The Blind Advantage

The Blind Advantage

The Blind Advantage provides insight into the challenges, possibilities, and practicalities of including students with disabilities—and into the mind and heart of an inspired and determined leader.“You should get out of education.”That was the advice first-year teacher Bill Henderson received when he discovered he was gradually losing his vision. Instead, Henderson persevered and became principal of the Patrick O’Hearn Elementary School in Boston, an ethnically and economically diverse school where about a third of the students have mild, moderate, or significant disabilities. In The Blind Advantage, Henderson describes how the journey into blindness helped him develop key qualities—determination, vision, sensitivity, organization, collaboration, and humor—that made him a more effective principal. At the same time, he shows how the inclusionary policies and practices at the O’Hearn School (now renamed the William W. Henderson Inclusion Elementary School) elicited and developed these qualities in others. An audio version of this book is available for purchase. Adam Smith is well recognized as the forefather of modern economics, but his success can be attributed not only to what he wrote but also to his use of language. In this exciting new book, Willie Henderson shows how Smith engaged creatively in writing about the economy, and analyzes the extent to which he tried to ensure that the reader is drawn into the text and informed by it.Demonstrating analysis methods that are helpful to new researchers on Smith’s works, Evaluating Adam Smith sets his work in the cultural context of the eighteenth century and explores the lexical and conceptual inter-relations between Smith and the sources he consulted. Issues explored include Smith’s use of irony and his work in the context of wealth, virtue and happiness as presented in the Moral Sentiments and the Wealth of Nations.Henderson’s informative study employs the literary techniques of close reading and close textual analysis and applies them to sustained passages of Smith’s writing.

Mass Spectrometry of Inorganic and Organometallic Compounds

Mass Spectrometry of Inorganic and Organometallic Compounds

William Henderson; J. Scott McIndoe

John Wiley Sons Inc

This is the first modern book to treat inorganic and organometallic mass spectrometry simultaneously. It is textbook and handbook in one; as a textbook it introduces the techniques and gives hints on how to apply the various techniques, as a handbook it lists all available ionization techniques for just about any given compound. The book also includes non-mathematical explanations of how modern MS instruments work Mass Spectrometry of Inorganic and Organometallic Compounds will inspire the synthetic inorganic and organometallic chemist with the confidence to apply some of the new techniques to their characterization problems.

The most important biographies of List are those by Ludwig Hausser, Friedrich Lenz, Carl August Meissinger, Carl Brinkmann, and Hans Gehrig. List's early career has been examined by Karl Goeser and Paul Gehring, his services to the Union of Merchants by Hans-Peter Olshausen, his work as a journalist by Carl Schneider, and his activities in the United States by William Notz.
John Ruskin's Political Economy

John Ruskin's Political Economy

William Henderson

Routledge

This volume offers an exciting new reading of John Ruskin's economic and social criticism, based on recent research into rhetoric in economics. Willie Henderson uses notions derived from literary criticism, the rhetorical turn in economics and more conventional approaches to historical economic texts to reevaluate Ruskins economic and social criticism. By identifying Ruskin's rhetoric, and by reading his work through that of Plato, Xenophon, and John Stuart Mill, Willie Henderson reveals how Ruskin manipulated a knowledge base. Moreover in analysis of the writings of William Smart, John Bates Clark and Alfred Marshall, the author shows that John Ruskin's influence on the cultural significance of economics and on notions of economic well-being has been considerable.
Economics as Literature

A rich vein of economics writings which runs through the nineteenth century and beyond is now largely ignored because its authors were women or because they favoured literary over scientific forms. Economics as Literature re-examines some of the most interesting texts from within this tradition. The works considered include:*stories (eg by Maria Edgeworth and Harriet Martineau)*dialogues (eg by Jane Marcet and Thomas de Quincey)*'imaginative' writing (eg from Ruskin and Francis Edgeworth)*Keynes' General Theory which is locked within a nineteenth century 'tradition' of uniting science and art.
