Hunt and his men continue to track down criminals and protect those that cannot protect themselves. Hunt works to continue getting the cattle from Meeker separated and delivered to the right locations.Construction begins in Green River for the hotel, and Hunt hopes he hasn't made a mistake.The men are sent on many missions. One of the Deputy Marshals is rushed to Denver to be treated for a gunshot wound. Horse blunders himself into a real jamb and must marry a woman to prevent the men from being massacred.Hunt's, Hidden Valley Ranch is invaded by trespassers that found his gold-rich vein and the men have hired an attorney to take Hidden Valley away from him.

Hunt's new deputy marshal, Ace Sterling, returns from Chicago and joins the team in time to accompany them on a trip to Utah to bring peace to a small town invaded by a family of ruffians.Hunt is asked by the Phillip-Armour Meat Packing House to get them some hogs and beef cattle. They have acquired vital contracts and are running low on slaughter animals.While returning from Green River bandits rob the train that Hunt and his men are riding on and the effects have endless repercussions for a rancher and his family. The saga is full of unexpected people, occurrences, and opportunities. Hunt meets the Grandson of the man that had, at one time, owned the land that Hunt now calls, Hidden Valley.

Storm Warrior's life continues at a fast pace, and he is able to spend more time with Judith since she named Matt as Vice President and is leaving the everyday bank operations up to Matt.They have a great trip across the ocean with the newlyweds, Ben and Effie. Upon reaching Boston, they journey to Philadelphia where Judith and the children decide to travel with Charles as he shows Ben and Effie, America.After spending two weeks traveling they return to Philadelphia where Charles and Judith say goodbye as they mount a train for Boston.Charles is shocked to find Judith has been shot and sets out on a vendetta to seek revenge. After setting things right in Philadelphia, Charles travels to New York to track down the crime boss that instigated the attack.Charles grew angrier when he discovered that the man behind the attack was none other than Johnny McDonald, the half-brother to Michael McDonald, the man that had kidnapped his daughter Sun Bird from her college dormitory. Charles had shot Michael McDonald for the assault on his daughter, and Johnny McDonald plans to murder Charles, his family, and take over his properties.

Hunt and the men continue making life better for people of the plains by hunting down murderers and thieves. While doing so, Hunt loses one of his most experienced men to an ambush.Cal and Phyllis announce their plans for marriage and trouble erupts when Cal is confronted by Timmy Galloway, the boy that likes Phyllis that Hunt had ordered to never come around again.Hunt gets a visitor, Beau Hamlin, from Fort Hamilton in New York. He has a meaningful talk to understand what Hunt has in mind for his father's ranch in Green River before he agrees to sell Hunt the ranch. A trip to Green River turns deadly when one of the ranch hands proclaims that George Hamlin had promised the ranch to him and that Beau has no right to sell it.A visitor from Washington comes to Denver and asks for Hunt's help to track down a mountain man that has murdered over thirty people and eats them and leaves animal heads on the body after decapitating them.

This episode in Hunt's life is full of surprises, adventure, and shootouts.Hunt intervenes to prevent a local boy from abusing his adopted daughter, Phyllis. The boy's angry father begins to search for Hunt to seek revenge.Hunt's men are sent on various missions to track down thieves and murderers. On one mission, Hunt has put Horse in charge and despite his objection of leading the mission it ends with a successful mission and Horse meets a frontier legend.A gang of marauding thieves and killers that are ravaging towns and robbing banks travel California hit Portland and turn East, and the Army can't catch the fast-moving evasive gang. Hunt is notified that the gang is crossing northern Utah and will soon enter Colorado and their direct path will take them to Hunt's ranches and his herds of cattle, and Clydesdales.With Charles Crawford's horse ranches in the path, as well as Denver itself being in the direct path, Hunt leads the men on a mission to head off the gang and stop them from getting near the ranches, and the town of Denver.A gun battle follows and three of Hunt's men are injured in the shootout and the U.S. Marshals are saved from annihilation by the U.S. Cavalry. Hunt loses one of his ranch workers, and everyone is shaken up at the ranches.Hunt is surprised with a visit from U.S. Marshal Earl Jefferson, and Earl travels to Green River with Hunt to see the ranches that Hunt has purchased. While in Green River, the local bank is robbed and Hunt is involved in a shootout and loses his horse. The thieves turn out to be a rancher that is losing his ranch and before leaving town Hunt talks to the banker about buying the ranch.

