The Practice of Prophecy

The Practice of Prophecy

The charisma of prophecy is found throughout the history of the global Pentecostal movement. Within the movement, prophecy is seen as the communication of an inspired, spontaneous revelation, bringing edification to the faith community. Despite its prevalence, academic research has mostly focused on the biblical-theological aspect, neglecting the actual contemporary practice. This book addresses this gap with a study on the practice of prophecy within the Assemblies of God of Singapore. The book investigates the nature, purpose, and significance of the phenomenon. It also identifies theological variables that are correlated with its practice and explicates these relationships. The investigation employs the empirical-theological method of Johannes van der Ven, utilizing both a qualitative and a quantitative study. The results provide a rich description of the actual reception, delivery, and judging of prophecy. Significant findings include relationships between prophecy and courage, love, personality types, prayer types, and evangelism. ""Rev. Dr. Lum possesses a strong analytical mind in processing and exegeting God's word. This book validates his contribution to the body of Christ by providing an outstanding empirical analysis of prophecy and explaining the true biblical motivation for the operation of this spiritual gift in the church. His in-depth research brings clarity and understanding to the gift of prophecy and its importance in the edification of the body."" --Wilson Teo, former president, TCA College, Singapore ""This is a thoroughly well-researched study on contemporary prophecy in Singaporean Assembles of God churches, grounded in a solid empirical-theological framework. It not only is relevant to Asian contexts, but is commended to anyone who wishes to understand the practice of prophecy in Pentecostalism."" --Allan H. Anderson, University of Birmingham ""The Holy Spirit is alive and active today, empowering the people of God to be his mouthpiece. Lum's research on the contemporary practice of prophecy provides much-needed insight on this phenomenon in a region where Pentecostalism is flourishing. Christian leaders will find this book to be a powerful resource for their ministries, providing guidelines for its present and continued use in strengthening, encouraging, and comforting the community of faith."" --Dominic Yeo, General Superintendent, The Assemblies of God of Singapore Dennis Lum is the Dean of the School of Theology at TCA College in Singapore. He is an ordained Assemblies of God minister and also serves as a pastor at Trinity Christian Centre.
Pentecostal and Charismatic Education

Pentecostal and Charismatic Education

BLOOMSBURY PUBLISHING PLC

The enormous Pentecostal and charismatic movement—often called Renewalist—has highlighted the power of the Holy Spirit but has rarely emphasized the movement’s educational range and reach. Formal and informal teaching in many schools, colleges, seminaries, church campuses, homes, and parachurches all contribute to a scattered and varied teaching impetus. Pentecostal and Charismatic Education: Renewalist Education Wherever it is Found looks at education through the eyes of those who see God at work in the world through the church and beyond. The book explores questions like: What should parents look for in a child’s education and what choices do they have? What educational role can churches have? This book offers a worldview invested with traditional Christian theology, but also enlivened by an understanding of the continuing outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

The Pastoral Epistles throw light on the early days of the church and the final phase of Paul's life. This commentary scrutinizes the biblical text while attending to the missional, pastoral, and spiritual challenges facing the worldwide Pentecostal and charismatic (or renewalist) movement. It is written for today's church without ignoring scholarly literature and cultural perspectives. The ministry of women, the appointment of elders, prophecy, church governance, living as a Christian in the Roman Empire, the end times, charismatic gifts, spiritual warfare, slavery, and ordination all feature.

In religious terms Pentecostalism was probably the most vibrant and rapidly-growing religious movement of the 20th century. Starting as a revivalistic and renewal movement within Christianity, it encircled the globe in less than 25 years and grew in North America and then in those parts of the world with the highest birth-rates. Characterised by speaking in tongues, miracles, television evangelism and megachurches, it is also noted for its small-group meetings, empowerment of individuals, liberation of women and humanitarian concerns. Without the financial and military support of the state (as was the case with communism), it flourished in almost every conceivable socio-political environment. Even in Europe, where religion most frequently appeared tired and out of date, Pentecostalism might draw large crowds or, within mainline Christian congregations, flourish in a more muted charismatic form. When these two forms are added together, Pentecostalism and neo-Pentecostalism are thought to account for around 450 million people. William K Kay outlines the origins and growth of Pentecostalism, looking at not only the theological aspects of the movement, but also the sociological influences of its political and humanitarian viewpoints. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Exorcism & Deliverance

Exorcism & Deliverance

A significant examination of exorcism and deliverance from a range of disciplines focuses on an important but often neglected area of the church's mission to the world. The diversity of essays makes sure that every facet is presented to encourage the reader thoroughly to consider this aspect of the church's approach to evil in our society. Since Jesus of Nazareth made exorcism a cornerstone of his own ministry, the Church has seen itself as engaged in a battle against the demonic. Exorcism has continued to play a role throughout Christian history in this conflict, although it has received different emphases in different times and places, and has been practiced in a range of different ways. Exorcism and Deliverance aims to shed new light on the phenomena of possession and exorcism by looking at them from a range of disciplinary perspectives.

Apostolic networks link congregations together through personal relationships. They center around apostolic figures who have the ability to mobilize resources, make rapid decisions, and utilize charismatic gifts. Networks of churches organized in this way can respond to postmodernity and cultural innovation. This book takes the story of the emergence of apostolic networks in Britain from the visionary work of Arthur Wallis through the charismatic renewal into the full-fledged Restoration Movement of the 1980s. It covers the events of the 1990s, including the Toronto Blessing, and contains fresh information based upon interviews with leading players and new survey data as well as reanalysis of historical documents.
