Dieses Buch ist eine Einführung in die Differentialgeometrie und ein passender Begleiter zum Differentialgeometrie-Modul (ein- und zweisemestrig). Zunächst geht es um die klassischen Aspekte wie die Geometrie von Kurven und Flächen, bevor dann höherdimensionale Flächen sowie abstrakte Mannigfaltigkeiten betrachtet werden. Die Nahtstelle ist dabei das zentrale Kapitel "Die innere Geometrie von Flächen". Dieses führt den Leser bis hin zu dem berühmten Satz von Gauß-Bonnet, der ein entscheidendes Bindeglied zwischen lokaler und globaler Geometrie darstellt. Die zweite Hälfte des Buches ist der Riemannschen Geometrie gewidmet. Den Abschluss bildet ein Kapitel über "Einstein-Räume", die eine große Bedeutung sowohl in der "Reinen Mathematik" als auch in der Allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie von A. Einstein haben. Zur Motivation und zum besseren historischen Verständnis sind kurze Texte klassischer Autoren (wie Sophus Lie selbst) mit eingeflochten. Außerdem gibt es zur Anschaulichkeit ein eigenes Kapitel, das ausschließlich von diversen geometrischen Transformationsgruppen handelt. Dabei wird konkret auf die klassischen Geometrien eingegangen. Als Vorkenntnisse werden nur die üblichen Studieninhalte des ersten Jahres im Mathematik- oder Physik-Studium vorausgesetzt, soweit sie die Analysis und die Lineare Algebra betreffen. Das Buch beginnt damit auf sehr elementarem Niveau. Alles andere wird nicht nur eingeführt, sondern alle Sätze werden auch bewiesen. Auf Verständlichkeit wird großen Wert gelegt. Daher eignet sich das Buch insbesondere als Begleittext zu Lehrveranstaltungen (auch Proseminaren) in den Bachelor-Studiengängen, aber auch im Lehramtsstudium und zum Selbststudium. This volume is an introduction and a monograph about tight polyhedra. The treatment of the 2-dimensional case is self- contained and fairly elementary. It would be suitable also for undergraduate seminars. Particular emphasis is given to the interplay of various special disciplines, such as geometry, elementary topology, combinatorics and convex polytopes in a way not found in other books. A typical result relates tight submanifolds to combinatorial properties of their convex hulls. The chapters on higher dimensions generalize the 2-dimensional case using concepts from combinatorics and topology, such as combinatorial Morse theory. A number of open problems is discussed.
