for undergraduate and graduate courses related to organic and green chemistry.

Zhang analyses the phenomenon of private supplementary tutoring from a global perspective. The expansion of such tutoring alongside schooling is among the striking global shifts since the turn of the century. In many countries over half of the relevant cohorts of children receive private tutoring, with that proportion in some locations exceeding 80%. The sector has far-reaching implications for social inequalities, (in)efficiencies in educational processes, study burdens on students, family finances, innovation, and employment. Yet greatly-needed government regulations have typically been slow to catch up with the phenomenon.Commentary in the volume juxtaposes countries with strong regulations with counterparts having weak regulations. Conceptually, the book considers forces changing the roles of multiple stakeholders, including governments, entrepreneurs, teachers, families and students.A useful read for students and researchers interested in comparative education and governance. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license.

This book focuses on security science and technology, data and information security, and mobile and network security for space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGINs). SAGIN are expected to play an increasingly important role in providing real-time, flexible, and integrated communication and data transmission services in an efficient manner. Today, SAGINs have been widely developed for a range of applications in navigation, environmental monitoring, traffic management, counter-terrorism, etc. However, security becomes a major concern, since the satellites, spacecrafts, and aircrafts are susceptible to a variety of traditional/specific network-based attacks, including eavesdropping, session hijacking, and illegal access. In this book, we review the theoretical foundations of SAGIN security. We also address a range of related security threats and provide cutting-edge solutions in the aspect of ground network security, airborne network security, space network security, and provide future trends in SAGIN security. The book goes from an introduction to the topic’s background, to a description of the basic theory, and then to cutting-edge technologies, making it suitable for readers at all levels including professional researchers and beginners. To gain the most from the book, readers should have taken prior courses in information theory, cryptography, network security, etc.