Charles stops in Sacramento to see how his construction is going and is shocked to find everything at a standstill, and all of his workers had been sent home due to an injunction filed by the Attorney General.Charles goes to the state capital and visits with the Governor and resolves the issue. The Attorney General is angered and hires a man to kill Charles. Divine intervention prevents Charles from being murdered.Charles stops in Denver and asks his jockeys to bring the horses East for the big race in Baltimore. At the Preakness Stakes, Charles meets the Prince of Saudi Arabia that has brought a horse that the Prince claims to be the champion of Saudi Arabia and wants to race Charles' horses. Charles uncovers a hidden plot to destroy his name in the racing world.Charles is asked by his old friend, Colonel Markland to help him locate a man that is planning a mass killing of Washington's elite, and destroy the man.Charles travels to New Hampshire to avenge the deaths of two of his railroad workers. The chase ends in a deadly shoot out.

Charles and Judith take Brett and Sun Bird to the horseraces in Louisville. Charles' filly, Artemis, turns impressive times and several people try to buy her and grow angry when Charles refuses to put a price on her. Some minor trouble erupts in Louisville when two men attempt to rob Charles' old friend, Vance Clausen, and Charles is accused of starting the problem and could face disbarment from horse racing by the racing committee.Charles takes Brett with him on a road trip, and they encounter a little trouble along the way. Brett is impressed with the ranches and businesses that Charles has created.Brett likens tent city to a military encampment. Brett proves himself worthy by the time they return to Philadelphia.Brett returns to the Fort and is still unsure of what he will do when he leaves and heads back to the fort. The pressure is on Brett to resign his commission or go with Custer and the 7th Cavalry to force the Indians onto a reservation."

Hunt and his men are sent on various missions and end up in a number of shootouts. This volume is filled with action, suspense, and surprising events. Harold Vance, from the Chicago Academy, is sent to Denver to replace Bob Rolling, a U.S. Deputy Marshal that was killed on a recent mission. U.S. Deputy Marshal Kelly Morrison is left to guard to prisoners and ends up in a barn during a deadly shootout when men show up to meet the two prisoners that Kelly is guarding. Judge Moore comes to Hunt and requests that Hunt and his men travel to Utah to confront and capture a gang of outlaws that murdered a long time friend and fellow judge, a court deputy, two attorneys, and a coach driver to release a condemned prisoner. The journey ends up with another wounded Deputy Marshal, and Hunt encounters another man that he tries to recruit into the Marshal Service.

Charles gets a letter from England and is informed that thousands of plant and tree starts are not needed and asks what he wants to do with them. Charles needs them for Atlanta, so he plans a trip to collect the plants, and begin work on a beer brewery, whiskey distillery, and a barrel factory in England. Charles returns to America and receives an alarming telegram. Construction workers are being killed. Charles knows he must go to Orlando to resolve the issue to prevent the construction company from walking off the job. Charles visits Atlanta and is upset with the slow progress and struggles to get the Construction Company up to speed and insists they hire more men or he will open his own Construction Company and hire hundreds of workers to get the work done in a timely fashion. Charles takes his two best horses to New Orleans for the fairgrounds race and is joined by Ghost who brought his two best horses. The race is tight, but in the end, it proves who has the best horse.

Description Hunt-U.S. Marshal Vol 39 Hunt returns from Washington D.C. with great news. The train ride out of Washington D.C. has a shock in store for Hunt. Hunt's youngest brother that Hunt hasn't seen for nearly sixteen years boards the train after spending the last three years in a Union Prison Camp. Being utterly destitute, Hunt takes his little brother under his wing and helps him get a fresh start in life. Hunt discovers that the young couple living on his ranch in Hudson have vacated months ago and never said a word to Hunt about leaving his ranch. Hunt and Beth travel to Indiana to buy more Polled Herefords and check on his pig farm at the Thayer Water Stop. Hunt becomes angered with the manager's snobbish wife and fires them to prevent the other employees from walking off the job. Hunt's men are sent on missions across Colorado to stop murders, cattle theft, and thieves. Hunt loses a Deputy Marshal on a mission and attempts to have Earl fulfill his promise to U.S. Deputy Marshal It doesn't take Hunt long to adjust to the normal life of U.S. Marshal.

