Due to the rapid development of the internet of things, mobile communication and social media, more multimedia content (images, texts, videos and audios) is being created from multimedia platforms. To discover the intrinsic structure in unlabeled multimedia big data, it is crucial to partition objects into different groups and downstream tasks for application such as misinformation, epidemiology, user recommendation, and so on. Clustering is a fundamental problem in multimedia information processing. This co-authored book explores clustering principles through advanced data analysis techniques such as matrix and tensor factorization which are highly relevant for multimedia information processing. Multimedia data may exhibit various forms of noise represented from multiple perspectives, making traditional clustering approaches less effective. The authors consider complex conditions such as noise sensitivity and discuss methods to address these challenges in the context of multimedia data. They examine popular regularization techniques, providing theoretical analyses that demonstrate the relationship between regularization and clustering performance. The book will serve as a solid advanced reference for researchers, scientists, engineers and advanced students who wish to implement practical tasks through clustering formulations. Additionally, the authors provide a detailed description of convergence theory to enable readers to conduct the corresponding algorithm analyses. They investigate novel regularization techniques, such as self-paced learning, optimal graph learning, and diversity regularization, to uncover the geometric structure of data. These techniques are beneficial for enhancing clustering performance. Furthermore, they demonstrate the efficiency of these regularization techniques through theoretical analyses, practical experiments and applications in real-world datasets.

This book provides a direct method based on system solutions to address the problems related to the analysis and control of delayed neural networks. The method proposed in this book is important for the following reasons: It does not involve the construct of any Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional (LKF), which overcomes the difficulty in constructing an appropriate and effective LKF; It can provide more simpler sufficient conditions, and hence it possesses less computational complexity; It can result in delay-dependent global exponential stability criteria that can used to give the decay rate estimation of the state; It is suitable for analysis and design problems of most system models with (multiple) delays after a small modification. The book is divided into 11 chapters, and focuses on the analysis and design problems related to delayed neural networks. It is written for graduate students and research level mathematicians and is suitable for postgraduates or as a reference.

Microwave power transmission technology, which is a sub-discipline of the wireless power transmission technology, aims to transmit electrical power without using wires/cables in the microwave frequency band. The retro-reflective beamforming technique has the potential to enable efficient and safe microwave power transmission, as it includes the following two technical elements. First, a directional microwave beam is generated as the carrier of wireless power. Second, the microwave power beam could be steered in real time toward mobile wireless power receiver(s). This book offers a comprehensive narrative of retro-reflective beamforming in the context of microwave power transmission. The book begins with an overview of wireless power transmission technology, microwave power transmission technology, and retro-reflective beamforming technique in its first chapter. Chapters 2 and 3 of the book provide in-depth descriptions of the theory and practical implementation of the retro-reflective beamforming technique for microwave power transmission. Commercial products of microwave power transmission are envisioned to emerge in three practical applications, including internet of things, space solar power, and wireless charging in fully-enclosed space. Chapters 4, 5, and 6 of the book discuss applying the retro-reflective beamforming technique to accomplish efficient microwave power transmission in these three practical applications, respectively. Abundant numerical and experimental examples are provided throughout the book. Retro-reflective Beamforming Technique for Microwave Power Transmission is a valuable resource for the wireless power transmission community. It will be of particular interest to engineers and researchers in the fields of electromagnetics, antennas, and microwave engineering.

This book is concerned with the fault estimation problem for network systems. Firstly, to improve the existing adaptive fault estimation observer, a novel so-called intermediate estimator is proposed to identify the actuator or sensor faults in dynamic control systems with high accuracy and convergence speed. On this basis, by exploiting the properties of network systems such as multi-agent systems and large-scale interconnected systems, this book introduces the concept of distributed intermediate estimator; faults in different nodes can be estimated simultaneously; meanwhile, satisfactory consensus performances can be obtained via compensation based protocols. Finally, the characteristics of the new fault estimation methodology are verified and discussed by a series of experimental results on networked multi-axis motion control systems. This book can be used as a reference book for researcher and designer in the field of fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control and can also be usedas a reference book for senior undergraduate and graduate students in colleges and universities.

