Computer Vision and AI in Structural Health Monitoring and Structural Engineering

Computer Vision and AI in Structural Health Monitoring and Structural Engineering

Cheng Liu; Yingchao Zhang; Xuebing Xu; Yan Chen

Elsevier - Health Sciences Division
2026
nidottu
In an era of aging infrastructure and an increasing demand for safety, structural health monitoring (SHM) has become critical for ensuring the longevity and reliability of buildings, bridges, and other essential structures. Computer Vision and AI in Structural Health Monitoring and Structural Engineering explores cutting-edge approaches to SHM, integrating advancements in computer vision, artificial intelligence (AI), and multimodal technologies to revolutionize how infrastructure is monitored, maintained, and managed. Starting with the fundamentals of SHM and structural engineering, the book examines the transformative power of computer vision applications, such as crack detection, corrosion assessment, and real-time deformation analysis. It also introduces vision-language models (VLMs), enabling automated defect reporting, multimodal analysis, and natural language interfaces for SHM systems.

Drawing on holistic research and professional practice, this book provides rich empirical, scientific, and clinical lenses to the discourse on wellbeing in higher education. The authors have appraised the underlying, conceptual, empirical, and applied nature of existing mind-body programmes often utilized to cultivate wellbeing (e.g., seated meditation, yoga, Taijiquan, Pilates, Feldenkrais, biofeedback, and the Alexander technique). Higher education is touted as a sector that develops new ideas for the wider community as well as ensuring students are provided with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes to positively contribute to the wider community. Within this setting, there are numerous benefits (e.g., attaining a reputable qualification), but there are also risks (e.g., stressors associated with expectations). To ensure the higher education setting is a place of wellbeing in addition to achievement, several strategies are promoted to assist staff and students whilst working and studying. Chapters offer clear implications for research and practice, and explore effective strategies for enhancing wellbeing for students and staff. The integrative mind-body programmes have considerable potential for developing wellbeing in the higher education settings. As such, this book will appeal to academics and researchers in the higher education sector, including scholar-practitioners, and teacher educators.

The automotive industry is transforming to a greater degree that has occurred since Henry Ford introduced mass production of the automobile with the Model T in 1913. Advances in computing, data processing, and artificial intelligence (deep learning in particular) are driving the development of new levels of automation that will impact all aspects of our lives including our vehicles. What are Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs)? What are the underlying technologies that need to mature and converge for them to be widely deployed? Fundamentals of Connected and Automated Vehicles is written to answer these questions, educating the reader with the information required to make informed predictions of how and when CAVs will impact their lives.Topics covered include: History of Connected and Automated Vehicles, Localization, Connectivity, Sensor and Actuator Hardware, Computer Vision, Sensor Fusion, Path Planning and Motion Control, Verification and Validation, and Outlook for future of CAVs.
Behavior and Evolutionary Dynamics in Crowd Networks

Behavior and Evolutionary Dynamics in Crowd Networks

Yan Chen; H. Vicky Zhao

SPRINGER VERLAG, SINGAPORE
2021
nidottu
This book offers a holistic framework to study behavior and evolutionary dynamics in large-scale, decentralized, and heterogeneous crowd networks. In the emerging crowd cyber-ecosystems, millions of deeply connected individuals, smart devices, government agencies, and enterprises actively interact with each other and influence each other’s decisions. It is crucial to understand such intelligent entities’ behaviors and to study their strategic interactions in order to provide important guidelines on the design of reliable networks capable of predicting and preventing detrimental events with negative impacts on our society and economy. This book reviews the fundamental methodologies to study user interactions and evolutionary dynamics in crowd networks and discusses recent advances in this emerging interdisciplinary research field. Using information diffusion over social networks as an example, it presents a thorough investigation of the impact of user behavioron the network evolution process and demonstrates how this can help improve network performance.Intended for graduate students and researchers from various disciplines, including but not limited to, data science, networking, signal processing, complex systems, and economics, the book encourages researchers in related research fields to explore the many untouched areas in this domain, and ultimately to design crowd networks with efficient, effective, and reliable services.

Unlike conventional structures, they allow large shape transformations to satisfy practical requirements and they can be used in:shelters, emergency structures and exhibition standsaircraft morphing wingssatellite solar panels and space antennasmorphing core materials for compositesmedical implants for minimum invasive surgery.Though traditionally the subject falls within structural engineering, motion structures are more closely related to other mechanisms, and they draw on the principles of kinematic and geometrical analysis in their design.