Hunt returns to Chicago and awaits word of his future. Hunt, once again hears from the Secretary of the Interior and is not happy. Hunt is forced to once again travel to Washington to iron things out. Beth is having second thoughts about Denver, and Hunt becomes tormented with guilt about returning to Denver and wonders if he is making the right decision. Hunt gets a telegram from Ditch Combs in Albany and needs help with a gang of bandits that hit New York banks and cross Lake Ontario and escape to Canada. Hunt travels to Albany and makes plans to set a trap for the Ontario Lake Gang's next robbery, and it results in a shootout involving citizens, police, and the U.S. Marshals. Hunt decides to take Beth and the children to Denver for a week at the home in Hidden Valley. Beth doesn't want to take the children out of school so Hunt travels alone. Hunt needs to find a husband and wife team for one of the ranches in Denver, and a husband and wife team for the farms in Indiana. Hunt meets the neighbor in Indiana and buys his farms, adding more to the list of reasons to return to Denver. Hunt once again confronts Grant and insists on being transferred and President Grant calls on Hunt for one more impossible task. Hunt heads to New Orleans for a dangerous task that may be a oneway trip.

Charles travels to Denver and meets Colonel Markland and discovers that his assignment from President Grant will take him back to the land where he had at one time lived with the Sioux. A French-Canadian was running a trading post, and was trying to turn the Indians against the whites by supplying guns and liquor to the Indians. He was also cheating the Indians and blaming it on the soldiers at the fort. A Government inspector had gone to check out the trading post and was never heard of again. Charles meets his one-time war chief, Gray Horse, who tells Charles of some alarming details. Charles realizes that if he kills the French-Canadian, that he could create a war between the Sioux and the U.S. Army. Charles is forced to use his influence to resolve issues between the whites and the Indians.

Hunt returns to Chicago in time for graduation and greets his new recruits. Hunt visits New Orleans, Austin, and Kansas City as he looks for a strong Deputy Marshal to promote to Marshal. Hunt realizes after returning to Chicago and studying reports that the best recruit was in Denver. Promoting this most beloved man would vastly weaken the Denver team. Before Hunt can make a move, he receives devastating news and is called to Washington for a meeting that could bring his career to an end. Hunt confronts Jacob D. Cox in Ulysses Grant's office, and President Grant is forced to intervene to prevent Hunt from hurting the inept Secretary of the Interior. Hunt travels to Mississippi to check on his new office and joins the team on a raid of a gang of bandits that have been causing a lot of trouble in the south since the war had ended. Hunt insists on President Grant allowing him to return to Denver and the President persuades Hunt to join Charles Crawford on a dangerous mission deep in Indian territory before he would consider granting Hunt his request. Hunt's favorite horse, Gunner, becomes ill and Hunt is forced to break a three-year-old at his ranch that as of yet has not allowed a rider to stay on his back.

Hunt returns to Chicago in time for graduation and greets his new recruits and is forced to help teach the next class by filling in for Deputy Marshal John Rube while John is sick. Both the new recruits and Hunt are happy to see John Rube return to work. Hunt travels to Albany and travels with the men to Vermont where the deputies rode into a trap and lost a deputy marshal and another was wounded. The need for a new office becomes evident during Hunt's travels, and he needs to find the right man for the job. Hunt goes to Denver to make arrangements for the sale of the cattle and to make the 2nd installment to Charles Crawford. While in Denver, Hunt travels by train to Phoenix and visits with his old friend, Ben Collins. Hunt travels to Orlando to talk to U.S. Marshal Earl Jefferson and returns with a unique gift for the family.