This book discusses the controversial and conflicting hypotheses on the origin of angiosperms, which was generally assumed to be restricted to the Cretaceous and later ages. Since publishing the first edition of “The Dawn of Angiosperms” in 2010, several important advances have been made in this field of science, namely 1) the discovery of new fossil angiosperms from the Jurassic; 2) European researchers discovering angiosperm-like pollen from the Triassic; and most importantly 3) the discovery of a perfect flower from the Jurassic. All of these findings are at odds with the currently widely accepted evolutionary theories, and thus call upon us to critically reassess botanical theory. Accordingly, the new edition of this book not only includes more new fossil taxa, but also documents them in greater detail and corrects many commonly held misconceptions. In so doing, it makes related studies and teaching on the early history of angiosperms more realistic, concrete, andtangible, providing concrete fossil evidence as the basis for future research, and helping to distinguish the most accurate botanical hypotheses.

Applied Engineering Failure Analysis: Theory and Practice provides a point of reference for engineering failure analysis (EFA) cases, presenting a compilation of case studies covering a 35-year period, from the 1970s to 2012. This period spans the era from the time when slide rules were used routinely for engineering calculations, and when hard-copy photographs taken by film cameras were pasted onto typewritten sheets to make reports, to the present time when all these functions have become much less onerous through computer assistance. The cases are drawn from such diverse fields as mechanical engineering, metallurgy, mining, civil/structural engineering, electrical power systems, and radiation damage; the last two topics are quite scarce in current publications. It includes theoretical content that deals with useful topics in basic theory, material properties, failure mechanisms, EFA methodology, and applications. It provides high-quality illustrations throughout, which greatly helps to promote the understanding of the failure characteristics described. This book offers an integrated approach that serves as a useful first reference in the above topics, for undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as for practicing engineers. The book provides a hands-on approach to EFA, which helps the user to develop an understanding of potential failure situations, to explore the consequences, and to better understand how to solve similar problems; it also helps users to develop their own techniques for most other engineering failure problems. The authors include a section on technical report writing, which will assist failure investigators in getting their findings across. They also present simple engineering calculations that may serve as illustrative examples, and typical problems and solutions are included at the end of each chapter.

Scheduling and Congestion Control for Wireless Internet

This brief proposes that the keys to internet cross-layer optimization are the development of non-standard implicit primal-dual solvers for underlying optimization problems, and design of jointly optimal network protocols as decomposition of such solvers. Relying on this novel design-space oriented approach, the author develops joint TCP congestion control and wireless-link scheduling schemes for wireless applications over Internet with centralized and distributed (multi-hop) wireless links. Different from the existing solutions, the proposed schemes can be asynchronously implemented without message passing among network nodes; thus they are readily deployed with current infrastructure. Moreover, global convergence/stability of the proposed schemes to optimal equilibrium is established using the Lyapunov method in the network fluid model. Simulation results are provided to evaluate the proposed schemes in practical networks.
Higher Education as a Field of Study in China
Higher Education as a Field of Study in China: Defining Knowledge and Curriculum Structure concerns the complexity of higher education as an academic field—the evolving nature of the field in light of the overall development of higher education in China. It reviews how higher education as a field of study has evolved in China since 1978 and how the field has been shaped by political and social forces, as well as institutional culture. Xin Wang argues that higher education is becoming an interdisciplinary field rather than a subfield under the discipline of education, especially when higher education has become an enterprise with such a broad scope in China. Wang also expresses a belief that the field of higher education is being challenged by the professional need for preparing and training competent professionals for various administrative positions in China. Higher education as a field will be professionalized with its own knowledge base and a set of skills in applying this knowledge to practical areas. This book also provides an account of the U.S. model of higher education as an example—how the field was formed and developed, how it has evolved from a generalized area of inquiry into a professional specialization, how programs of higher education are structured, what classes they offer, and what challenges they face. The U.S. model presents a comparative perspective for Chinese scholars and program directors about higher education as a field of study.
