No book since the apostles has more positively impacted the means and methods of the church's mission to reach the entire world with the gospel than William Carey's An Enquiry. First published in 1792, Carey struck a match that set fire to English Particular Baptists not only to organize their first global missions society, with Carey as its first commissioned missionary, but also sparked a continual flame of newly formed mission societies that expanded global missions for the next 100 years so far and wide, it led the eminent Yale church historian, Kenneth Scott Latourette, to proclaim the era "The Great Century" of Christian missions.
An Enquiry Into The Obligations Of Christians To Use Means For The Conversion Of The Heathens
The landmark text by William Carey sets out the principles of converting natives of foreign lands to Christianity. An Enquiry into the Obligations of Christians to Use Means for the Conversion of the Heathens led directly to the formation of the Baptist Missionary Society, and was to inspire Christian missionaries for generations to follow. The author himself could boast great experience: having amassed oratorical experience during his younger years as a schoolmaster, and as the pastor of Leicester's Harvey Lane Baptist Church. The text contains impassioned arguments which attempt to justify missionary work, followed by a researched history of the practice. Later, Carey discusses charts which measure populations through the world and their religious beliefs. All of these charts are reproduced for this edition, allowing the reader insight into Carey's ambitious approach.

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. An Enquiry Into the Obligations of Christians: To Use Means for the Conversion of the Heathens
An Enquiry into the Obligations of Christians, to use means for the conversion of the heathens. By William Carey. In Which the Religious State of the Different Nations of the World, the Success of former Undertakings, and the Practicability of Further Undertakings, Are Considered As our blessed Lord has required us to pray that his kingdom may come, and his will be done on earth as it is in heaven, it becomes us not only to express our desires of that event by words, but to use every lawful method to spread the knowledge of his name. In order to this, it is necessary that we should become, in some measure acquainted with the religious state of the world; and as this is an object we should be prompted to pursue, not only by the gospel of our Redeemer, but even by the feelings of humanity, so an inclination to conscientious activity therein would form one of the strongest proofs that we are the subjects of grace, and partakers of that spirit of universal benevolence and genuine philanthropy, which appear so eminent in the character of God himself. For there is no Difference between the Jew and the Greek; for the same Lord over all, is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him, in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a Preacher? and how shall they preach except they be sent?

Marathi, an official language of Maharashtra and Goa, is among the twenty most widely spoken languages in the world. The southernmost Indo-Aryan language, it is also spoken in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Daman and Diu, and is believed to be over 1,300 years old, with its origins in Sanskrit. First published in 1805, this grammar of Marathi (then known as Mahratta) was compiled by the Baptist missionary William Carey (1761–1834) during his time in India. Its purpose was to assist Carey's European students at Fort William College in their learning of the language, and it is comprehensive in ITS coverage, providing numerous examples. Containing detailed descriptions of Marathi's Devanagari alphabet, its word and sentence formation, and its complex tense, voice, gender, agreement, inflection, and case systems, the work remains an invaluable resource for linguists today. Carey's 1810 dictionary of Marathi is also reissued in this series.
