Sir William Chambers (1723 1796) var en svensk-brittisk arkitekt med en ovanlig meritlista. Han ritade såväl fantasifulla slottsbyggnader och luxuösa inredningar som enkel och rationell nyttoarkitektur. Efter uppväxten i Sverige och utbildning i Paris och Rom verkade han mestadels i England. Där blev han en favorit hos Georg III och anses ha varit det sena 1700-talets viktigaste arkitekt. Men livet igenom framhöll han sin svenska bakgrund och var också verksam i Sverige. Chambers var en av grundarna till Royal Academy of Arts 1768 och han gav ut ett flertal såväl praktiska som teoretiska skrifter om arkitektur, trädgård och inredning. A Treatise on Civil Architecture utkom första gången 1759 och är en handbok i arkitektur i vilken Chambers på ett pedagogiskt sätt ville förklara byggnadskonstens grunder. Än idag fungerar den som en utmärkt vägledning till den klassiska arkitekturen med kärnfulla texter och vackra illustrationer av olika byggnadstyper och deras funktioner. 2023 är det 300 år sedan William Chambers föddes, vilket bland annat kommer att uppmärksammas genom vår reproduktion av ett av hans viktigaste verk. I Sverige är Chambers ett relativt okänt namn, trots att han utförde flera uppdrag här och fick stor betydelse som inspiratör. Hans böcker är relevanta även för samtida arkitektur- och trädgårdskonst. Boken har ett nyskrivet förord av Frank Salmon och utkommer endast på engelska.
